Two weeks ago, i learned that the Leafs had made the best offer for Tomas Vanek. The Islanders wanted to take their offer. However, as they got close to the deadline, the Leafs were unable to free up some cap room in order to accomodate Vanek's contract. When the deal fell through, the Islanders turned around and accepted Marc Bergevin's offer from the habs.

As we now know, Vanek has been a huge addition to the habs and the line of Vanek-Desharnais-Pacioretty is now one of the league's top lines and Pacioretty is now closing in on a 40-goal season. Bergevin, even though he hadn't done much since becoming the team's GM, is now looked upon as a genius for having committed the Vanek theft from the Islanders & has been one of the main reasons for the team's turnaround since the trade deadline.

The opposite could have happened to the Leafs had they acquired Vanek. However, the problems that are currently plaguing the Leafs have been plaguing them all season long and i'm not sure that acquiring Vanek might have made that much of a difference. Sure, having Vanek on the Lupul-Kadri line would have looked better than say, Nikolai Kulemin. Maybe providing secondary scoring (which has been lacking all season long) might have taken some of the heat off the first line and the entire team might have played better, who knows.

I expect Randy Carlyle & his assistants to be fired soon after the regular season ends. Other players i expect to be gone by the summer are Kulemin, Bolland, McLaren, Franson, Reimer, Orr & possibly Gleeson. Randy Carlyle likes big, immobile defencemen and if he isn't back next season, the team will have no use for some of the players i've listed. It also wouldn't surprise me to see Nazem Kadri or Joffrey Lupul get traded. Lupul will be 31 next season & his history of missing many games due to injuries has kept on haunting him. As he grows older, the problem won't go away.

Where the team went wrong?

Signing Clarkson to such a long contract doesn't look very good right now. I was one of many who was overjoyed to see him joining the Leafs since he always played his best hockey against the Leafs whenever i watched him. But he skates awkwardly & falls down way too often. Looks like the Leafs will be stuck with him for at least another 5 years before they decide to maybe buy him out.

Tim Gleeson for J-M Liles was not a good trade. Gleeson is big, is very slow and has zero scoring touch. Liles on the other hand is very quick & is gifted offensively. He was also great among the Toronto community with his charity work & always a great interview. The players he played with all loved him and some even cried when they heard he had been traded. However, grumpy Carlyle hates small offensively-gifted defencemen and there's no chance he would have played even if he hadn't been traded. Let's put it this way: if the Undertaker could skate, Carlyle would have dressed him in front of Liles.

Giving Dion Phaneuf the captaincy immediately after he was traded to Toronto was one of Brian Burke's biggest mistakes. Phaneuf hadn't matured enough to be named captain so quickly & he hadn't even played a game with the Leafs yet, which was a major snub to the current Leafs at the time. Phaneuf is also a very dull person & a lousy interview. When he refused to address the media recently after a loss, i wondered why everyone was complaining. I thought "do they really want to hear this guy speak??" Phaneuf has become a polarizing figure on the Leafs team...similar to the likes of Larry Murphy & others who once played for the Leafs. Having been burdened with the captaincy hasn't helped, on top of being awarded that big contract. If management wants to do a huge favor to Phaneuf & get him back to playing better (and cut down on those damn giveaways!), they should take the captaincy away from him next season. The only candidate right now i'd give it to is Joffrey Lupul, who has leadership qualities and loves speaking to the media. Phaneuf hates talking to the media, but only does it because it's required of him.

The Leafs also must get Leo Komarov back here. They figured they had replaced his toughness and intensity with David Clarkson's acquistion, but Clarkson has been a huge bust.

But i put a large part of the blame on Randy Carlyle for forcing out the likes of Mikael Grabovski and Clark MacArthur from Toronto. Grabovski's presence alone would have been a boost to this team. As gritty as anyone on that team, he wasn't used properly by Carlyle, who wanted to turn him into a 3-rd line defensive center. MacArthur also had grit and a decent two-way player. Both of these players didn't have very nice things to say about grumpy Carlyle after they were let go by the team. Grabovski even called him a fucking idiot. MacArthur's words were a tad nicer.

And finally, getting rid of the speedy & very tough Mike Brown, who was very well-liked among team members, in favor of the big and very slow Frazier McLaren was huge mistake. Brown could play on the 3rd or 4th line on a nightly basis. He is quick & had a bit of a scoring touch. He would be willing to drop the gloves against anyone in the league and more often than not would win the fight. McLaren is a one-dimensional player: all he can do is fight. He can't skate and has zero scoring touch. He's a younger George Parros. Players like him nearly never play. Plus, the already had Colton Orr who was basically the same player, but with a bit more skilled. Orr has barely played due to injuries and for the simple fact teams have stopped playing the Leafs game and won't fight anymore. You then have dressed those players for nothing and they're a liability when they're on the ice.

