Doc,
As I mentioned previously I think the Captaincy, at least with the Yankees, is a largely ceremonial position that is designed to honor the player rather than create a leadership role for the player. In Jeter’s case I think he may have been a leader more by example. It is like the Queen of England. She has no political power or leadership role but performs ceremonial tasks for England.
I heard an interesting story about Don Mattingly and Derek Jeter, both former Yankees captains, who work together now as Manager and CEO/Director of Baseball Operations of the Miami Marlins. In spring training 1995, when Mattingly was in his last season as a Captain and Jeter was a minor league player invited to camp, they were playing catch in the outfield at the Yankees spring training complex. When they finished the catch, Mattingly said to Jeter, “let’s run full speed back to the dugout.” When Jeter asked why, Mattingly said, “you never know who might be watching.” That statement was made for Jeter’s benefit and Jeter never forgot it.
The Yankees captaincy was vacant from 1995 after Mattingly retired until 2003 when Jeter was named Captain. Jeter remained Captain until he retired in 2014 and has been vacant ever since.
