Hey Joe.teenie,

Is that homers or hummers. ;)

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9541606/Red-Sox-clearly-better-than-Yanks

NEW YORK - Having squeezed five games into 13 days, the Red Sox and Yankees will now take this brief respite, thank you. For the time being, the Yankees have seen enough.

"It couldn't be any worse," said Derek Jeter after Boston bashed New York, 7-3, Tuesday night. "They've beaten us five straight times."

"At this point in the season," said teammate Johnny Damon, "They're the better team."

By the time they next meet — three days starting June 9 at Fenway — plenty will have changed. Alex Rodriguez will (presumably) be back in the lineup, if not back in everyone's good graces. Injuries to other players will have healed, while new maladies sprout up.

And while it's an admittedly small sample size and these teams perennially focus on October and not May, there are some things we can already glean from the five games.

To wit:

New York's bullpen is a liability.

Through 26 games, almost one-sixth of the season, the Yanks sport a bloated 6.35 ERA. Tuesday night, it took six relievers to get the final 10 outs in relief of Joba Chamberlain, and that included five walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Damon said the problems can be traced back to the loss of Brian Bruney, who was to be the team's primary setup option before elbow issues sidelined him. The Yankees may have the best closer of the modern era in Mariano Rivera, but for now, they have too many untested and unreliable arms trying to get the ball in his hands. The fact that Rivera has pitched just 9 2/3 innings in the first five weeks tells you how that well that experiment's going.

Jason Bay may not be Manny Ramirez, but when it comes to beating the Yankees, he can do a fair impersonation.

"I enjoy the atmosphere of these games," he said.

It shows.

Boston has superior pitching depth.

The Red Sox were thought to have an edge in this department and nothing over their first 27 games has proven that wrong.

The Sox have been without Daisuke Matsuzaka (33 wins over the past two seasons) since the middle of April, but haven't suffered without him. They merely moved into the rotation swingman Justin Masterson, who responded by going 2-1 with an ERA of 4.32 in his first three outings.

Top prospect Clay Buchholz, meanwhile, has sparkled at Triple A Pawtucket, providing yet another option.

The Yankees, conversely, still aren't sure what's wrong with Chien-Ming Wang (34.00 ERA) and Phil Hughes, his replacement, was chased after four innings Monday night.

Dollar-for-dollar, the Red Sox are getting much more for their free-agent bucks.

After being outbid for Mark Teixeira, the Red Sox spent modestly, choosing mostly low-risk, high-reward complementary parts. John Smoltz ($5.5 million) is still aiming for a June return and Rocco Baldelli's contributions have been limited because of a hamstring pull, but Takashi Saito ($1.5 million) has added to their bullpen depth and No. 5 starter Brad Penny ($3 million) has contributed three quality starts in five outings.

The Yanks? Teixeira ($180 million) hinted at a breakout when he homered twice Monday, but is still batting .198. C.C. Sabathia ($161 million) has been surprisingly cautious in his approach and A.J. Burnett ($82.5 million) has been typically enigmatic -- dominant at times, but also capable of blowing a six-run lead, as he did in his first start against the Sox.

The good news? A-Rod's almost ready to return. The bad news? A-Rod's almost ready to return.

Having gone through the first five weeks with Cody Ransom, Ramiro Pena and Angel Berroa giving them next to nothing at third base, the Yanks can't wait to welcome back A-Rod's bat, especially with Teixeira pressing and Jorge Posada placed on the DL Tuesday.

But the Yanks aren't just getting back his offense. They're also getting the distraction and controversy that go hand-in-hand with Rodriguez. For a team which has underachieved to date, the prodigal third baseman could represent a decidedly mixed blessing.

By the way Josey, your boy Joba is an total asshole. He's there on the mound and Jason Bay beats him for a home run. So how does he handle it. He knows he doesn't have to face a pitcher, so instead of doing the right thing like a man and beat Bay with a better strategy and/or a better pitch, he deliberately nails him with a cheap shot pitch right in the back. Now that's a TRUE COWARD! Like mom like son.

Cheers,

Merlot

Manny being Manny? Ramirez banned 50-games!!!!

