Ok... I wanted to buy a new pc since a long time ago... mine is over 10 years...but today I can't remember who sold me this pc...if my memories are good, I bought it at futurshop (lol yeah! Like I am not screwed enough already :help: )



So...can I make it work until I get a new one? Or at least to go get my pictures/videos and stuffs before throwing it off the balcony?? And where can I get the best deal for a pc tower? (New or used with garantee...I don't really like used things but I guess it can't wait so I better be open at anything lol)

Hey Alyssa,

If you know the brand/model of your PC it could be solvable. If you got it from Futureshop I assume it was some brand like compaq/hp/dell/etc. The short story is if you can get into the BIOS when booting your laptop, you could possibly save it. I think just the brand model would be enough to determine how to access your BIOS. It's usually one of the F-keys so you could just faceroll your F-keys when you boot up before you see the Windows load screen. If it worked, you'll see some 80's interface pop up.

Regarding your data, don't throw your PC off the balcony yet. Your can always extract data from your PC if the Hard Drive is intact. No need to turn it on, it's already hard .

As for a new PC tower (I'll assume you're referring to desktop), you have 2 options:

Go the illiterate way: go to Microsoft store and get a hassle free desktop at a premium cost. (I did that)
Do It Yourself way: go to NCIX and build the computer of your dream. They also sell pre-built computers. (My evil twin did that)

If you were referring to just the case NCIX will work fine.

I've ordered laptops, desktops and monitors on both sites and ever had any issues. Just don't order from Newegg or Best Buy. They seem more interested in selling warranties than the actual product.

Alyssa youre funny hahaha. Older computers are fucking résistant ! I remember my mom's computer when I was about 7... I dropped a bunch of grape juice on it... Kicked it many times... my rabbit even chew the cables yet the computer was totally fine.

I'm not sure what's the issue with your PC at this point (I've never seen such error). Accessing your BIOS is really the first step to tell your PC can be fixed or not according to your screenshot. Sometimes booting in safe mode might just do it (F8 on your keyboard during boot).

If you're using any version of Windows XP or newer, hitting F2 on your keyboard is usually the key you need to press right after you turn on your computer. Once inside the BIOS, some of the models might have an update inside and all you need to do is update the BIOS. I haven't updated a BIOS in over 10 years so maybe things have changed. Don't worry you can't really screw up anything inside the BIOS since it always asks you to confirm any major action. Just don't confirm you want to reset to default/manufacturer settings and you'll be fine

Unless the chip is fried, odds are your BIOS could just be out of date. I'd love to call and hear your beautiful voice but

1. I don't have your number
2. I only know the basics when it comes to hardware (BIOS is a hardware issue) so I don't think I could be of much help beyond doing what the screen is asking you to do...

I've never tried the geek squad but maybe they can provide the support you're looking for.

Worst case scenario, your computer is dead. So you have someone convert your internal hard drive to an external hard drive which allows you to connect it to another computer using a USB cable.

Based on the error message, seems more like you had a RAM issues or with a hibernation error when you computer last went to sleep.

If you can give more specs here or in PM, I'm fairly sure it can be fixed with minimal effort. I don't think its a permanent issue.. and for gods sake don't bring your computers to Bestbuy's tech dept lol

Which version of Windows are you running? Is it Windows 7? This sounds like your master boot record is corrupted. Updating your bios will probably not fix this problem. You will need a Windows 7 DVD to fix this.

1)Insert your Windows 7 DVD and choose your language and location.
2)Then proceed to next screen and choose repair computer.
3)Setup will search and give you two options. Choose "Use recovery tools that can help that can help fix problems starting Windows".
4)Then click next and cancel any prompts that attempts to fix the boot automatically.
5)Then you will get a screen with five options. Choose the last one "Command Prompt".
6)Once in command prompt type "Bootrec.exe" then hit enter
7)Then you will have options:

A) C:\bootrec/fixMbr
B) C:\bootrec/FixBoot
C) C:\bootrec/RebuildBcd

Run them all then

enter C:\Exit

Bet you 10 to 1, your hard drive is toast... (There may be a chance to go and get the data.)
You will probably have to replace the hard drive, after ten years, it is the number one suspect.

