The D has bright spots (Markov, Komisarek and an underated Bouillon) but lacks physicality (aside from O'Byrne and Komisarek). Briesbrois had a surprisingly good season but Gorges is the key to the core. He has to develop and be a top 3 defenceman, now that Streit is gone.

Did Hamrlik die or get traded when I wasn't looking? :)

With Markov/Komisarek/Hamrlik you already have a top 3, and a good 4th in Bouillon. O'Byrne and Gorges will do fine at 5 and 6 with occasional help from Dandeneault and Brisebois who will mostly play on the PP. It would be a mistake for the Habs to trade young talent for another defenceman.

a fluke and very lucky win for the Toronto Maple Craps - Detroit was obviously suffering from a bit of a Stanley Cup hang over  - How did the Toronto Maple Shits do against the Red, White & Blue ?? ( I think it's time to start a regular season thread :D )

BTW mark my words, Ryder will come back and haunt the Habs next year just like John Leclaire did after being traded to Philly. :(

As a result, the Leafs will still be shitty enough to finish out of the playoffs but just good enough to finish 24th overall and blow any chance of getting the number one pick in the draft lottery. :D

At the risk of looking like a douche bag for quoting myself, told you so.

As for off season predictions regarding the Hab's unrestricted free agents, I say they re-sign Tanguay, Komisarek (who will sign for much less than he could have last year), Brisebois , Bouillon, and Kostopoulos. They will let Lang and Schneider go and will make lowball offers to Koivu and Kovalev. I wouldn't be surprised to see Koivu decline and end up playing with his little brother in Minnesota and to see Kovalev accept a deal around 3M/season.

I pretty much agree. Except they should keep Lang instead of Koivu who has nothing left in the tank. Komisarek is worth about 3-3.5, certainly not 4+.
Plus it was rather evident that Komisarek was beeing groomed to be the next captain. But with Carbo gone, and maybe Gainey as well, who knows.

Sedins want $63M contracts

VANCOUVER - A two-for-one deal it is not.

The Los Angeles correspondent of Swedish newspaper Expressen reported Thursday that Daniel and Henrik Sedin both want 12-year, $63 million contracts to stay with the Vancouver Canucks. They'll be unrestricted free agents on July 1.

The Ornskoldsvik, Sweden-born twins had 82 points each in their eighth Canucks' season and were paid $3.575 million each for 2008-2009.

Detroit Red Wing and fellow Swede Henrik Zetterberg signed a 12-year, $72 million deal earlier this year.

The Sedins will turn 29 on Sept. 26. If they were to sign for a dozen years, the deal would be complete in 2021 when they are 41-years-old.

Expressen also reported that Mats Sundin won $10,000 at a Las Vegas poker tournament and donated his winnings to Toronto's Sick Children's Hospital. Sundin was non-commital when asked if he would like to return to Vancouver after pocketing more than $5 million for an unremarkable half-season.

Congratulations to Claude Julien for being named the NHL's top coach (with the Boston Bruins) at the NHL Awards last night. It was touching to both him & fans to see him receive his trophy from former Habs/Leafs/Boston/NJ coach Pat Burns, who is once again battling cancer.

Completely true Doctor. Gee, maybe Bob Gainey isn't a genius!

I remember attending the draft back in 93 when it took place in QC and Alexandre Daigle went first overall. The ambiance was great with the crowd going nuts for both him and especially Jocelyn Thibault when the Dicks took him as their first pick. All in all a fun experience so if I was in Montreal I'd try to make it.

As for Lecavalier, whether Toronto, Montreal, or anyone else pick him up before July 1, I don't see how you can win when one player is taking 20% of the salary cap. For every 10 million dollar player, you need about four $600K players and in today's NHL a 600K player isn't even a dominant AHL player.

say.

Burke and the Maple Losers will be draft day busts! :D

I see Bob making some deals and getting some good picks in advance of another season where the Habs make the playoffs. As for the Maple Laffs, 2009/2010 will mark the fifth straight season this sad sack franchise will be on the outside looking in!

Go Bob Go!
Go Habs Go!

At least, the Leafs have a future ...

Of course they do. I hear they are already planning the 2067 celebrations of 100 years without winning the Stanley Cup! :p

Dream on! Oh yes, Burke ( the most over -rated G.M. in the NHL) has a grand scheme for Toronto – acquire a couple of Ottawa cast off’s, Redden and Schaefer (both has –beens, see Globe and Mail article), good luck with that. :D
