Come on!

Guys,

What is the matter with you? If you have the attitude that you can't change anything then you never will, and you will let yourself be walked all over in every business transaction you ever have. Believe me, if Priceline gets deluged with enough complaints about this hotel which was never a legit 3 star to begin with before Crown dropped them, they will listen. Always stand up for your rights and do not let these companies foist unacceptable trade practices on you!

Maxima,

Funny you should mention that. I booked the Holiday Inn Select through Priceline in April and when I checked out they hit me with something they called a municipal hotel tax. They are the only Montreal hotel of many I have booked through Priceline which attempted to tax me. You are correct that you already pay tax through Priceline. When I complained at the Holiday Inn that they were the only hotel to try to tax me in the city, they reiterated that it was a municipal hotel tax that they had to collect. Since it was only about $3.00 and I was in a rush I didn't argue further, but I want someone to clarify what right these Montreal hotels have to tax me on a Priceline booking. I suspect they have no right at all and next time they try it I will get the manager before I pay such a tax.

Maxima,

I am going to report it to Priceline, even though it was a few bucks, and Dee you should do the same because they have no right to collect that tax. It's pure BS and no other Montreal hotel has ever done that to me on a Priceline booking.

Same here EB. I got taxed there as well. Let us know if you get something out of it :)

BTW, I bid up to $60 and $65 for a 3* for this Friday and Saturday... No bites!

This is not quite true. The Holiday Inn Express, formerly Hotel Les Suites Fauborg, also levies a municipal tax. It is usually around $2.50 per night. I have been hit with it many times by this hotel for such a tax, so I doubt the Holiday Inn Select is the only hotel in Mtl that levies this tax.

donnyB,

But was this done on a Priceline booking? I have never been charged this tax by any of the other Montreal hotels I booked through Priceline. Only the Holiday Inn Select. The Hyatt never in my 8-10 times staying there, all on Priceline, never charged this tax, nor did any other hotel I booked through Priceline.

May be the better way of saying is : In Montreal, hotels of the H.I chain charge the municipal taxes.
The more reason to report it to Priceline.
If you book via Priceline, the only charges that you should pay to the hotel are "incidental charges" (e.g parking, bar, phone calls, room services, etc..).
Municipal taxes are not "incidental".

Actually, Hotel Suites le Fauborg charged me this tax even before it was bought out by Holiday In Express.

I've stayed here many times when it was Le Faubourg and now that it's the HI Express but haven't been hit with that tax. HI Select I have though but just wasn't in the mood to bitch about it at the time.

Bad News!

Bad news for those hoping to get some cheap deals on Priceline for the Canada Day/4th of July Weekend which also will mark the start of the Montreal Jazz Festival which runs from Thursday June 30-Sunday July 10.

I bid on the 3 stars up to $65 on Priceline and then the 4 stars up to $95 with no takers on any of those bids. Ended up paying much, much more for 4.5 and 4 star hotels which I got on Hotwire, mainly out of frustration. I was not prepared to stay at an unaffiliated dump like "The Plaza" for $70/night. No way!!!!

I would suggest that you book your hotels now as it looks like it's going to be a big weekend in Montreal July 1-4 between Canada Day, 4th of July, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, not to mention the big party.

Hilton B

The Hilton Bonaventure has been had on Priceline for $90 from 7/1 through 7/5.

Personally, I would rather stay at the Sheraton for $105 and keep my sanity and wits about me while not having to navigate the maze.

How disheartening is this? We used to see this place going for $35/night 2.5 years ago.

Marriott Chateau Champlain

The MCC was recently gotten on priceline as a 3* for $91USD which is very surprising since it was a 4* previously and must have been downgraded. Not sure I'd go as high as $91 for a 3* and risk getting the Plaza myself. This is the first time I've seen the MCC accept a bid.

montreal one star hotels

Awhile back i asked if anyone used the one star selection when trying out priceline's bidding process...was informed the Quality on crescent could be had and that the hotel was the only one taking bid's.

Well, just went on priceline and saw a new option to pick your hotel at a certain rate...checked it out and found out that the Hotel Quartier Latin Montreal (looks like a B&B) is being offered in this new catagory. Not sure if they are taking bids but this hotel wouldnt be suitable for a hobby visit.

Found a review of the hotel and will quote just a small part of it..

the hotel was pretty quiet in general (they have sheets sticked on the walls saying that you're not supposed to make noise or bring visitors after 10 PM).
