Actually, Hughes and Lester. Lester, unlike Hughes and Chamberlain, both of whom fared quite well against minor leaguers yesterday and the day before, stuffed a Met lineup chock full of some of the most feared hitter in the National League yesterday.

Yankees Sign Billy Crystal

It's not a joke, the Yankees have signed Billy Crystal to a one game contract and he will play against the Pirates Thursday, one day before his 60th birthday:

Crystal last played baseball in high school when he captained and batted .348 for his Long Beach High scool team in New York City.

I am sure that Rumples will be eagerly observing the at bats to see what kind of bat speed is shown by the soon to be 60 Crystal. A hit of any kind would be a major shock. Actually, Crystal making contact and hitting a fair ball in play, and not striking out in all his at bats, would be considered a success.

It is with some embarassment that I admit that I was not aware of the odds when I made an even money bet with Joe.T. that the Red Sox would finish ahead of the Yankees in the upcoming season.

Apparently, on some betting sites, Boston is -1.50 and the Yankees +1.30.

Had I known, I would have asked to beat more.

The Devil Rays and Baltimore are +6000 and +9000 respectively. Does anyone know if any dogs that big ever won a division title?

Of the couple who ran it, the woman firmly stated that they were not guilty of being associated with prostitution as no sex was involved. The male half of the couple said that he was "looking forward to being punished."

Who am I to deny you, Joe T., especially after you have behaved so well in begging for it? However, I just checked that our original bet was not who finishes in first place. It was

While not likely, it is possible that neither team finishes in first place.

I therefore propose the following:
Within a week of it becoming mathematically impossible for the losing team to finish ahead of the winning team, the person who selected the losing team pays the winner $320.

Obviously, if you accept, the previous bet of $160 is cancelled.

Rays' Gomes, Yanks' Phillips, Duncan among five ejected.....

ST. PETERSBURG -- One day after Yankees manager Joe Girardi insisted his club would not retaliate for a violent home-plate collision in Saturday's game against the Rays, both clubs spilled onto the field at Progress Energy Park in a bench-clearing incident Wednesday.
After Yankees starter Heath Phillips was ejected in the first inning for grazing Rays third baseman Evan Longoria with an up-and-in fastball, the Yankees' Shelley Duncan cleared the benches by sliding hard into Rays second baseman Aki Iwamura in the bottom of the second.

Play halted for several minutes as the two clubs engaged in shoving, and at least one punch appeared to be thrown. Duncan, who was running out a ball hit down the left-field line that tipped Longoria's glove, was out at second base by least 30 feet and raised his spikes on the slide, hoping to knock the ball loose.

"In my mind, there's only two things you can do -- a weird slide or slide hard into his glove," Duncan said. "I made a hard slide into his glove."

With a small gash opened over Iwamura's right knee and last week's events still present in many minds, the Rays saw it differently, especially right fielder Jonny Gomes, who charged in from right field and hit Duncan from behind.

"I just think [Duncan] tried to inflict some pain on Aki," Gomes said. "[The reaction] just comes second nature. I was taught all the way from T-ball to have a teammate's back.

"It's a baseball field. There's fans and kids watching. I had to let [Duncan] know that's not going to fly."

Gomes, Duncan, Yankees third-base coach Bobby Meacham and Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long were ejected following the incident.

Well, the Yankees certainly had an eventful trip to St. Petersburg today. It all started a few hours before game time, when the team announced that Andy Pettitte would be skipping his scheduled start today due to some tightness on the outside of his pitching elbow which was also described as muscle irritation and by Pettitte as a bit of tendonitis.

When you look at all the young talent in the Rays organization, maybe third place is a bit of a stretch for the geriatric Yankees.

Thanks buddy, just to let you know that last week a baseball writer whose name escapes me has Hughes who has been absolutly on fire penciled in for 15 wins and he's just a rookie, add that to the fact that Wang who has won 19 games the past 2 years and is the ace of the staff should be good for about the same and then there is super phenom Chamberlain who will be setting these guys up before he ends up as a starter at some point.
