Wade Belak's death

His suicide is one of the saddest & strangest ones to recent memory. A beautiful wife (a former actress on 'Saved by the Bell'), two young children, a promising career in broadcasting.....he even went out with friends until 2am on the day he hung himself. Who would go out with friends & appear to be having a good time when all along, he's been thinking of ending it all & will go ahead and do it in a few hours? Hard to understand. However, details into his mental state are slowly starting to come out. Wade Belak had been secretly suffering from depression for some time, but was unwilling to share his health issues with the public & people around him. Here's a picture that was taken of him at 2am on that day, just as he was leaving the hotel bar & getting ready to head back to his room:

Predictions

2011-12 NHL Preview: Northeast Division
Authored by Nick Obergan - 30th August, 2011 - 6:30 pm

Montreal Canadiens

Additions: Erik Cole, Peter Budaj
Losses: Roman Hamrlik, Jeff Halpern, Alex Auld

Last season the Canadiens didn't look like a playoff team on paper, but they managed to squeak in as a seventh seed. This season, the playoffs look less likely than a year ago. The only reason they made the playoffs was Carey Price, and how he stood on his head all season long. Erik Cole is a decent addition, but could very well struggle with the weighty expectations that his contract and playing in Montreal bring. Will Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges be healthy and effective all year? The losses of Hamrlik and Halpern, two very solid two-way players, will hurt on the ice and in the locker room. Will Scott Gomez show up? Will Mike Cammalleri stay healthy? With the improvements made by other Eastern Conference clubs, Montreal looks over-matched with their lack of depth.

Last season: 2nd in the division, 6th in the East. Prediction: 4th in the division, 11th in the East.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Additions: Tim Connolly, Cody Franson, John-Michael Liles, Matthew Lombardi
Losses: Brett Lebda, Jean-Sebastian Giguere, Tim Brent

Is this the year? Could the Leafs' post-lockout playoff drought over? On paper, it should be. GM Brian Burke had a very productive offseason, signing Tim Connolly to a short-term deal, plucking away the offensive Liles for a draft pick, and pillaging Nashville for the solid young defenseman Franson and Lombardi. If Connolly and Lombardi are healthy all year, all of a sudden Toronto is deep down the middle; they don't have a bona fide #1 center, but Connolly, Mikhail Grabovski, Lombardi and Tyler Bozak are all solid contributors. Phil Kessel is a lock for 30 goals, but could net 40 with the addition of Connolly and a full season with Joffrey Lupul. A balanced attack in front of the deepest blueline in the league should help James Reimer, last year's rookie sensation, succeed as the franchise's #1 goalie. But if Optimus Reim takes a big step backwards, and Jonas Gustavsson doesn't improve, Burke could be scrambling for a goalie mid-season.

Last season: 4th in the division, 11th in the East. Predicition: 3rd in the division, 8th in the East.

I agree with Nick Obergan's assessment of both teams. During this off-season, i've been hearing habs fans say that their team has improved over last year's. Say what? How? By signing journeyman Eric Cole to that big contract? Poor Eric. He'll realize there's a big difference playing in Mtl as compared to a non-hockey market like Carolina's. Will the boos affect him when he'll be unable to score 30 goals? Will they be able to replace the veterans that they lost? Will Carey Price once again play like Jacques Plante?

Totally agree, although i have always liked Cole, he is now the enemy and hopefully the carl crawford of the Canadiens. (big fat contract, aging veteran, will not live up to the hype and the contract and probably wont even finish that contract) and Octavian, the only reason the habs even made the playoffs last year was Price standing on his head for approx. 15 of the canadiens wins. Not likely he can do that 2 seasons in a row, but also it may take Price stealing 20 wins this season as there are more question marks on the canadiens this year than last, and the East has gotten better. Good luck tho it should be a battle til the final game!

Milan Lucic involved in altercation with girlfriend

Stanley Cup hero Milan Lucic was questioned by police early yesterday after he and his girlfriend got into an altercation in the North End.

According to a police report of the incident, the Bruins left winger was “highly intoxicated and hostile” after he and his galpal argued outside a Starbucks on Commercial Street shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Witnesses told police the 6-foot-4, 220-pound hockey player was yelling at his girlfriend, who was on the ground, and at one point threw her shoes and purse at her. However, the woman told police she was not physically assaulted and “was adamant about not being harmed,” the report states. Police “did not observe any visible injuries,” the report says, and Lucic was not charged.

