Hello my fellow Canadians,

I heard that temperature in Montreal dip to -35, with windchill factors in.

How does everyone cope with this brutal cold ?

Do you stay inside most of the time ? How can you survive outside ?

I sure hope this cold spell does not last until next week, to give everybody a break.

Cold????

No, this is again american misinformation from the Bush administration!
It's pretty hot here and the trees are in full blossom....

Seriously, -35 (with the chilling factor) is not that bad. Dress properly, and you will survive.
The positive fact about extreme cold is the following one: when you come from outside and you put your Junior in a twat, it feels so warmmmmmmmm...:D

You never get used to it

I am from here, born and raised and I can tell you that you never ever get used to it. Those who say that they like the cold are simply in denial. There is absolutely nothing worse than having to walk any distance in cold weather no matter how bundled up you are. All summer long, all I fantasize about is the summer months when you can take a stroll anywhere and admire the pretty girls everywhere. That's harder to do when the same girls are so bundled up that all you can see is there eyes. I read in an article last week that some 800,000 Quebeckers flock to sunny destinations like the DR, Cuba, Mexico, etc.
I for one, am still waiting for global warming to kick in so that I can remove a layer or 2:(

Buy an heated coat ?

Hello my fellow Canadians,

Any of you want to buy from me a battery-powered heated coat for the brutal cold in Montreal ?

It will sure keep you and your other half warm in this weather.

.....do:
1)Get a technical polyester or polypro undershirt (Sports store,pm me for list) - better with a wool blend.
...............
Not to do:
....................
3)Work yourself into a sweat- for real.
Those are conflicting requirements - polyester gets me sweaty, even with a wool blend.

My best way to beat the cold is to apply the principle of the Litany against Fear but against cold.

Instead of shivering in the cold like an epileptic:

I must not shiver. Shivering is the cold-killer. Shivering is the little-cold that brings total obliteration. I will not shiver. I will permit cold to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the cold has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Cold ??

It's not that cold. I'm a backpacker and i've been sleeping outside for the last 3 week-end in the adirondaks. If dress properly you wont have any problem. In winter you can always add a layer and you'll be fine but in summer it's just too hot and you can do shit about it.

Real Montrealers cope with the "cold" by not being freakin wimps. Guess what - this has been one of the mildest (maybe the mildest?) winters on record. A few slightly cool days and the wimps and Debra Arbecs of the world start crying. Geez - move to Arizona if you can't take it.

I think alot of people in the US head south in the winter. Either to southern states like Florida, California, Arizona and such. Down to the Caribbean, or Mexico, or someplace tropical.

Me, I'm different.

When I want to warm up in the winter ... I head to Montreal!!! :D

I've said it before & I'll say it again : "Vive les Quebecoise!"

Dealing with extreme cold is actually easier than dealing with extreme heat. When it's cold you dress appropriately, but when it's too hot there's no escaping it and you have to retreat to the indoors.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I will take -40 celsius instead of +40 celsius anyday...

Also -- Joel Cairo is 100% right, other than the last few days this entire winter has been a complete joke. It was nice to get a snowstorm and some 20-below weather. Makes it feel more normal.

Work out and take a nice long steam before you go walking outside. You'll feel great. Otherwise, pick up your pace and walk as fast as you can. You'll warm up quickly. My favorite gear is a high-quality neckwarmer. If your neck and head stay warm, that alone preserves 80% of your body heat...

.. now get out there and write your name in the snow before it all melts...

You have to find a thin undergarment or T-Shirt .You can shop ....
Roland,

Are you putting us all on ? You claim that you are a backpacker (I have never been able to understand someone camping in this weather...or any weather for that matter), but under your name it says "hibernating".

Do you know whether you are coming or going ? :p
