Maple Leafs sign Clarke MacArthur at a bargain

TORONTO -- Forward Clarke MacArthur signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The team announced the deal with the unrestricted free agent Saturday.

MacArthur had 16 goals and 19 assists last season between the Buffalo Sabres and Atlanta Thrashers, who acquired him on March 3 in exchange for draft picks.

He scored a career-best 17 goals in the 2008-09 season while playing in 71 games for the Sabres.

The 6-foot, 191-pound forward has played in 208 NHL games with Atlanta and Buffalo, collecting 44 goals, 44 assists and 129 penalty minutes.

(Do the Habs have a GM? What's he been doing all summer long? Any word if Carey Price will be re-signed by the Habs? I heard yesterday he might be traded to the Sharks....)

Mini B !!!!!!!! and Oui, he has took most of the summer off. How funny would it be if Price is traded, first they trade their reason for even making the playoffs last season, (let alone their playoff hero), Halak, for a bag of pucks, and now talk of price being shipped out of town, lol.... unreal. And with that defense giving up 40-50 shots a game, they better hope an old Patrick Roy will come out of retirement, hahahahhahah...."ole ole ole ole, OLE, OLE!!!!

PS. GREAT signing by Burke, a steal for a gritty fast Kid who put up 35 points and only averaged 10 mins a game, could he be part of a package for a bigger deal or is he staying? time will tell.

Either way it's a win win for me.
With or without Price, the Habs will suck this year and I will make tons of $$$$ on my bet.
Even if Price goes, I still make a lot of $$$$

But where I might even make a lot more cuze the odds are getting even bigger is that the Leafs still suck this year despite their good work.

And if I'm wrong ? Then it means that the HABS will have a superb season and I'll be able to cheer for the team (against the stupid organization that traded Halak).

Bwouahahaha !!!!

Ole Ole Ole Ole !!!!!

Why? I'm a Detroit fan and GHG is a Habs fan, so why would we go to see a St. Louis Blue?

Although, admittedly, I'd much rather see even a St. Louis Blue than a whimpering Maple Leaf.

Actually lg, it's Doc who is the most thrilled, as he indicated by posting this info about Halak in TWO threads. The other one, where he admits to being a big fan, is in French so you'll have to get someone to read it for you - maybe you can ask the same person who reads the English threads for you.

I think you should save your gift for Doc, lg. He has long been a HUGE Halak fan as the next post will illustrate.

The performances of the great Jaroslav Halak proved me wrong. The habs were a decent team because of Halak's heroics. They would have been awful without them (as they proved they were when Halak wasn't starting). What can i say? Halak played great & his performances caught everyone by surprise.

As promised lg: a quote from July 18.

I've never denied having respect for Jaro Halak. This soft-spoken, classy individual had no business playing for the habs, who clearly have always disrespected him & never appreciated his talents.

I truly wish he wins the Vezina in this coming season. Toronto would have been the ideal place for him to be fully appreciated for what he is, both as an athlete & as an individual.

So Cairo, who do you think will be the starting goalie for the habs this season?

I agree with everything you wrote except for the part about Toronto - Halak, like all other actual NHL-calibre goalies is far too good for the Leafs. Besides, he doesn't have that famous goon mentality that Burkie loves above all else. Burke would rather sign another ten Colton Orrs than one REAL hockey player (and no real hockey player would want to go there unless he's worn out his welcome everywhere else, such as Calgary or Boston).

As for Montreal's starting goalie I'm saying Price, not that I really care one way or another since the Habs are not my team.

Meanwhile another all-time Detroit great (I know, I know: it gets boring saying that because Detroit has so MANY all-tme greats!) retired today. Chelly spent 10 seasons with Detroit, along with 9 in Chitown and 6 in Montreal. His only outing for a non-Original Six Team (or should that be the Original Five and a Quarter - with the QUARTER being Toronto? And they are barely worth even THAT!) was last year. Of course he'll go into management with the Wings, since Mike is that rare owner who actually views his players as people and not just as Sittlers or McDonalds to be shipped off and forgotten once they're no longer of use to him.

What with the great Steve Yzerman running the show in T-Bay this should be an interesting season coming up.

And good news for Leaf fans: an article yesterday stated that the Leafs are expected to improve this year. No, of course they won't come close to making the playoffs, but they might move up as much as three positions in the standings, so a sincere congratulations to all the Leaf-lovers out there! I'm sure they'll BOTH be very happy.

Price Is Not Right: Sharks pass on Carey Price & will sign Antti Niemi

CHICAGO -- Former Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi has decided to accept a one-year, $2 million deal with the San Jose Sharks, according to a league source. Rumoured at the possibility of trading for Montreal Canadiens' Carey Price, the Sharks likely deemed the asking price to be too high and instead set their sights on signing the former Stanley Cup finalist.

After helping lead the Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup title in 49 years, Niemi and Chicago went to salary arbitration. The Blackhawks submitted an offer of $1.5 million, but the arbitrator awarded Niemi $2.75 million.

That was too much for the salary cap-strained Blackhawks, who cut ties with Niemi and signed former Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco.

The Sharks have been one of Chicago's postseason rivals in recent years. Niemi had a strong series in the Western Conference finals in helping the Blackhawks sweep the Sharks.

In a perfect world, Price would end up in Colorado and win a few more cups for the Avs, ala Patrick Roy. This cant be making the Molson's very happy, seeing their franchise looking like a mickey mouse operation with the way "their guys" handled the situation. Has "Gainey" and "Mini B" lost their minds? i mean first they trade away the city's hero in Halak, and they didnt even have the sense to sign Price to a contract before doing so, it would be poetic justice at it's finest should Price leave and the habs opening night starter be Alex Auld with Sanford as backup. maybe they could bring up Cedrick Desjardins.....ummm well, maybe not lol

Price's dream place to play would be in Nashville or Calgary. He's a cowboy who absolutely is in love with country music!

I'm not surprised at PG's innactivity this summer considering he feels no personal link to the city of Mtl and Quebecers in general. Heck, he even lives in a different country! His home is in Vermont! What kind of GM is that?
