i have lived in Montreal most of my life, and have travelled to many other cities in North America. I am financially capable to live in most places (obvioulsy not places like Manhattan), but I would not live anywhere else (Toronto would be my second choice).

I live in the heart of the city and take my bike everywhere, I dont have to fight traffic. I have access to beautiful affordable sps anytime I want. Hard to beat that.
Wow, that's really good to know. Montreal really looked nice when I looked at some of the places online. Thanks very much for the reply. But isn't GTA really bad right now? I don't want to step foot in GTA lol.

I want to live in a VERY liberal non-american city. There are some great places in europe too (but expensive lets forget that for now)... Plus I am a city boy, I don't like the suburbs. I dont want to have to take my car to take a shit...I like walking or biking.

Therefore there is only Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, I could probably enjoy all 3. But Montreal has the lowest cost of living of the 3 and is the prettiest imho. Yes GTA and Vancouver are too expensive but Montreal is slowly catching up.

a side not with the insane greedy rent increases
just because they can nobody to check them
many people who are renters and descent people they don't advertise
or they would be swarmed
so find a neighbourhood you like and do a lot of walking
and by word of mouth you can find good deals everywhere.

Anglos have also been leaving in droves back to their home provinces since the pandemic, and now because the language laws are getting worse and worse.

Not really, recently there was more people leaving Ontario for Quebec than the other way around.

Why? Housing costs, mostly.

I would be cautious to buy into the language laws hysteria because it's just that : hysteria.

I am very affected by the language laws as an anglophone in Quebec. So I'm speaking from experience. Also I said home provinces, lots of people have family taking them in.

I'd be curious to hear how you're actually affected at all beyond the realm of perception.

And I'm not sure I understand what you mean in your 2nd sentence. Maybe you can't read French but the article pointed out that more people actually left Ontario for Quebec so no, Anglos are not "leaving in droves" right now. That's a gross exaggeration.

I'm not really into discussing how I'm affected to someone talking to me with that tone, you seem pretty dedicated to debate my actual lived experience, not into it. Take care.

if you don't like to be challenged on your experiences; don't mention them.

I really doubt the Office de la langue française is harrassing you to make sure you talk French to your clients.

Hey everyone,

I was thinking to move to Montreal permanently. I live in the East Coast and used to come to Montreal for work and also used that opportunity to see SPs. Now that the work is ending, I was thinking of moving elsewhere and looking for a nice, calm, quiet place with decent cost of living. I know it is bad everywhere and prices are skyrocketing lol. Would not have expected this a couple of years back, but I do need some decent place to live lol. I do speak French fairly well. What are your thoughts? I'd really appreciate any help.
If you have retired or are close to retirement the access to medical care should be of primary concern. If you move to Canada, you may lose Part B of your Medicare. You will still have Part A, but this only covers hospitals in the US I believe. If you have an emergency and are admitted to a Canadian hospital you would pay the full price unless your private insurance in the US covers international care. However, if you are Canadian by birth or manage to obtain the residence permit (i.e., officially emigrate to Canada), then you will have access to medical care in Canada on par with other population.

Legault changed the game with that, he passed a bill whereby making it much easier for landlords to decline lease transfers. Most likely it will not work. Agreed for the strict language laws.
He hasn't changed anything. It's a bill proposal, nothing's been done yet. Hold your horses lol it's not going through. No way it's going to happen.

His housing minister is a realtor and investor with lots of conflict of interests.

Quebec's ethics commissioner launches probe into housing minister

Quebec housing minister lobbied by real-estate business partner

Quebec housing minister met with another former business partner at lobbying event

Reported real estate flipping has opposition blasting Quebec housing minister

Watch the pushback... It's already started. People are pissed.

You obviously failed Economics 101. It is the most basic law, the law of supply and demand and no it is not a free market when the federal government is giving away money to refugees and OAS to the retired parents of recent immigrants, money to have kids. Trudeau in 2022 brought in 1.5 million people. it takes time to construct new houses and apartments. This is the biggest unnatural population increase since the 1950s. When demand is increased the prices go up. It does not take a genius to figure this one out. There is a housing crisis in all the big cities of Canada. This is a Federal caused problem so yes all thanks to Trudeau. With 8 years of Trudeau rents have doubled, mortgages have doubled. I suggest you read on up how economics work before lecturing me.

