And RC is no longer there so what he says is now irrelevant. They might have just been Randy's Rules and not "Team" rules, but who knows?

You are correct, as always. I was also wondering if AV was even aware that RC was no longer with the Leafs organization.
Another reason why i believe RC is wrong is that many organizations in the past have implemented gag orders on their players. Of course, players were free to speak to the media, but would have been in big trouble with the coach (and organization) should they have disobeyed the order.
So basically, this is how it is: certain coaches & organizations want their players to be fully accessible to the media. That's why PR people meet them early into the season to go through the various talking points to be used during a season whenever they're addressing the media, and how to react to a question they may not be comfortable with. Many of the coaches, especially those who used to play in the NHL and were expected to speak to the media, feel that it's a player's obligation to do so. However, back in those days, players were very close to reporters as compared to today. Some players were even best of friends with some of the reporters. Same with coaches and reporters. This is why many potential scandals were never reported and kept hush-hush.
But other organizations simply don't care what the players do or say to the media as long as they don't embarrass the organization. Do you actually believe that any hockey organization wants Ilya Bryzgalov to address the media?? But to be fair, many hockey organizations don't have much media to deal with as compared to the Canadian cities. A player once said that only 1 or 2 reporters cover many US-based teams and couldn't believe the difference in cities such as Toronto and Montreal.
So if i'd happen to be a paranoid coach or executive and fear what may come out of the mouth of my players, i may be tempted to tell them to shut the f$&# up and only allow the team captain and the alternate captains to address the media....and be extremely vigilant with their words.
I agree with you on most of what you posted above. However, no player will be fired for refusing to speak with reporters. Don Fehr & the NHLPA would take care of the matter if it were ever to happen.

Leiweke still set on leaving MLSE in June
Tim Leiweke is remaining true to his word that he’s leaving his position as CEO and president of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.
According to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox, reports were circulating that MLSE would try to convince Leiweke to stay beyond his June 30th departure date.
“The feeling seems to be he’s not interested in staying beyond the end of June,” said Cox.
Leiweke made the announcement in August that he would be leaving MLSE by June 2015, or until a suitable replacement has been found.
He joined MLSE in April 2013.
I heard a few days ago that MLSE was very surprised several of the people they targeted for the job were not interested in taking over as the company's CEO. Personally, i'm not surprised considering all the inner poltics crap going on since arch-rival Bell and Rogers became partners in the corporation. But i was surprised to hear that Leweike's biggest nemesis was minority owner Larry Tannenbaum & that there were whispers Tannenbaum was asked to sell his minority interest recently if it meant being able to retain Leweike. Word i got was that Tannenbaum refused to sell his shares. But it shouldn't be all that surprising, considering that Brian Burke & Tom Anselmi were both shown the door and they were both very close to Tannenbaum.
One rumour circulating was that Tim Leweike's younger brother may be approached to take over, but others i've spoken to denied this was the case & added he'd likely refuse the offer. My guess is that a local CEO will likely get the nod for the job, even though he likely wasn't the board's first, second or even third choice.
There will always be petty politics going around MLSE as long as the strange Rogers/Bell marriage remains. Eventually, one of the two will break & decide they've had enough and leave the organization in a buy-out.

Likely a few minor trades prior to the trade deadline. Probably players on expiring contracts, such as Lupul.
Dave Nonis will be replaced by Mark Hunter after the regular season ends.
Mike Babcock will be the new Leafs head coach once Detroit's season ends.
The trades may happen soon than later in order for the Leafs to position themselves better for the upcoming draft. No chance to get McDavid or Ertel, but good chances to get the 3rd to 5th-ranked picks, which will also be very good players.
Another problem with the Leafs is that they've become a team of wusses!
Last night, at least 3-4 Canes players were taking liberties at the Leafs captain. No one stuck up for their captain. The only players willing to drop the gloves once in a while are Phaneuf and Clarkson, and Clarkson isn't very good at it. Troy Bodie did it once recently, but he had only played one game. I can't remember any other player fighting this season & this is due to the team's new philosophy when the season started. I doubt it was Carlyle's idea, so i figure it came right from the top.
I'm not really pro-fighting, but at least it makes the games a bit more exciting. It also imposes respect & warns other teams that if they take liberties at the Leafs players, there will be a price to pay. That's how the Leafs played two years ago and they were one of the most feared team in the league. They had truculence and were willing to go into the trenches to battle for their mates.
Now, with Colton Orr & Frazier McLaren spending the entire season on the farm, the team has become somewhat of a joke when it comes to team toughness. I still miss Mike Brown & still feel that going with McLaren over Brown was a boneheaded move by management. At least Brown could skate well & had a bit of skill, which McLaren doesn't have & never will ahve.
Too many players have been going through the motions & suffering from blue & white disease this season. I'm not blaming Kessel, Bozak & JVR since those guys will never become tough, character players. Neither will Reilly or Gardiner. Signing Gardiner to a long, expensive contract was a mistake. He had never proven that he deserved it & has always been a defensive liability. Okay, i'm ready to admit that the David Clarkson was a bad move, but at the time everyone was all for it & he even accepted less money to sign with the Leafs than he would have got from Edmonton and Ottawa. Stephane Robidas has been a huge disappointment and he was signed for 3 years. One year would have been okay, but three years???
Phaneuf has been okay. He's been overused, but what do you expect when they don't really have a bonafide #1 defenceman? Give that team a true #1 defenceman and Phaneuf's value will increase dramatically. But the only way to get a true #1 defenceman is by trading some of your top assets, which the Leafs don't have much of. Should they trade Phil Kessel for a #1 defenceman? If so, who sill score goals for a team that is badly struggling scoring goals? Could future star Morgan Rielly fetch a current #1 defenceman? Should the Leafs trade their #1 upcoming pick for that #1 defenceman? And what is upcoming RFA Jonathan Bernier really worth? Half of the goalies in the league are bigger than he is, and he hasn't won games by himself much this season.
And finally, i'm sick of James Reimer. He's been among the worse goalies in the league this season & i'm certain he still believes he's a #1 goalie (yeah, in his dreams!). This season would have been great for the Leafs to sign Martin Brodeur, which nearly happened had they been able to find a team that wanted Reimer.

You have some good ideas Doc. I would like to tell Leafs nation ,things can turn around quickly in the NHL. Remember the Canadians three years ago and look at the now. It takes leadership and a plan of where you want to go, a little luck does not hurt either. What I did not like seeing is how they do not stand up for one another. Gone are the days of W. Clark ,Doug Gilmour.
As a lifelong Habs fan and a Leaf hater I can't say that the disarray of the Leafs makes me unhappy. I for one couldn't care less if they ever win another game....................a Stanley Cup, who are we kidding. All the joking aside from someone on the outside it would appear to me that this is a team without leadership. Brendan Shannahan has to make some hard decisions at the end of what looks like a lost season for this storied franchise. Decisions in the area of scouting, management as well as coach need to be addressed. Building a winner is a 5 year job and the people in place at the moment do not seem to have the vision to make the decisions necessary to take the steps to become a winner. Kessel was a huge mistake and some of the other cancers on this team need to be addressed as well. If you aren't proud to be a member of this team and aren't prepared to give your all to winning, out the door. Winning in anything is an attitude and it appears that a lot of these players have trown up their hands and said who cares, time to deal them for draft picks that will want to be there and have a positive attitude. Fans will support a change of the team if it has direction, time to give them what they pay for !!!!!