Use an external dvd player. Change the boot sequence-boot from dvd. Inexpensive route to investigate other than give up right away.

Allyssa 10 years for a laptop is non sense! Almost a miracle it last that long. And it must have been slow as hell!

Using google app for all work related stuff combined with a home attach storage for my pic/videos and an online backup system (I use backblaze) I can change laptop every 2 year (sometimes every year). It takes 1h to turn around and be ready on the new one.

Acpi compliance issue usually has to do with a corrupt hyber.sys file.

Cause
This problem may occur if you add random access memory (RAM) to the computer while it is in hibernation. When the computer resumes from hibernation and loads the Hiberfil.sys file, Microsoft Windows detects the change in memory state, and then you receive the error message.
Resolution
To resolve this problem, restart your computer.

If the problem persists, start the computer by using the Windows CD or by using an emergency startup disk, and then delete the Hiberfil.sys file. To do this, follow these steps:
Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer from the CD-ROM.

As for getting a new computer, go to a Microsoft store and buy a surface computer, as of now far superior in quality to any other system, however expensive.

So...here are some news: A good friend of mine has 2 mother boards...one is 4 years old...still good though...the other is brand new, but the video card crashed within a month after he bought it...can I just pay a geek to get them both merged? Or just used some pieces of one of them in order to fix the other mother board?

(I told you I am a complete reatrded when it comes to pc )

Are you referring to the video card integrated with the motherboard or are you referring to an external video card plugged to the motherboard?

If it's the former, you can try plugging in an external graphics card so it wouldn't use the one from the motherboard. Even the cheapest graphics card would perform better than your integrated card.

As a side note, what are your needs when it comes to a computers?

Does it have to be a desktop or are laptops ok for you?

And what do you mostly use it for? Admin tasks, video editing, online gaming, etc?

Looking back at this thread is bringing me childhood nightmares. If I can get a feel of the specs you need I'll check if I have a laptop that matches your needs. Fair warning, it won't be Apple.

I'm a definitely not a pc girl...so, knowing that I'll be back as a supporting member next week, my pc would be mainly to "socialize" (fb, merb, ads, twitter, etc)...few youtube, maybe some games for my kids and that sums it all...

As for my personal preferences, I am not selective those days when it comes to pc..lol....buuutttt considering I'll go back to school within next yeux, a laptop might be more convenient in the long run...but not necessary for now..

Have you considered Google Chromebooks?

Short of hardcore gaming, they pretty fit what you mentioned. They're probably the best performance/price you can get but the downside is their largest hard drives comes only with 32 GB. It's not much but you can extend it using either a USB key or via their storage plan which is less than 30$/year for 100GB I believe. From what you wrote, I assume you won't be doing too much photo editing or video editing which require more storage/performance so anything with 4GB of Ram and less than 100 GB of storage should be enough. Also since most of your usage relies on online apps, you just need something that works well online so basically any laptop with the latest wireless protocol which Chromebooks carry.

Since they use cloud storage, if your computer breaks you can easily replace it with a new one without any loss of data as long as it's backed up on the Google servers. It'd sync with the new computer right away.

And if you were worried about viruses/malware, don't. Chromebooks do not get infected for the simple reason that you can't install 3rd party software on the computer. There are extensions but they are native to Google and still need your approval to get installed so you can easily remove them from the extensions settings. So you can surf all the porn you want WORRY-FREE!

You mentioned going back to school. In general Chromebooks work well for education but if your applying for old-school programs that rely on Windows it won't work. It's also a sign you need to abort that program lol. I know if you enroll in the HEC, you have to buy their overpriced Windows laptop because they like to mold you in an outdated frame.
