Big surprise, first f**ktard by Iggy before the first pitch.
Mark the date and time 2:44 p.m. on April 3, 2010.

Hello SK and Jman,

Predicting who would make the first F'tard was no challenge at all.

i hey you sure didnt mind the Pic Merlot posted of Varitek pushing his catchers mit into Arod's face in a post earlier, that wasnt a insult to Yankees fans?

The photo is a record of history, a fact, not an insult. I added no comment to it. I left it as is, and it records only what actually happened. No unaltered photo of an event in a game is an insult, no matter how annoying someone finds it. We don't like your championship photos, but we aren't calling them f'tards because they aren't. It's what happened. That's all. That's the difference. I thought your stadium comparison was funny. But, it's definitely in the f'tard range.

Hope for this year:

One thing that should be different this year is the health factor. Last year the Red Sox seemed to go through so many injuries all year, critically including their best pitcher in the first half of the year, Wakefield. The Yankees seemed to be almost without injury after May. In all reasonable expectations this factor should be more balanced this year.

Also the Sox had a number of reclamation project pitchers last year that showed some signs of value, but faded badly. Then there was our friend Matsuzaka who put a huge burden on the pitching staff by getting injured and becoming nearly useless most of the year. This year the starting rotation should be much more secure and reliable.

My biggest worries about the Red Sox are power and the record of strikeouts some of the new players have consistently made in past seasons. Hopefully, a new team and new coaches like Dave Magadan can find a way to correct the latter weaknesses.

Cheers,

Merlot

Another great article to get the juices flowing for Tomm Night!

The rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox is already intense. Throw in a couple of new twists and the hype soars.

Sunday night's game between the storied franchises is the first of the 2010 season, a prime-time showcase all to themselves while other teams wait until Monday for opening day.

And New York starts off as defending champions for the first time since its 2001 opener.

"It's special," Mark Teixeira said. "You're not going to be able to go into the season as defending World Series champs every single year. So when you get a chance to do that, it makes the start of the season that much more fun."

A handful of Boston's players know what that's like. The Red Sox were hailed as champions after winning the 2007 World Series then had to refocus.

"We spent the whole spring telling everybody to move on, so it was kind of a mixed message," manager Terry Francona said.

It will be hard to glean anything from Sunday night's game, though there's sure to be some hand-wringing by the losing team's rabid fan base. The Red Sox won their opener last year and were swept by the Los Angeles Angels in the AL division series. The Yankees started with a loss and finished with their 27th World Series title.

"Opening Night is special regardless of who you're playing," Francona said. "I'm sure there will be a little extra anticipation. I think we just need to win, regardless of who we play."

Boston's Josh Beckett and New York's CC Sabathia will make their second consecutive opening-day starts in what is expected to be unseasonably warm weather.

Last year's Red Sox opener was rained out, but Beckett sparkled in a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay the next day in Boston, allowing one run and two hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Sabathia's opener? Not quite the same.

He looked nothing like the pitcher the Yankees expected when they signed him before the season to a $161 million, seven-year contract. The left-hander allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings with five walks and two wild pitches in a 10-5 loss at Baltimore. He had no strikeouts for the first time since July 25, 2005, at Oakland.

When the season ended, though, he was 19-8 with a 3.37 ERA.

"CC's personality is perfect," Yankees captain Derek Jeter said. "He doesn't get fazed by much. He wants to pitch."

The game originally was scheduled for Monday before being switched, giving the spotlight to teams which have won three of the last six World Series — an attractive matchup for television viewers.

"Opening day, there's always a certain amount of anxiety to go along with the excitement," Francona said. "When's the first pitch? 8:09? That's a long day. There's no way I'm going to go to the ballpark later because it's a later (start). It just doesn't work that way. Get there early and do a lot of sitting around."

The Yankees made the big moves in free agency before last season, adding Sabathia, Teixeira and right-hander A.J. Burnett. The Red Sox nabbed the big name before this season by signing John Lackey, the top starter with the Angels but the No. 3 behind Beckett and lefty Jon Lester with Boston.

How is Beckett looking?

"Good, driven," Francona said. "He's ready to go."

The Yankees let World Series MVP Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon leave as free agents over the winter and traded Melky Cabrera. They picked up center fielder Curtis Granderson, designated hitter Nick Johnson and right-hander Javier Vazquez.

New York also is looking forward to a full year from Alex Rodriguez, who missed the first 28 games last year after hip surgery.

Boston lost left fielder Jason Bay in free agency but upgraded its defense by signing Gold Glovers Mike Cameron to play center and Adrian Beltre for third base. Marco Scutaro takes over at shortstop for Alex Gonzalez.

"I've played the Yankees before," Cameron said. "It's built up more by (the media) than the players. For us, it's always big. Playing here every day is big. I'm not going to try and make it any bigger than it is.

"It's good to see how you match up. They've got a lot of new players. We have a few new players."

