Its the Dancer not the Song
Meant to post in this thread but didn't have the time until now.
Having worked in SCs during a good part of the 1970's and early 1980's as well as travelling I've seen / heard many songs and dancers. If the lady cannot dance or the song is not appropriate for her then regardless of the talent shown on the recording the performance will flop. Also a smart dancer will choose music that is appropriate for her and for the crowd.
The best stage shows usually feature dancers or strippers who dance to music that they have prepared themselves. Some of the girls actually rehearse and work at this.
Many years ago while visiting a friend in Alabama we visited an SC north of Birmingham. Crowded, good old boys type joint. About an hour into our visit the lights dimmed and the southern anthem "Dixie" introduced a blond in a stars and stripes cowgirl costume, cap pistols, lasso, the works. She did a great show and by the end of the song everyone was up singing along, cheering, whistling. She made a killing collecting 1's and 2's.
Another time a friend and I were near a college town outside of Boston, saw a sign for an SC and dropped in. A number of girls were working, nothing special. One rather plain looking one had a bubbly personality. The first few stage shows were rather poor. Joking with the bouncer I asked whose stage show was the best. He pointed to the plain girl. A few sets later she came on stage to a song from the Chorus Line "Dance 10, Looks 3". The perfect song for her as she certainly could dance. She could have filled a few garter belts with the 1's and 2's she collected.
