Habs Nation!

I bumped into this guy a couple of years ago, that stomach tumor is huge! But yeah he's unfortunately not using the money for any medical procedure. He had told me he was in the hospital in Campbellton, New Brunswick and was running away from there cause they were going to kill him and wanted money to get an operation in Montreal. I didn't tell him I was from New Brunswick but I know that hospital well. It's one of 2 Psychiatric Hospitals in the province, they serve the northern part of the province. So I would not be surprised if he was there, in the psych ward. It's both tragic and sad to see people in this state. I suspected he wasn't going to use the money I gave him that night. I'm not sure exactly how much I gave him, maybe a buck or two in loose change. I was pretty drunk at the time but remembered that tumor clearly.

I am involved in a community garden. Often gardens are abandoned, and surplus produce , I personally deliver to local food banks and soup kitchens.. It's nice to see sad faces smile on a full stomach.

Medical care is free in this country. Medication is free for people on welfare. It sounds like he does need medical care but refuses treatment because he has psychological issues and prefers to pan handle on the streets and give a scam hard luck story to get drugs or booze.
I give when the need looks genuine, I have seen old guys digging through fast food trash for scraps. I once saw an old guy at McDonald's digging through the trash. I went inside and while standing in line I felt bad and bought 2 lunches so that I could give him one. I told him to go inside to eat it as it was late fall and I do not think he was too welcome there unless he had food in front of him.
There was another time when I saw a young guy in his early 20s with no coat and a blanket wrapped around him at a shopping center parking lot. He come to my car and told me he had no job and needed food. I felt it was a scam, I wrote and address and told him to show up there and I would give a job, he screamed that he had not eaten. I told him that we had a small work kitchen there and that I would feed him. He turned and walked away without saying if he would show up or not. The guy was still pan handling there an hour later when I finished my lunch. They seem to like to hit people up at lunch time, to make them feel guilty that you ate but they did not.

I hear ridiculous scams from people asking for money on a regular basis, and I will still occasionally give them money knowing this.

Hi AmberRose, I think you are very kind-hearted. I agree with you people who end up pan handling on the street are usually unfortunate. However I would not give any money if they are trying to scam, because I don't want to encourage it, at least in my old country, they are professional scammers and are organized, and they manipulate abducted children. I know situation in Canada is different.
Anyway, like you said, it is just a personal choice, not a big deal.

There was a recent project in Montreal that counted the homeless. The estimate was 30,000 plus homeless, but when all was counted it was about 10% of that number. The conclusion of the project is that there is 10 times more cost and resources put into the homeless than what is necessary. It is cheaper to give them all apartments than to set up hostels and soup kitchens all over the city. When you give money to the homeless you are subsidizing their booze and drug habits. They stay outdoors when the weather is nice and only take advantage of shelters when the weather is bad.
