Burke
For months leading up to the draft, there was plenty of bluster from Burke, but it turned out to be nothing more than hot air from this wind bag. Burke, as he set out to, failed to trade up for a top 3 pick and he couldn’t pull off a deal for the fourth or fifth selection to take Brayden Schenn. He thought he had a deal with Atlanta, but Waddell hung up on him!
Burke has you gullible; sap Laff fans reeled in – hook, line and sinker. Burke had to rely on Brian Murray to put the pieces in place for him in Anaheim and he left the Ducks in a mess. And twice during his time with Vancouver, Burke was a complete bust on draft day. Burke's made 18 picks over two drafts in 2000 and 2002 and came up with exactly zero players who proved to be legitimate prospects. Those 18 players went on to combine for a mere 31 NHL games over their careers. Burke's biggest deal so far = Brad May!
Here’s what Laff fans are saying:
I remember the Scotty Bowman process and the whole idea of "cleaning house" in order to remake the team for it to be something he wanted to see. I really thought we'd see that from Burke. Bold moves and so forth. Instead we get draft picks nobody's excited about and a GM who seems to be able to articulate himself very loudly and clearly to anyone holding a microphone but not so much to other GM's.
Laugh if you like but based on what Burke said his goals were - move up to get Tavares or at least move up and to completely recast this team, this night was a failure on Burke's own terms and I would see it that way too.
I'm not laughing but I am standing by my opinion. This night was a bust as far as what was promised and in terms of what could have reasonably have been hoped for.
The JFJ-Fletcher-Burke shakedown has shown very little in terms of tangible difference, outside of an increase in bombastic quotations that do nothing to improve the Maple Leafs' stock on the ice.
Very poor day at the draft table, but not a bad one on the microphone. Thanks Brian.
Another Burke comment is of some interest. When asked tonight if he projects Kadri as a top six forward, Burke was unusually (for BB) vague and finally said "We'll see". I don't doubt that assessment in the least but it does underline my disappointment with how well we did in the first round.
I guess I am just not that easily satisfied after the public statements, after 4 wasted years, after 42 odd years of failure (just making the playoffs is not a laudable goal) such that I can take any solace whatsoever in the view that it wasn't as bad as when JFJ was running things. Defining success using the lowest common denominator as a measurement is self delusional.
I expected more and if some here find that laughable, I guess what they are really saying is that after 42 years what would I expect more. Maybe they're right... but if they are, get the shoulder patches ready for the 50th anniversary.
Brian Blowhard needs to shut his mouth and let his actions do his talking instead.
He's the one who set up the false expectations and delivered zilch.
Let's try surprising us with his brilliance or GM acumen rather than telling us all about his brilliance.
