It's really incredible what that line has been doing. Pastrnak has 15 goals in 16 games!!!!!!!!! That is a crazy 80 goal pace. Meanwhile Bergeron has tied Rantanen for the NHL points lead.

Meanwhile the Rangers are 5-0-1 in their last 6 and now are over .500 with their record. Dave Quinn's mantra is "rebuilding is for losers."

Not hard to understand why- they have given up more goals (67) than any NHL team other than Ottawa. Their defense quite simply sucks monkey balls. Ottawa has given up 4.22 goals per game, Chicago 3.72.

Pittsburgh is also 'sucking donkey balls' so far this season. And after seeing the Leafs destroy LA last night i realize that John Stevens wasn't the problem prior to his firing. That team really sucks donkey balls!

Maybe it's a sign that the better teams of the past have seen their better days pass them by & it's time for a reset in those organizations. Boston may have seen this coming a couple of years ago & fired Claude Julien. They got criticized severely for it but once Bruce Cassidy took over they've been very successful and haven't looked back. They're currently one of the top teams in the East and have been since Cassidy took over.

Toronto decided to clean house & rebuild from scratch a few years ago. They hired the likes of Brendan Shanahan, Lou Lamoriello, Mike Babcock, Kyle Dubas & Mark Hunter & revamped the entire organization from the scouting department to analytics. The 'hurt' which was supposed to last up to 5 years actually lasted only 1 year which gave them the opportunity to draft generational franchise player Auston Matthews & the team has been on a tear since. Prior to the start of this season the Vegas oddsmakers had them slotted as favorites to win the Cup this season.

And take the Detroit Red Wings. They really are the 'dead things' this season, being among the worse teams in the league. But to their credit it appears that they saw the signs last season or so and have started rebuilding. One of the top teams over the past two decades, the Red Wings remind me of how bad their were throughout the 1970's. Has the owner's passing had a negative effect on the team? Possibly. But this is a team which has relied heavily on its European stars over the years (Lidstrom, Datsyiuk, Zetterberg) and it was only natural that they'd struggle once those players either retired or moved back to Europe.

And then you have the Habs. They were expected to struggle badly this season but so far have been surprising & to their credit extremely entertaining to watch. They're one of the league's quickest teams & have shown the ability to win although their defence is very average at best. Their franchise player has struggled badly so far and shockingly appears to be holding the team's progress back. Everyone close to the habs are hoping that he'll soon regain his form & once again retain his status as one of the game's top goalkeepers. But something isn't right with him. He himself mentioned the other day that his problems are mental in nature. What did he mean by this? He's 31 years old and in the first year of an incredibly lucrative 8-year contract which made him the top-paid goaltender in the history of the game. Now is not the time to appear washed-up!!!

By the way i know it's early but it's starting to appear that San Jose acquisition of Erik Karlsson might not have been such a good move, after all. Karlsson has struggled badly throughout the first couple of months of the season. But the team itself has been very successful so far which has helped hide Karlsson's struggles.

Goalies Shots Faced Leaders

Have you wondered which goalies are likely to get worn out by battle fatigue from too many shots faced? Last year Freddie Anderson led all NHL goalies in shots faced by an extremely wide margin. This year Freddie is still in the top 4 in the NHL in shots faced, but the goalie most abused and abandoned by his defense is the beleaguered Craig Anderson of Ottawa:

13 games, 475 shots faced, 36.5 shots faced per game. Can someone give this guy a rest?

Trade!!!!!

The Pittsburgh Penguins just acquired Tanner Pearson from the LA Kings for Carl Hagelin.

Pearson currently has zero goals an one assist. Hagelin has one goal and two assists. Both have had tough starts to the season. Pearson has two more years left on his contract while Hagelin is currently serving the final year of his.

This trade appears to be nothing for nothing rather than something for something or something for nothing. I just don’t understand why the Penguins agreed to take on 2 more years for a guy who isn’t doing anything in exchange for another whose contract will end this year. I have to surmise the Penguins believe a change of scenery and/or system will serve to rejuvenate Pearson, otherwise the trade doesn’t make much sense from the Pittsburgh standpoint. I don’t like trades like this when a team is going badly. It’s like squeezing a tiny zit on your nose but not doing anything about the 104 degree fever you are running.

Tampa Bay goalie Vasilevsky is out for a while with a broken foot. He's among the best goalies in the league & this will likely hurt Tampa.
