What I consider to be more worrisome and more dangerous then COVID-19 is the collapse of the economy that all this paranoia is causing. If this goes too long many retail and bars will go bankrupt. Where will we buy clothes or other things from? Eventually that will trickle down to MPs and even escort agencies. Businesses will go bankrupt. It might lead to another Great Depression. The media effectively created panic and paranoia with their dire reports. They make it look much worse then it really is. Do they report each time someone is infected with the flu or dies from it? I saw the way they showed caskets from Italy. What is also worrisome is the fact that the government is using this to install martial law. Who knows what new rules they will put and they will take away a lot of our liberty. Over a hundred years ago before antibiotics\vaccines we had tuberculosis, cholera, and smallpox. Guess what? The human race survived and the government did not have to shut down the world for that. What is the deal with people hoarding toilet paper? Are they preparing for a nuclear holocaust or what? Yes, we may stay virus free for a couple of months and then some guy from nowhere flies in with the virus and we start all over again. There are only two permanent solutions: herd immunity and the total immunization. The herd immunity means that at least 60% of populations gest the virus. Let’s pray for the vaccine as otherwise the price will be awful. Though if some effective antiviral drugs are developed the first is also a viable solution. Research labs in many countries are working on vaccine 24/7 and on antiviral drugs. My best hope is with Israelis. They have been developing vaccine against the bird flu for many years and are trying now to modify it to be effective against this one. This could be done faster than starting from the scratch. I believe they have already started tests on humans. Once again, the hope of humanity is only on science and this is true for most of the humanity problems. If we spend on science just 1/10 of what we are spending on entertainment and professional sports, we would not probably have this problem.

Reading about the UK situation, I saw that nobody knows if getting the virus once means you can't get it again. So 60% of the population getting infected could mean something very different than herd immunity.
The infected organism must develop the ability to fight the virus (immune response) as otherwise it is dead. The question how long natural immunity may last. Professionals argue that a few months is the shortest term. If this is true, the vaccine would not give us the long-term immunity either. The virus can also mutate and the vaccine can become ineffective as with many types of flu.

My answer on post 467 was was drastic measures at that time like seal the border, test all care givers and first responders, and quarantines most people especially the vulnerable. That has come to pass in most of Europe and the US and Canada over the past 3 o 4 days...………. but it should have been done 2 to 3 weeks ago.

During a momentary fit of madness I was all for the herd immunity thing. Two big problems 20% of the infected population would need hospital care and that would collapse our health care system. Don`t forget that its not just the over 65`s who are vulnerable and may die, but also 3 year olds with asthma ….20 year olds with COPD....30 year old pregnant women and those that have been scarred by pneumonia and cancer....many diabetics too.

I just broke my 4 day self isolation and went out for a 30 minute walk. Traffic was liter than usual and strip mall parking was half empty. Interestingly the SAQ had almost as many cars parked in front as the local drug store.
