Not the Point

rumpleforeskiin said:
Seems to me that you've done an admirable job of proving the point you're claiming to refute. If, over as large a sampling as you've used, a top tier team has "purchased" 6 wins per season that a bottom tier team cannot afford, it's quite clear that money is a large factor.

There's an awful lot that goes into building a team: scouting and development, trading, acquiring free agents, effective team management. That one factor, $$$$, can skew things by as much as six games is pretty huge.

Not the point. ZM clearly shows that having a chance to win the ultimate goal - a World Series Championship is not a function of money. A point further supported by the participants in this years World Series. Also by the fact that 9 out of the top tier teams did not make it.

An analogy would be driving from Montreal to Toronto. At the speed limit a $100,000 car will get you there just as quickly as a $10,000 car. Unforeseen delays are not a function of the cost of the car but the drivers knowledge of alternate routes may help avoid or shorten them.

Your building analogy is insufficient. If the discussion was a comparison of expansion teams or teams starting from zero every year it would suffice.

The choices facing teams are 1.)building,2.)maintaining,3.)renovating or 4.)demolishing and starting over. The success of certain recent expansion teams - Marlins,D-Backs,Rockies has shown that building from nothing has the advantage of working without the history of previous mistakes. This was a default choice since the other three scenarios were not available. The Marlins have shown that 1.) and 4.) are viable, both within a short time frame BUT they were in a market where TV,advertising and season ticket or luxury box revenues would not be significantly impacted. Certain markets and team history preclude options 1.) and 4.).

Most of the analysis, I can follow and with which I don't have a lot of problems. I would suggest, however, that I'd not really use the last sentence above as any real support, given that I would be utterly amazed if more than 2 of the top 10 (? - original ZM quote only listed 9 team names in the top tier) salaried teams managed to make it to this year's World Series.

Sorry, tired, can't sleep, will try again... :(

My bad. Add the Braves to the list.

Any two of the top 10 salaried team.....

p.s. This thread's premise - "Yankees sucks" - "your" premise, btw, proves the point you're claiming to refute.
Yes, the Yankees suck, but top tier teams are 6 games better in the standings than bottom tier teams. Money talks. 6 games is significant.

So you have no explanation for Arizona, Cleveland and the current WS finalist Colorado, 3 bottom tiers representatives, doing better in the playoffs than 9 of the 10 top tiers representatives? How do you reconcile the apparent contradiction?

Good management and player development, plus the fact that one of the top tier teams is the Yankees, who, incidentally, suck.:D

Is Youkilis gay?

Doesn't Youkilis have the gayest batting stance that anybody has ever seen, the way he poses and jerks up and down in the batter's box you could swear that it is a reaction to him getting fucked up the ass too many times.

I would bet money that he and Epstein are getting it on, just take a good look at the two of them.

Sorry, all - overtired when I wrote yesterday (barely awake now). Guess my "point" was that at least 8 top-tier teams can't make the World Series on any given year. This year, there were 4 AL teams and 6 NL teams in the top tier. If, for some strange reason, next year all 10 of the highest-salaried teams happened to be NL teams... well, again, at least 9 teams aren't gonna make the WS.

If Series success was a function of money, I'd think the top $ team in each league would be in the WS. Does it happen? Not so often.

Now, does $ help you make the playoffs, where performance against certain teams gets you into the WS?

Sorry... drifting again... I'll hush and stay hushed now.

I was just making a observation, why don't you take a good look at him the next he bats and judge for yourself, the way he position's himself and sticks his ass out and jerks up and down in the batter's box makes me wonder about the guy.

Missed tag.

Hello all,

Incredible. The best replay shows Ramirez may not have been tagged at all while he did touch home plate.

Now Matsuzaka gets a hit and scores two. So much for the rusty American League pitcher/National League advantage theory.

Boom boom,

Damn.

Hello all,

Damn how I hate walks.

Red Sox 10
Rockies 5

Matsuzaka did extremely well, and would not have come out early in the 6th if he had not walked two in a row. But he is sure the pitcher we paid for in his last two starts. So how about that Joe.t. Yeah...I know...you'd have to commit hari kari if you said anything decent about him...lol. Oh yeah...how about one more supremely hypocritical comment about the Red Sox buying the World Series...pleeeeeaaaase.
Up 3-0 games,

Korbel

Hello Joe.t,

I knew you could do it. That a Boy. No accomplishment for you to sound UTTERLY RIDICULOUS. Thank for delegitimizing the Yankers championships since 1977. Have you looked at the salary inflation caused largely by Steinbrenner's salary excesses between 1995-2005. YOU HAVE NO SHAME...except for a shameful hypocrisy!

Just laughable,

Korbel