Bruins spokesman Matt Chmura confirmed that the team was “aware of an incident that took place in the North End early Tuesday morning involving Milan Lucic.”

“We are addressing the matter internally,” Chmura said. “At this time we have no further comment.”

(Will his new nickname around the league be Starbucks?)

He's a shadow of the man he once was, due to years of alcohol & drug abuse. He now looks like someone in the final stage of cancer! However, he's currently clean & sober, living in Mtl with his wife....and i wish him all the best.

Here's another clip of him talking about Chara:

p.s. His favorite restaurant in Mtl is 'Queue de Cheval'.

Bruins sign Brad Marchand to 2-year pact

BOSTON - The Boston Bruins signed forward Brad Marchand to a two-year contract extension on Wednesday.

Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed. According to TSN of Canada, Marchand's deal is worth $5 million.

The 23-year-old finished his first full NHL season with 21 goals and 41 points in 77 regular-season games.

He was a primary factor in the club's first Stanley Cup win since 1972, tallying 11 goals -- including two in the Bruins' 4-0 title-clinching Game 7 victory in Vancouver -- and 19 points over 25 playoff tilts.

In 97 games over the last two years with Boston, the Nova Scotia native has compiled 42 points and 71 penalty minutes.

Jets sign Zach Bogosian to 2-year pact

PENTICTON, B.C. - The Winnipeg Jets have locked up their final restricted free agent.

With training camp just around the corner, the Jets signed defenceman Zach Bogosian to a two-year deal for $5 million, according to capgeek.com.

“We got it done today and it was a good feeling to get it over with,” Bogosian said in a telephone interview. “It was a long summer, but I’m really happy that I got it done.

“Obviously, a contract is a big thing and to get it out of the way relieves a lot of thoughts that are in your head and you just try to look forward to getting camp underway and to get the season going here.”

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was optimistic a deal was going to get done and the fact that two sides reached a deal on a multi-year deal at a manageable cap number is a positive for both parties.

At the end of the contract, Bogosian will still be a restricted free agent for two more years but will also hold arbitration rights — something he didn't have during this negotiation.

Bogosian, 21, is coming off a season that saw his production dip slightly to five goals and 17 points in 71 games with the Thrashers after putting up a career-best 10 goals, 13 assists and 23 points in 81 games in 2009-10, his second in the NHL.

The third overall pick of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2008 has enormous potential and Cheveldayoff made it clear early on that Bogosian was the type of player the Jets were planning to build their defence around.

Bogosian has 24 goals, 35 assists, 59 points and 137 penalty minutes in 199 NHL games.

Marcel Aubut: "NHL in Quebec City soon"

QUEBEC CITY -- Marcel Aubut, who sold the Quebec Nordiques 16 years ago, says he thinks NHL hockey will return to the provincial capital within two years.

Six U.S. NHL franchises are in trouble and ripe for relocation, Aubut told QMI Agency.

Aubut sold the money-losing Nordiques to American interests in 1995 and the team moved to Colorado that same year to become the Avalanche.

Aubut says he wants to make things right with Quebec's jilted hockey fans.

"It interests me because I participated in the departure and return," said Aubut, referring to his recent lobbying efforts.

"It's really coming full circle."

Aubut says his hometown could have had a team sooner had a new arena been ready by this year, but the $400-million facility won't be completed until 2015.

That means an NHL team that relocates in 2013 would have to play its first two seasons in the Pepsi Colisee, a 61-year-old facility that's not up to NHL standards.

"If we had (built) earlier, we would have had a team today, not Winnipeg," he said of the Atlanta Thrashers' move to Manitoba in May.

"I know that (NHL commissioner Gary) Bettman would have chosen Quebec City way before Winnipeg. I remember when the Nordiques left, he said 'we just lost a big asset, with the cultural aspect that Quebec represents.' This was an American talking!"

Media and telecom giant Quebecor Inc. will pay $33 million for naming and management rights to the NHL-ready arena in Quebec City -- an amount that would nearly double should Quebec City land an NHL franchise.

Quebecor president and CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau also has made it clear he would be interested in owning any future NHL franchise in the city.

Quebecor Inc. owns QMI Agency and Sun Media newspapers.

Aubut says the relocation clock is ticking. The U.S. economy will eventually recover and Aubut says the owners of struggling franchises will be less likely to sell their holdings once the downturn ends.

B's sign pest Marchand for 2 years at $5M!!!

From this article... I found this pretty funny. "The $5 mil total also proves that, if you want to make some serious money in the league, you should try speedbagging a Sedin."