The Yankees also take it for what it is, just the first of 162 regular-season games.

"The motivation is simple," Jeter said. "You want to win."

This will be the fourth time in 26 years that the rivals have met in the opener. New York won the last two in 1992 and 2005, both in Yankee Stadium. Boston won at Fenway Park in 1985 and is opening the season at home for just the third time since 1996.

"Going there is always special," said Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, looking forward to his 16th opening day. "It's fun. The fans make it fun. The atmosphere is always great. The reason why it's so great is the excitement when you walk out of that dugout, the buzz. It doesn't get old."

Pettitte is scheduled to face Lackey in Wednesday's finale of the three-game series. Lester goes against Burnett on Tuesday.

Why? For posting my opinon in a baseball thread? like everyone else can? i didnt hurt anyone or personally attack anyone. ok i take a self imposed "blame" for posting my opinon, some people need to get over themselves. there are different breeds of fans, some more, some less passionate than others, thats perfectly fine, i dont condemn people for the way they are as a fan, nor should you.

i may joke around, as do alot of others, but i also post good baseball articles and talk as well, as do others

If the mods think a simple post about what i think and what is common knowledge of what yankees fans call fenway, then i will retract the post. happy? big baby . lol. you still owe me 2 boustans and a Guiness! ha!

Fine leather has Red Sox looking awfully good

A year ago, even before the first game of the 2009 season was played, manager Terry Francona knew that the team defense was not going to be something to brag about.

One year later, with the defense and the pitching both boosted and each feeding off the other, he may have a chance to boast once in awhile.

``That's our hope - every time we're playing well, we're pitching and catching the ball,'' said Francona during spring training. ``It's tough when you're sloppy to reel off good streaks. This team has a chance to be very good.''

The changes were major and not too subtle, made to correct the most glaring flaws from 2009, when the team saved the second fewest runs, according to John Dewan's Runs Saved statistic, of any team in baseball.

The problems were at third base, left field and shortstop primarily, so the club went to work to fix them.

Despite his often spectacular diving catches, center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury's UZR ratings were well below average, reflecting his initial poor reads on balls, especially those hit in front of him. Moving him to left field to replace Jason Bay was a decision that could only be made if the club could find a very good center fielder, and that is where Mike Cameron came in. The 37-year-old three-time Gold-Glove winner was a free agent and the Red Sox saw an opportunity to put Ellsbury's speed and still-learning defensive skill set to work by moving him to left and planting the still-more-than-capable Cameron in center field.

In the infield, the club has been trying for two years to find a way to improve defense at third base, where Mike Lowell's hip injury has severely restricted his range and mobility. They found the answer late in the offseason, when they agreed to a one-year deal with an option for arguably the best third baseman in the game now, Adrian Beltre.

Possessing superlative instincts, footwork, glove-work and throwing arm, Beltre is the closest thing the Red Sox have to a superstar defensive player. The upgrade over Lowell should be huge and not take long to emerge, with Beltre gobbling up nearly everything coming his way.

Shortstop, the positional black hole for the Red Sox since 2004, was filled by Marco Scutaro, another UZR-plus defender who is being asked to do what sounds so simple but obviously is not: Get to the ball, field it and make a quick and accurate throw.

Those three additions, with the one positional change by Ellsbury, should only complement the run-prevention emphasis that begins with pitching.

``It should help a lot,'' said Francona. ``I know guys still have to pitch but when you're throwing fastballs down and you're getting rewarded for it, it's big. Every pitcher goes through it, they're nibbling, they're not throwing strikes. If they know they can throw the ball over the plate, something good is going to happen.''

There was nothing special about the Red Sox' defense last year.

By paying special attention to it over this past winter, the Red Sox are poised to reap big dividends.

Said Rays manager Joe Maddon: ``Overall, they've really put a lot of emphasis on defense and that's going to show in their performance this year.''

Looks like they agree with you Rumples...up to a point.

Cheers,

Merlot

Well I thought that's what we tried to do this year...somehow when you answer yes to that box that says you are an adult and over 18 I guess it does not mean you have to act like it.
I personally welcome all participation, WITH humor and fun (hell ask anyone who knows me I am a fun kinda person and can cut up with the best of them)... But sarcasm and needless insulting are not required.

Merlot you are right - ignoring the comments is best. Kinda what I said in a post I made somewhere about the power of "IGNORE".

Let's have fun!

