Nice piece rumples. It will be interesting to see. I just read the SI analysis in which they once again went out on a limb and picked the Yankees to win the division. They further pick the Rays to finish second and the Red Sox third in the AL East. But what I particularly like about the analysis you point out is the depth of the Boston team. Surface analysis are great - IF - and its always a big IF, your starters stay healthy. I can site plenty of examples, but no need. It will come down to who stays healthy and plays better ball.

Hello Jman,

The trouble with sabermetrics-like analysis is how things work out in the real world. Sabermetrics tends to forget that the "human factor" isn't very mathematical. Health will definitely be a key as always, and when winning is based more on defense that relies on easy mobility good consistent health becomes more critical. However..

Let's play ball!

Where I belong.

Of course this is true, but that doesn't change the fact that sabermetric projections are still more accurate than those done by journalists.

Speaking of the human factor, Nick "The Human Pre-Existing Condition" is already hurt. Normally, you'd expect a guy who'd bruised his knee with a foul ball to only miss a couple of days, but in Johnson's case, look for him in mid-May.

Johnson is not the only Yankee hurt going into opening day. Looks like Posada, Marte and Aceves are hurt also.

In Red Sox news, Kevin Youkilis fouled a ball off of his knee, similar to what Johnson did this week. He sat out a game and will be in the Sox line up to start the season.

Looks like Francona has decided on a lineup to start the year. Barring a last-minute change of heart, the Red Sox will probably go with the following order: Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, J.D. Drew, Adrian Beltre, Mike Cameron and Marco Scutaro.

Other than Hermidia with some hamstring issues it appears the rest of Boston's team is healthy.

First pitch - Sunday 8:05 p.m. ... at America's Most Beloved Ballpark...
GO SOX!!!

I was just watching NESN and saw Kevin Youkilis being interviewed by a very beautiful blonde. Anyone know her name? She did not exactly ask the most piercing or insightful questions, but was very good eye candy. I wondered whether Youkilis was getting a hard on looking at her. She was sitting down with Youkilis on a spring training field and I could see her hands and she has beautiful hands as well.

Yeah SK, that's her. She was asking questions of Youkilis like, "do you like playing 1st Base more than 3rd?" LOL. Who cares what position Youkilis likes playing. He is a major leaguer and he plays where his team needs him whether he likes it or not. But I must say she looked good asking those questions.

Might as well get this started now that spring training's in full swing and the regular season is just under 3 weeks away.

Let's try to be respectful in this thread. I'd rather not see references like "Spankees" "ARoid" "Big Poopie" "Roid Sux" "Bwwwwwaahhhh!!!" etc. ;)

Some people need a sense of humor, or is this turing into a communist board in this thread? there was no "roid sux" no "big poopie" and i have yet to understand why "bwhahahahahahahaahha" upsets some people so much, its no different than a "lol" or one of jmans silly smiley indications (since he still has not got "real smileys", lol) ....... loosen the neck ties people, i think it is cutting the circulation to your sense of humor. geez!

No Iggy, we were just trying to keep it about baseball and not insulting...and you happened to insert the pic of a dumpster for Fenway...that's pure F**ktard...not communist. And what does communism have to do with a sense of humor anyway?!

I don't think anyone would have said a word had you put a pic of Fenway vs Yankee stadium and left out the Waste Management comment...anyway, too late now and I'm out on the subject.

Have fun,

Jman

Good Article to get Yanks/Sox Fans ready for Game1

The wait is almost over as Sunday kicks off the MLB season for real. The Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees in baseball’s best rivalry. ESPN2 will broadcast at 8 pm ET.

Defending champion New York is the 11/4 favorite to win the World Series. Boston is tied for second with Philly at 6/1.

Boston won the first eight meetings between the teams last year, including going 6-0 at Fenway. The second half was the complete opposite as New York went 9-1 overall and 2-1 in Beantown.

Josh Beckett (17-6, 3.86 ERA) will get the start for Boston. He’s working on a four-year extension with the team, and is a co-ace along with Jon Lester and newly acquired John Lackey.

Beckett made five starts against New York last year, going 2-1 with a 5.34 ERA. However, he’s had success in the past against them and he’s the guy you want on the mound in a big game.

Pitching for New York is C.C. Sabathia (19-8, 3.37 ERA). He signed a mammoth free agent contract before last year, but he delivered big-time – all the way through the World Series.

Sabathia pitched pretty well against Boston last year, 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA. However, he wasn’t that great in his Fenway starts, going 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA.

New York has the much better offense as Boston spent its money upgrading pitching and defense.

I like the Yanks to start off with a win.