Manny to serve 50-game suspension

Major League Baseball announced Thursday that Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez has been suspended for 50 games for violating its drug policy.

The commissioner's office didn't announce the specific violation by Ramirez, but in a statement Thursday provided by Major League Baseball, Ramirez attributed the violation to medication he had been prescribed by a doctor.

"Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me," Ramirez said. "Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.

"I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to [Dodgers owner Frank] McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, [manager Joe] Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I'm sorry about this whole situation."

After consultation with the Players' Association and his personal representatives, Ramirez waived his right to challenge the suspension. He will lose about one-third of his $25 million salary.

Ramirez's test result was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Triple-A outfielder Xavier Paul has been told by the Dodgers that he will be promoted later today, according to The Times. Ramirez would be eligible to return to the Dodgers' lineup for their July 3 game against San Diego.

In his first full season as a Dodger, Ramirez is batting .348 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. Los Angeles has bolted to a 21-8 record -- best in the majors -- and a 13-0 record at home that set the modern major league record for home winning streak to start a season.

This is the second major drug revelation to hit baseball in the last few months. In February, Alex Rodriguez admitted taking steroids while playing for Texas from 2001 to 2003. But that was before the start of testing with penalties under a program agreed to by players and management. The New York Yankees star doesn't appear likely to be suspended.

Ramirez is the third player suspended this year under the major league program, following Philadelphia reliever J.C. Romero and Yankees pitcher Sergio Mitre.

Just two relatively low-profile players were suspended under the major league program last year, San Francisco catcher Elizier Alfonzo and Colorado catcher Humberto Coto.

In the past, the best-known player penalized was Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro, who received a 10-day suspension in 2005, the first year of penalties for first infractions.

It is true that the Blue Jays are the most affordable professional sport to watch for sports fans. For around $60, you can get a great field level seat behind the plate on most days. Many Americans i've spoken with at the games were quite impressed with the facilities & couldn't believe how low the price was when they purchased their tickets. This is why many NY fans & Bosox fans would rather come to Toronto to watch baseball games, they told me. The low prices for a baseball game is also why i fell in love with baseball once again. I kind of gave up on baseball after the 1994 strike that shut down the season. However, gradually through the years, i returned to the ballpark gradually since it was the most affordable live sport around. For hockey & basketball games, i'd usually pay around $200 for a ticket!!!!

The closest place to stay to the Rogers Center is within the Rogers Center itself: the Renaissance Hotel (Downtown location). However, rooms are very hard to obtain on game days. If you do manage to obtain a room there, it usually will be a room that isn't facing the field. Those field-facing rooms go for big $$. I recommend staying at the InterContinental Hotel, which is just next to the Rogers Center. Beautiful hotel. It's actually one of the most beautiful hotels i've ever stayed at. There are two I-C hotels in Toronto: one in the Bloor/Yorkville area, and the one downtown. The one you'd want is the one located downtown. It's often listed under 4.5 stars on Hotwire.

Another hotel close to the Rogers Center is the Holiday Inn on King, located a few blocks away. It's close to Gretzky's & Hooters. :D

There's also a Marriott Residence Inn (on Wellington St) in that area. I've seen the rooms & was impressed. And least i forget, the SOHO Metropolitan Hotel, located in the same area as the last two i mentionned.

There's also the prestigious Fairmont Royal York Hotel, located a short walking distance away, across the famous Union Station. You have instant access to the 'underground city' from there. You can walk to the Hilton & Sheraton underground. The Strathcona Hotel is also nearby.

As for myself, i've often stayed at the Sheraton Center & at the Hilton, which are located several blocks away from the Rogers Center. It's a nice walk to the game when it's nice out & you can even stop for an incall on the way to the game. Many of Toronto's finer ladies do incalls at the finer hotels in that area. On the way back, stop by Hooters for some a few beers & some chicken wings.

I'd also recommend the Westin Harbour Castle (if you don't mind walking a bit). It's close to the Air Canada Center & Union Station. It's located in the harbour area, which is beautiful to walk around during the summer.

