id be curious if any of the senior members know what their total cost has been or their yearly average.

I've stopped counting a long time ago since the thought alone on how much $$ i've blown over the past decade or so depresses me. Sps are one thing, but the costs of airfare, gas, parking, meals, drinks, going out, restaurants, etc......pretty much outweighs the amount i've paid for sex over my life. But in the end, it's all relative.

On another note, i know quite a few people who've went through divorces and i'm still well-off as compared to them. Lawyers' costs, alimony, child support, etc. If someone could prove to me that my marriage would be 100% full-proof, i probably would have got married a long time ago & saved tons of money. However, considering how high the rate of divorces is, i figure i probably would have wound up getting divorced eventually & if so, would probably be peddling pencils & handouts along Ste-Catherine street today......which is what may have happened to me eventually if i hadn't discovered moderation in hobbying (or moved to Montreal years ago).

I agree.

What is the point in dating, at all, if the ultimate goal is marriage (which is extremely risky)?

Hum... dating is a social contract ! Ultimate goal is always where you want to put it
And when you agree about a... contract, obviously there is obligation... It's up to you to define what it is! lol

Interesting quote from wikipedia - dating :

Dating is a form of courtship consisting of social activities done by two people with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as a partner in an intimate relationship or as a spouse...The most common idea is two people trying out a relationship and exploring whether they're compatible by going out together in public as a couple, who may or may not yet be having sexual relations. This period of courtship is sometimes seen as a precursor to engagement or marriage.

Marriage is mostly religious so thecnically dating and marriage have nothing in common, some people can just enjoy the compagnie of somebody for a while with a certain tough that they won't do there entire life with them. For a matter of fact, even if i would be able to date girls and all, i would never expect it to last more than 2 years or so... With today's society its standard practice to change partners and all... you won't see many long time couples when the boomer era is done...
