I agree Fred, for the most part I am a fan of the new board, my only gripe was with the search function, otherwise I like the change.

Search function definitely seems harder to use (and I don't recall finding the old version hard to use when I discovered MERB) but don't forget that the new emoticons SUCK... chipmunk balls? Any chance of changing them?

After playing around with the search function I've found it to be better than the old one. The trick is not to use the search up at the top right corner and use the one in the grey bar just above the section you're in. It's directly above the last post column. And forget about the basic search because that never gave good results in the old version either, just click on advanced search and you'll find all the options you need. Takes a bit of practice but it seems to work well once you get used to it.

Can someone explain to me why, whenever I click the New Posts button, there is a fictional thread called "Searching MERB" allegedly started by Fred Zed, but when I click on that supposed thread, I get this message:

"Invalid Announcement specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator"

It's a complete goofball. I can click on all other new threads/new posts, but this is the very first one on top, and it doesn't even exist!

Too many glitches! I don't really have the time to play Techman, even if I had the knowledge!

Hello EB,

There seems to be a problem with that announcement when Fred posted it. It is not related to the changes in the board software. This is the correct link to it:

https://merb.cc/vbulletin//announcement.php?f=5

Clicking on the above link will also remove the post from the new posts page.

Ok thanks, clicking on that link seems to have gotten rid of that glitch.

Hello Techman,

On other boards I click on the name of a member and one of the options is..."find all posts by" (Merlot for instance). I click on that option and voila...I get only posts ( without entire threads ) by that member in order from most recent backwards. It's extremely easy. I have not been able to do that here. I am using Mozilla Firefox 3.5.6, and there are no favorites options. I don't like IE8 because I get pop-ups. What to do?

Cheers,

Merlot

Hello Merlot,

When I click on your name in one of your posts, one of the options that appears is "View Forum Posts". When I click on that item it shows me your entire post history. This is the link to that result page.

https://merb.cc/vbulletin/search.php?searchid=27214

If I use the advanced search function, I also have the option to do a search for only the posts you have made in this particular thread. this is a new feature that was not available on the old software.

EDIT: I neglected to mention that I also use Firefox as my browser.

Allo Merlot,

I am using the same version of Firefox.
Left click on the members name, then left click on "View Forum Posts"
Viola, the list is there in reverse chronological order as you describe.

Have fun,

Unfortunately I am unable to do a proper copy and paste for this example but this is the first listing in the search results for your handle. If you notice at the end of the quote there is a link. this link shows up as the last post icon next to your name in the right hand column of the results page. When you click on that icon it will bring you to your post in that thread. This is the new method of showing search results and I agree that it is not entirely obvious. But it does work.

Hey Merlot! That drove me nuts too. You have no idea how many searches I did and everytime I clicked on the link it brought me to the first page in the thread. I really thought the search was broken. Then I tried to do a search in a long thread, the Cleo's thread, for a popular dancer's name. I was really confused when all the results seemed to be the same and just led me to the first page of the thread. Then I noticed that the last poster name was different for each result. So I took a shot and clicked on the last post icon and voila! it brought me to the right post.

So yeah, the search does work but it takes a bit of time to get used to it.

Hello M8,

This is exactly what I have been doing right along. I tried my name and several others. It doesn`t matter. I get entire threads containing the posts, not the posts or post history alone. This is just not working for me.

Precisely. Thanks for the help. But this doesn`t work in my case. I can`t see why it doesn`t. But that`s it.

Okay, I just used the little, teeny weeny double arrow icon next to my name on the right side where it says "last post" and I was directed to my last post within the whole thread. Is this what I am supposed to get. Well, it is pretty limited compared to getting a full list of very post in descending order. If the "last post system" is how this function is supposed to work I have to say it`s definitely a long way from the old system. If what anyone is looking for is within a very long thread, and the person is not sure which thread...then one will need lots of time.

BTW...just to mention...if the banner behind the "Notifications" option for instance is the same color as the option buttons, or the banner is flashing various bright colors...please send me lots of Ibuprophen to deal with that placement choice. It`s very hard, and sometimes painful, too often.

Cheers,

Merlot

That's because that was the post you clicked on. If you look at the next post in your results you'll notice that it'll bring you to the next to last post you made. And so on...

Just look at the date and time of the last post listed in each of the results. They are all different even for posts in the same thread. The time stamp matches the post.

I agree, the older versions are much better in this respect. We used to have the latest posts of some given user with a the first few sentences of each post displayed. That gives a a fairly good idea about what some member have been posting about.

The new version does not show post excerpts anymore, so we need to follow every single link in the results page to see what the post is about.

The URL that gave these posts is: https://merb.cc/vbulletin/search.php?do=process&showposts=1&searchuser=<userHandle>

Edit: I have just noticed that hovering on the threads link gives an excerpt of the members`post in a tooltip.

Okay, I did get that. It`s workable.

I absolutely agree! Having the posts all listed without needing extra steps, and having the first sentence visible in each post made identifying what you were looking for very, very easy.

Bonne nuit,

Merlot

Yeah, the post summary was really useful. I wonder if there is any way that can be put back into the search results. And I agree with Merlot that the banner placement at the top of the page is annoying. There must be some way to relocate the user bar from the top of the page.

Latest upgrade today and now a new problem!

Board went down this afternoon for a short time, maybe 20 minutes. When it came back up I had to log in again, I then went to "New Posts" and it brought up the new posts, I then went to the "go to first new post" button in the thread and it takes me to the first post of the thread, not to where I last left off!!! We're progressing backwards here.

From what I understand, K, Joe.T was put in charge of the upgrade. They've sent out for a team on Nobel prize winners to undo his work. The job should be complete by the end of the month.

I also had the same problem......and strange pop ups, so I ran Avast and Super Anti-Spyware and Anti-Malware and found a ton of viruses, spyware and malware on my computer. More than I have ever had. It was slowing down my computer substantially and also causing my CPU to make a loud whirring sound, but now I got rid of this crap and I am back to normal. I have no idea where this stuff comes from.