It's true that those hotels are not as close to the Rogers Center as much as the I-C, Holiday Inn on King, Marriott Residence Inn, SOHO Metropolitan & the Renaissance (Downtown) are, but they're fine hotels who are just a few blocks away.

Canseco Says Manny Cheated

Jose Canseco said he is 90 percent certain that Manny Ramírez's name is on the list of 104 major league players who tested positive for steroids in 2003. Speaking at a forum Friday night at the University of Southern California, Canseco said he believes the reason Ramírez did not receive a long-term contract was because team owners know who is on the list and didn't want to take a chance on the Dodger slugger. "Why didn't Ramírez get a long-term deal?" Canseco asked. "Why were owners gun-shy about signing arguably the game's best hitter?" He said the lack of interest raised red flags, and he told the crowd that Ramírez's "name is most likely, 90 percent" on the list. Canseco did say that he has no way of knowing if Ramírez is on the list. In Sunday's Los Angeles Times, Ramírez said: "I got no comment, nothing to say about that. What can I say? I don't even know the guy."

Before anyone starts with the Canseco is lying dirtbag stuff, I must ask you, who has he accused that turned out to be innocent? Oh right, nobody.

He is a dirtbag, but he hasn't be proven to be a liar yet.

Bosox announcer Jerry Remy goes on leave following cancer surgery setbacks

BOSTON -- Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy is taking an indefinite leave of absence after having setbacks following cancer surgery.

The announcement was made Wednesday on the Web site of New England Sports Network. The 56-year-old Remy does color commentary for the network's Red Sox games.

Remy is a former smoker who had surgery for lung cancer late last year and later developed an infection and pneumonia, according to the site. The former major league second baseman for California and Boston said he disclosed his illness to reinforce the dangers of smoking.

Former pitcher Dennis Eckersley filled in for Remy at Wednesday night's game against the Cleveland Indians beside play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo, who has teamed with Remy since 2001.

"I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions," Remy said on the site. "I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children."

Red Sox Nation is the team's official fan club. Fans elected Remy president of it.

"As part of the NESN family, we want Jerry to concentrate on his health and getting well," NESN president Sean McGrail said. "When he's ready to return, his place in the booth will be waiting for him."

Remy started his major league career with the Angels in 1975 then played for the Red Sox from 1978-84. In 1,154 games he hit .275 with seven homers and 329 RBIs.

Former Phillies manager Danny Ozark passes away at the age of 85

PHILADELPHIA -- Former Philadelphia Phillies manager Danny Ozark has died at his home in Florida. He was 85.

Team officials say Ozark died Thursday morning at his home in Vero Beach.

Ozark led the Phillies to three consecutive National League East titles in the late 1970s but fell short of the World Series each time. He became manager of the Phillies in 1973 and was named Associated Press Manager of the Year in 1976 after leading the Phillies to a 101-61 record.

Ozark had a 594-510 record in seven seasons in Philadelphia. A year after his departure the Phillies won their first World Series under manager Dallas Green.

Ozark is survived by his wife, Ginny, two children and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Crap and Cream

The crap is sinking to the bottom and the cream is rising to the top. I wonder if there are any sports books which offer odds on the Wankees finishing the season under .500.

My theory is that many of the Yankees can't maintain their former level of performance with pharmaceutical enhancement now being more difficult.

Arizona Diamondbacks fire manager Bob Melvin

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks fired Bob Melvin on Thursday, hoping a new manager will be able to get the most out of their talented core of young players.

The Diamondbacks will make A.J. Hinch, their vice president for player development, Melvin's replacement on Friday, according to a person familiar with the move who requested anonymity because the announcement had not been made.

The 34-year-old Hinch is a former major league catcher with no professional managerial experience. His promotion was first reported by radio station KTAR.

The 47-year-old Melvin's firing comes after a disappointing start by the Diamondbacks, who entered Thursday 8½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Melvin, who went 337-340 in four-plus seasons, had one year left on a contract he received after being the 2007 NL Manager of the Year.

"This is a difficult decision, but I feel that our organization needs to move forward with a new voice," general manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement.

Hitting coach Rick Schu also was fired, and pitching coach Bryan Price resigned.

