First you do not need to have Google Chrome to see time and date. Just update your explorer to get the last version and voila. For all the other things lets all ask the mod's to fix it.

So mod's and techman can we get better smileys (emoticons) please. Also can you fix the chat room.

Thanks mod's

I'm sure the chat room will be back soon they are probably fixing the glitch about having to log into it.

Wish I could help ya but the most I can do is try and find ways to solve the problems that we all have adjusting to the new board. I'd love to be able to get new smileys on merb but all I can do is mention it like everyone else is doing and hope that someone is reading our posts and may take pity on us and give us some perks. I wish the image code was available in more sections of the board so that we could just set up a smiley page on a picture sharing site and just link to them in our posts.

Chrome is much faster too.

Any up to date browser will show the time and date stamp on the posts. I don't use Chrome because I think Google collects enough data as it is and I prefer to use IE8 in private browsing mode for sensitive sites that I don't want saved to my hard drive. I hve both Chrome and Firefox on my system for testing purposes but I've found that IE8 does everything I need without the plugins that FF needs to get the same results. But lioke most things, opinions vary and everyone has their favourite browser.

Weren't there alot of problems with IE8 Tech? I never upgraded my IE browser because I thought I recalled you mentioning that it needed some major bugs fixed. Is it good to go now?

Thanks,

SK

I've been a big Firefox fan for the past couple of years (and hated IE), but for the past month, i've been using IE8 & haven't gone back to Firefox. I like it!

Tech: i'm thinking of giving Chrome a try (to see if it's really as fast as some people claim it to be). What's your take on Chrome?

Tks.

No major bugs with IE8 that I am aware of. It's the most secure browser available today if you are running it on Vista or Win 7 in protected mode which is not available on XP. The only problems at the beginning were related to compatibility with some web sites but they keep improving the compatiblity mode list and the majority of sites run great on IE8.

I find Chrome to be too basic for my taste and I have problems with Google's privacy policies where they can collect data on everything you do and use it as they wish. IE8 does everything I need and more, without having to add tons of addons and plugins to get that functionality. It also has a great privacy mode where all temp files and history are erased when you end your browsing session.

I've heard that the latest version of Chrome is a great improvement but I have no plans to try it in the near future. Maybe I'll throw it on a test system somewhere down the line just to see what it's like.

And no matter what browser you use, try to limit your installed toolbars to a minimum. I have had numerous customers' problems that have been solved by simply uninstalling the Google toolbar, or one of the many others that tend to install themselves if you don't remove the checkmark when installing things like Adobe Reader or Flash. If I want something, I'll install it myself and I hate these companies where I have to make the choice not to install something that I don't want in the first place. Apple pisses me off with that when it tries to install iTunes or their useless Safari browser along with a Quicktime update.

Gave Chrome a try at work and home for a bit... Went back to Firefox, I was just more comfortable with it. No huge problems with Chrome, just personal preference I guess.

As far as the new board. I like it, haven't had any function issues yet.

Solving the problems with the search function

A number of members have brought up various problems with the search function, one major one being the inability to sort the results by post instead of by thread. It seems that this function has not vanished from the board, it has just moved. Here are the directions to find it again, compliments of Fred Zed. I believe this will solve the problems we all seemed to have with the new general search function. This new search function is more advanced than the original as it includes the ability to search the thread you are currently viewing.

Searching MERB

1- To search for posts by a specific user click on the user name then select : View Forum Posts

2- To search for posts in a specific forum

Open forum ( such as Lounge) then look to your right for: Search Forum
Specify if you want to restrict search to TITLES only, or POSTS

Note: Within a specific forum, you can also perform an ADVANCED SEARCH

3: ADVANCED SEARCH -
Click on : Advanced Search - enter keyword or user name then refine your search
eg : ( specify time frame, sort order )

I give up on this. I still can' figure out how to show "Daphne" to come up in post results. I tried using option #2 and option #3. I tried opening the "outcalls" thread and clicking "advanced search" and it defaulted to showing "Daphne" in my keyword box. The search function is f'n awful now!

Hello Fred...Mods,

Just when you start to like this new board it screws you. Just tried to log in four times. All four times the indicator showed I was not logged in. So I just figured I would move forward and read a few posts. As soon as I went to the next page without trying to log in again the indicator showed I was logged in. Now can we all say cuckoo...cuckoo...cuckoo three times fast.

I think SK already found a solution for that and he posted it here. I made the change and logging on works fine now.

The search works fine for me in IE8. It took me awhile to figure it out when trying to sort things by post. It seemed that all the links just led to the first post in the thread. But a little further investigation led me to discover that you had to click on the show last post icon next to the user name in the right hand column and it will take you to the right post. I ran your Daphne search and this is what it gave me... https://merb.cc/vbulletin/search.php?searchid=24000 If you look at the last post column you`ll see that the last poster name changes in each result listing. Just click on the last post icon to see the correct post.

Takes a bit of practice but I find it works pretty well. And a couple of threads that never seemed to be indexed before do seem to show up in the search results now.

One thing I noticed when trying to look at the different problems people are having to see if I could help is that there`s a few threads that deal with problems or complaints about the new version including one poll thread. This makes it really confusing to try and help out here with all these different threads to have to look at. So can a mod do something about it and maybe merge all the posts into one thread or something? At least the problems? And this thread doesn`t seem to be the right place to post problems either. So if someone could do a cleanup in aisle 3 it would really help out I think.

A couple of days ago, I wrote my handle and password to log in, but without checking on the "remember me" square. It didn't remember me (it must be karma finally hitting me back :) ), until I finally succumbed and put an 'x' in that damned box so I could keep surfing where I'd left off the previous day. Something to be more careful of for those of us who use public computers, or that have family members sharing our computers...

Hello Shijak,

When I logged in for the first several times on the new board I always checked the "remember me" box until my name and password start to appear as soon as I type in the first letter of my names which shows me I am in the memory and everything is working. But I have still had trouble frequently when trying to log in even though my name and password come right up as soon as I start to type. So, something is messed up that wasn't on the old board.

Hmmm,

Hey Merlot,

I forgot to mention, I'd intentionally chose not to check the 'remember me' box after identifying myself (handle and password)- yes the system did recognize me at that point. But when I clicked on 'new posts' it went straight to the new'posts' page, minus my name up top, and with the 'you must register to...' riggamarole guests get subjected to...
So to be able to access my PM box, and get back to where I was at in the previous time's reading, I had to click on the "remember me" box...

(Am I really making such a big deal about such a little thing?! Geez I really need to get laid then...:) )