Whixh government started pulling government out of social housing? Hint: it was a Conservative government. Specifically Mulroney. It's not like the housing situation is a sudden phenomenon. It's a long time coming and blaming Trudeau as the sole culprit is just convenient for you. But the reality is far far more complex than that.

I am against social housing because it benefits a select few. Single people also need affordable housing, not just families with 4+ children or refugees. Social housing means taking money away from single people to redistribute it to the preferred group that the government thinks deserves the subsidized housing. This means ultimately more taxes. You cannot tax a nation into prosperity. That is like being in a bucket and trying to lift yourself in the bucket, it cannot work. This would not even be necessary if the government stopped with its mass immigration policy.

Funny you mention Mulroney, he is the second worst prime minister after Trudeau. He is a big time globalist. He was the one that started the immigration investor program. In a nutshell this allowed rich people (mainly from Hong Kong) to buy immigration papers by lending $400,000 to the government which is in 1986 currency values and have a net worth of $800,000 in 1986 values. The program was terminated in 2014. Guess why Vancouver has the most highest rents and most expensive housing market? Thanks to Mulroney. The government purposely brought rich people to make money and those rich people used real estate as an investment portfolio.

Here is the link to the program -> https://www.exeo.ca/blog/invest/canada-immigrant-investor-program-what-happened/

Mulroney also was the one that privatized our only pharmaceutical producing company and it got sold to some company in France. So when covid happened Canada was not able to produce its own vaccines.

Here is the link -> https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2019/11/08/Canada-Public-Lab-Life-Saving-Drugs/

Mulroney also started the GST and he started the North American Free Trade agreement which enabled the outsourcing of work. Before most things were made in Canada, USA, Japan then after Mulroney things were being made in China. Although the cost of production went down significantly and the quality went down, prices went up.

And lastly Mulroney is worse then Trudeau for this, he said Canada should bring in 1 million immigrants per year. He is mad. Multiple people would be sharing studio apartments just to make ends meet. Rents would be so high and so will the cost of houses. Reality is only 8% of immigrants settle out of the big cities. The population is needed in the northern sparsely populated regions, not in the big cities like Toronto or Montreal. Mulroney is a madman. I do not talk about him because he is long gone, not because it is convenient. Currently Trudeau is in power. So you see whether it be a Liberal or a Conservative, they are all the same.

How about a shoutout for the women of Montreal? The working women here and the women you see on the street every day, in summer anyway. From all over the world. My private time with a québécoise ~25 years older than most of the women here is the most intense & sensual I have ever experienced. So good I wondered if she was a professional in another life. An attractive mature woman that knows her body & how to use it is SAF (Sexy As F…) and the weekend doesn’t cost $6000. They’re intelligent & make their own money.
I could post pictures of a dozen local woman that would do more than turn your head on the street. I’m not saying it’s easy.

You can complain that rents have gone up buy they are 1/3 of NYC or Boston. As for the politics here, the CAQ seems whacked and shortsighted. The French thing makes it interesting. It sucks for business but I’m trying to learn it. Fix the damn roads. They’re worse than the Bronx. I don’t know enough to understand the intense Trudeau hatred but Trump is looking for votes should you want to move south. Hoping Canada doesn’t go full on Autocracy like the GOP is pushing. I got used to Democracy and like it.

For many many years, I have thought about moving to Montreal.

And it came down to 2 things blocking for me. Job & speaking French.

Requirements of speaking french: Having hung out with SPs and having other hobbies in Montreal, I have made friends. However, it is still very difficult for me to hang out with them and really "belong" to Montreal because everyone defaults to French in their everyday conversations. They always have to switch to English for me, so I would never be a true Montrealer unless I got fluent in French. I'm sure if I ever moved, I would get fluent, but it would take a lot of time. Since you already speak fluent French, I don't see that being a problem.

Now for problem number two, job: Very few high paying jobs in Montreal, and they simply pay so much less than everywhere else. When looking into moving here, I have spoken to colleagues and contacts. If I were to transfer to Montreal with the same job, I would have to take a 50% salary cut, and I'm told my bonus cut would be well into the 6 figures, so that is a hard NO. Even with the adjusted cost of living factored in, it is a huge loss. If you make about the same in Montreal vs where you are from, and adjusted for cost of living is similar, then this is not a problem either.

If neither of those are a problem, I would move to Montreal in a heartbeat.