I have no idea who'll replace Carlyle once he's fired. Right now i don't see anyone currently unemployed who could step in and be an improvement. However, knowing Tim Leiweke, he probably has a plan already and it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't go out of his way to lure Mike Babcock to Toronto. Babcock has only 1 year left on his contract with the Wings. If he can't get him out of that 1 year left, Leafs management might decide to hold on to Carlyle for one more season and then hire Babcock the minute his contract expires. But who knows who'll get fired by the end of the season. One rumoured coach to be fired is Nashville's long-time coach Barry Trotz & many believe he'd be a breath of fresh air in Toronto. What about Kirk Muller? How about Paul Maurice? We'll see what happens.........

Shanahan officially hired by MLSE as Leafs President; Babcock next?

Brendan Shanahan officially hired by the Maple Leafs as the President of the hockey team. Official press conference will be held Monday morning. Stephane Quintal takes over for Shanahan at the NHL office.

There is talk in Toronto that one of the several reasons the move was made was in order to get Mike Babcock in Toronto. He's got only one year left on his contract in Detroit & anyone with a brain knows that living in Toronto is hundreds of times better than living in that giant scrap yard called 'Detroit'. Whether that move will be held in the near future or next year isn't yet known. However, i doubt Detroit would want to hold on to a coach who's set on leaving the organization as soon as his contract is over.

Gunnar was one of the guys i might send to the doghouse also. He ended up with the best plus/minus on the team but that stat is so overrated. Gardiner the last 30 games was a beast and they were either showcasing him for a trade this summer or decided he is a mainstay in the top 4 from now on. He is a great skater and would be a 3/4 dman on many teams and some a #2. I would like to believe Gardiner and Reilly will be 2 young guys that the Leafs can build their D around for years to come. Franson, goodbye! Gleason, goodbye! Ranger was playing well right b4 he got hammered into the boards and i could see them bringing him back for another one year deal if on the cheap, to be the 7th dman and see if he can once again gain the form he had in Tampa. I would not be upset if Gunnarson was dealt for an upgrade.

I do feel that Granberg has a shot to make the team out of camp next season. Also i can see D'Amigo making the club and hope that Komorov comes back. Bolland is a tough call... i would love him back BUT at what cost? He is gonna want 4-5 mill on a long term deal I hear and with the injury he just had this season, that is a huge risk to take.
Gunnarson should be in the doghouse. He was atrocious in the last leg of the season. I wasn't impressed with Gardiner either.

I agree with Iggy about Bozak.

Leafs coach Randy Carlyle's contract extension a clever compromise

by David Shoalts, The Globe and Mail

Randy Carlyle may look like one of the great survivors today because he skipped out from under the axe with a two-year contract extension but the clock is still ticking.

Unless the head coach can get a substantial improvement out of what is sure to be a re-tooled Toronto Maple Leafs roster next season, he will be fired. That two-year extension is not what it appears. On the one hand, it is the message Leafs management wants to send to the players. Carlyle will not be a lame-duck coach in the last year of his contract and vulnerable to slackers who would like to see him fired. His contract is guaranteed for next season and for 2015-16 as well. But that is as far as it goes.

Carlyle had one year left on his existing contract – the 2014-15 season. If Leafs general manager David Nonis had not been able to persuade team president Brendan Shanahan to keep Carlyle, the Leafs would have had to pay Carlyle for the coming season.

Carlyle happens to be an excellent coach and if the Leafs fired him another team likely would have quickly snapped him up, probably the Florida Panthers. In that case, NHL custom would have dictated Carlyle’s Leafs salary for next season would be deducted from his salary with the new team as the price of allowing the team to sign a coach who was already under contract. That would have wiped out the financial obligation the Leafs had to Carlyle but Shanahan and Nonis could not count on that when they considered his fate. They had to plan that firing Carlyle right now would cost them next season’s salary, say around $2-million (all currency U.S.).

So Shanahan came up with a clever compromise that gave Nonis his way, put pressure on Carlyle to turn things around and still allows the new president to force the hiring of his own coach as early as part way through next season if things do not improve. Or maybe Nonis laid it out as a way of saving Carlyle. Our sources weren’t clear on whose idea it was, just that this is the way it went.

The twist was that the announced two-year extension is actually one year guaranteed and one year at the club’s option. This gave Carlyle the security he needs to handle next season’s version of the Leafs but does not commit the Leafs to anything beyond one year after that.

If the Leafs fired Carlyle this week, they would have owed him one year’s pay (presuming there are no specific severance terms in the contract). If things don’t go well and the Leafs fire Carlyle one year from now they will still owe him one year’s pay. In that respect, nothing changes, just the timing.

This did not happen solely because as Nonis said, Carlyle “is the right coach for our team.” Nonis sincerely believes that and good for him for sticking by his man in the face of all that noise calling for Carlyle’s head.

But Shanahan needed some convincing and this is where Carlyle had luck on his side. Before he agreed with Nonis, Shanahan took a long look at the coaches who were available. He decided none of them were better than Carlyle.

A year from now, if Carlyle doesn’t win enough to please management, Shanahan will look again and maybe the candidates are better. Then the Leafs will write that cheque to Carlyle. But for now, he’s their man.

However, Carlyle will need all of his coaching guile to survive. At this point, he has the same core group of players that let him down in March and no idea who will replace the rather large number of players Nonis hopes to ship out. Plus, since management ordered the firing of most of the assistant coaches Carlyle will no longer have Dave Farrish, his best friend and most trusted assistant, to lean on.