Maybe that's the problem with the Stankees this season. Too many of their players are off steroids after all of those A-Fraud steroids scandals. Geez!! They're awful!! They've just allowed 11 runs to the lowly Orioles & the game is barely 5 innings old!!!

That farmhand Phil "BP" Hughes was pulled in the 2nd inning after allowing 8 earned runs!!!!!!! They suck!!!!!!!!

Busted! Manny Forever Taints Red Sox Championships

By Phil Allard
NYYFans.com Staff Writer
May 7, 2009

Live, therefore, and bear about thy doom with thee, in the eyes of men and women
~ Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter

Gentle Reader:

If you see a Red Sox fan this evening, have some compassion. These people waited 86 years for a World Championship, only to see it rendered shallow, illegitimate, and ignoble by Manny Ramirez’ positive drug test, which was officially announced by Major League Baseball today.

You’ll be able to recognize these Red Sox fans quite easily. They will be the ones talking in hushed tones—their enigmatic faces flushed with shame and sorrow—as they ponder what to say to their kids as they tuck them in tonight.

A lot of conversations will go something like this:

“Not only was Manny a fraud, son, but the Red Sox didn’t deserve to win the 2004 World Series after all. Or the 2007 series. You see, all those home runs he hit…well, well, they weren’t real. That is, I don’t know how to say it: The Red Sox cheated. We always thought it was the Yankees who cheated. But it's us, son. We couldn't break that curse without cheating.”

That sound you hear from the Northeast is the crumbling of thousands of Manny posters as they are ripped off the walls in kids’ bedrooms from Burlington to New Bedford, from Bangor to the Back Bay.

No matter how Sox fans spin this, they can never live down the simple fact that the first World Championship in their lifetime is definitively tainted by a positive drug bust. They waited so long…and now it’s dirty, ill-gotten booty.

No amount of manipulation from Peter Gammons or all the other members of the Red Sox propaganda machine in the Media can change the plain fact that Manny has cast a pall on New England the likes of which has not been seen since Hester Prynne bore her illegitimate child.

Make no mistake. This is a sad day for baseball. The only silver lining is it puts an end to the idiocy of so many in Red Sox Nation who thought their boys were clean, that performance enhancers only went down in New York. There is no longer any point in them shouting "Steroids" at A-Rod when their main basher has been convicted.

Boston fans, take it from one of your own, Bill Simmons:

We look at the 2004 banner again. I always thought that, for the rest of my life, I would look at that banner and think only good thoughts. Now, there's a mental asterisk that won't go away. I wish I could take a pill to shake it from my brain. I see 2004 and 2007 and think of Manny and Papi first and foremost. The modern-day Ruth and Gehrig. One of the great 1-2 punches in sports history. Were they cheating the whole time? Was Pedro cheating, too? That 2004 banner makes me think of these things now. I wish it didn't, but it does. This makes me sad. This makes me profoundly sad.

No one in their right mind would suggest that Manny began juicing this year. Would the Red Sox have won in '04 and '07 anyway? Who knows? But we do know this:

Manny cheated. No matter who tests positive in the future, Manny’s name is permanently secured in the Hall of Infamy. It’s his legacy. And those Red Sox championships? They cheated...kind of like the football team.

Hey Matt Damon…How do you like them apples?

Here is the official release from MLB:

PRESS RELEASE:

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that outfielder Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been suspended for 50 games for a violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Ramirez is effective immediately.

It's never been proven Ramirez has used steroids. He tested positive for a fertility drug (which has often been used by steroids users) and his level of testosterone was abnormally higher. My guess is that it points to steroids use, but it's just a guess & nothing's been proven.

Anyways.....

Both Giambi & A-Fraud have been proven to have used steroids. Gary Sheffield. Even Pettite & Roger Clemens!! They not all might not have been there back in 2004, but they were prominent Yankees at around that time or since. You get the picture. Not wanting to take the defense of the Red Sox, but i don't know of a single Red Sox player who's been suspended or proven to be on steroids over the past decade.

The NY Yankees have been known to be cheaters on mulitiple occasions in the past & are known to employ past cheaters. The list is long. Very long.