Carlyle's extension not what it appears

Fan Fest Set for September

By: Kevin McGran Sports Reporter, Published on Fri Jun 20 2014

The cynics will say it’s another way to make a buck. The Leafs will say it’s a unique way to become a little more of a fan-friendly organization.
And fans are probably going to say, “Wait, I can drop the puck at centre ice? And then I can visit the Leafs dressing room? That’s awesome.”
The Maple Leafs have announced a three-day Fan Fest (Sept. 5-7), a kind of pre-season kickoff, that will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the Air Canada Centre and some face time with players, alumni and the front office.

Tickets range from $57 to $87.
What the team is promising:
Autographs and photos with your favourite Toronto Maple Leafs
A chance to hear from Maple Leafs management including president Brendan Shanahan and general manager Dave Nonis.
A chance to meet Leafs alumni.
A tour of the Leafs dressing room.
A chance to drop the puck at centre ice
The ability to test your skills at the combine camp

Of course, many things will be for sale, including new hockey gear and more than 2,000 pieces of game-worn gear.
The idea — a kind of a Comic-Con for sports fans — is gaining traction. The Chicago Blackhawks are holding their seventh annual summer convention July 18-20.

Extremely happy with the First Round Pick of William Nylander, EXTEMELY! :thumb:

Indeed! Since he recently quit acting, Willie a.k.a. 'King Joffrey' will concentrate more on hockey & hopefully start the season with the Leafs! :D

The "Shanny Influence" is all over this Pick of Nylander. While in past years the Leafs brass have been taking size with the likes ofTyler Biggs, Frederick Gauthier etc.... (minus Nazem Kadri and Morgan Rielly most notable, as verk skilled) they have went for a high risk high reward in skill with Nylander. I Love this Pick! Have i said that yet? ;)

Roman Polak for Gunnerson today? Gunnar has a bum hip and who knows how he will be moving forward. Polak is a physical stay at home D man, trade approved :thumb:

Gunnerson for Polak only happened because Josh Gorges refused a trade to Toronto. Roman Polak will help, a little.

Leafs sign Franson & avoid arbitration

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs and Cody Franson have avoided arbitration with a one-year contract worth US$3.3 million.

It’s the third straight one-year deal for Franson, who missed most of training camp last season after a contract dispute.

With this one, the 26-year-old gets a raise from the $2 million he made in 2013-14, when he led all Toronto defencemen with 33 points (five goals, 28 assists) and ranked second in the NHL in hits (282).

Franson, a third-round pick of the Nashville Predators in 2005, has 28 goals and 105 assists and a plus-eight rating in 322 career NHL games.

The six-foot-five 213-pound native of Sicamous, B.C., was acquired by the Maple Leafs along with Matthew Lombardi from the Predators on July 3, 2011 in exchange for Brett Lebda and Robert Slaney.

Doc,

Great Moves this offseason continue! Now trade Reimer and Franson for picks in the deepest draft in years (2015) promote from within on D (Granberg and possibly Pearcy or another young buck on D and maybe sign a veteran backup for "Big Game" Bernier) Excited for the new season?

I believe the Leafs just hired their future GM & that Nonis is quite aware that his days with the Leafs are counted until the young has a year or two of experience under his belt.

As far as Franson goes, i have a feeling he'll remain with the club. He'll be difficult to trade since he'll be UFA next season.

The Leafs had already agreed to trade him to Montreal for Josh Gorges until Gorges nixed that trade. So there is definitely interest in Mtl for Franson. However, it'll likely all depend on what happens with the P.K. Subban situation. Subban is headed to arbitration & it wouldn't surprise me if he signs a one-year or two-year deal with the habs if he avoids arbitration. This way, he'll be UFA once his contract expires & be free to play where he wants & be one of the highest paid players in the game.

That's the drawback of having such a player win a trophy such as the Norris & then be named to the Olympic team (even though he barely played). It goes up to their heads & they become problematic to the team. Subban, i've been told, now wants at least $10 million+ per season in order to remain with the habs. If Bergevin doesn't want to pay him what he wants (i can't blame Bergevin), P.K. will simply sign for shorter term & then kiss the Habs goodbye once he's UFA eligible.

I doubt pernell carl goes anywhere and will sign a max contract in the 75 to 85 mil range. Grossly overpaid but supply and demand is at play here (like with Phaneuf only Dion is just overpaid, not grossly overpaid) and "if" pernell carl ever learns how to play a solid defensive game then he would be worth it but as is they should make him a winger and sign a real defensman to take his place.

The problem with PK is that the habs don't really want to sign him long term for the money he's asking. In his own mind, he may also think he can get up to $15 million per year on the free market if he waits another year or two.

As for Phaneuf, its hard to say he is overpaid when he's had no quality defensive partner since he first arrived in Toronto, yet he is still the best defenceman there. In a couple of years or so, his contract will look reasonable with all the salaries climbing.

Excellent Point about Captain Canada Doc!

As fas as i am concerned Phil Kessel is the real PK and i hope pernel karl holds out and makes the canadians cave to his demands say by december. :)