For a guy who has stated he "taught" EB how to have sensible and intelligent debates, aka "agreeing with me and doing it my way", it comes as no surprise that you cant handle a little exchange with humor once and awhile, but would rather claim "silence" and "ignore" . dude i could debate you up and down "your way" til your cows come home but frankly that way is boring to me. i like a little humor as this is not college, but a internet board.

there was nothing wrong with my post, it was perfectly timed and insulted no member, didnt attack any member or harm anyone, if it was a joke against the Yankees, no one would of complained, so grow the hell up, speaking of babies. (rolls eyes smiley) geesh

You 3 are your own worst enemy, you could of said "nice one",(with one of jmans famous smiley's) (lol, sorry jman, everytime i think of a smiley i think of you lobbying to get REAL SMILEYS!) or "haha funny" or said nothing at all and moved on, BUT NO, you choose to make a big deal about it, and drag it on and on to make me look like the bad guy, well ya know what? i think the Yankees fans in here got a smile out of it and id bet to say most non yankee, non red sox fans did as well, and if they didnt, so what, it was a response to jmans "americas favorite ballpark" comment, and thats all,. get over yourselves.

I post alot of articles and talk about normal baseball things alot also, so if a little comedy that does not hurt anyone (except maybe your red sox egos it appears) once and awhile is wrong, sue me!

I have got my point across in a very calm and rational response out of respect for everyone including the Mods, so can we now move on? jman go ahead and post a pic of Yankees Stadium with a big rodent coming out of it and i promise i will give ya a big "nice job" with the biggest smiley guy you have ever seen! ha!

PS, to yankees fans in general, not just on here, jmans reference to fenway as americas ballpark was Ftard to us, (not a big deal but still a ftard comment, in a funny type of way, like saying with a laugh and a smile, "that F'tard") but not to redsox fans, just like my picture was appropriate to Yanks fans around the world, but it was ftard to redsox fans. if this is the case, half the things sox fans say are ftard to us and the same goes for what yanks fans say is ftard to you. so this thread will have ftardisms if anyone brags in other words , about a win, a player, about the team, etc.... OK, MOVING ON!

Iggy,

First thank you for stating your case. It s plainly obvious that your definition of f'tard is clearly different than the rest of the peoples who have posted here. I point out the major difference later in my comments.

Thanks - I take the first comment I quoted from you here as a complement.

Second comment - what I said was merely repeating the way the Fenway announcer prefaces the ballpark before every game...and it's "America's Most Beloved Ballpark" It was not and f'tard; simply a common reference to the ballpark. You see to make it an f'tard I would have had to put down or level an insult at Yankee stadium...And in my comments, I did not denigrate "the House that Ruth built" or say anything bad about Yankee stadium. Lord know I have had plenty of opportunities, but I will not go there with you. That is the f'tard difference my friend.

M, SK, R - sorry but to me just because the bully wants to stand on the mountain and scream louder, doe not make him right. I simply could not stay quite.

This will be my last comment relative to something other than baseball on this thread...hopefully we still have a thread.

Iggy, here's an idea - why don't you start a rivalry bashing thread and then those who want to poke sticks in each others eyes can go there and do so.

Have fun.

Jman

i accept your apology Jman....nicely done my friend. although we will never agree about what constitutes a F'tard. we are all alike as humans, but when it comes to red sox / yankees, we will NEVER be alike, and thats a good thing, trust me, as i am sure you would agree, lol

And i am not starting a bashing thread, i didnt bash, i stated my opinon just as you did, i like to add some humor from time to time, and as others have pm'ed me, thay appreciate it also, so when it is appropriate from time to time, i will, and just do like rumples and ignore it, lol, if it bothers you or simply give me one back. it was a harmless lil poke just like your "americas fav. ballpark" was (excuse me but i have never watched the red sox network , i always watch on YES Network, so had zero idea)

Anyways unless someone wants to keep this going, we are done here, and as the mods have asked, we have policed ourselves very well... do you ever get the feeling there is alot of testosterone on a escort review board? (insert one of jmans ROFLOL smileys here in Yankees Pinstripes) (hey that just gave me an idea, lol)

Heres to a good game tonight and a GREAT 2010 MLB SEASON!

The baseball season has finally arrived.

Let's play ball I say, are you ready to watch some good old fashioned ass kicking lgna69xxx?(tonight).

Joe.t's prediction for the East

1. Yankees.
2. Devil Rays.
3. Red Sox.
4. Orioles.
5. Blue Jays.

I'm also picking the Yankees over the Dodgers in the World Series.

My MVP pick will be Alex Rodrigues, I predict him to smash over 50 HR if he stays healthy in what will most likely be his last "Great" season in a superb career

My Cy Young pick will be CC Sabathia who should top last years 19 win performance with 22 wins this year.

PS- rumples(you to Merlot) I am advising you as a friend, stay from watching baseball this year, you know how emotional you guys get when your team fails miserably.

I agree with your predictions except i am thinking the jays might surprise a few people and play better than what most think... maybe even take third behind the Rays! HAHA!

GHG was right! LOL.

Great comeback tonight for the good guys! Showed a ton of heart after an awful outing by Beckett and the shaky bullpen. Not really a question around their offense tonight.

Hello SK,

I heard about what a terrible batting average most of the Red Sox in this lineup had against Sabathia. Well, not so tonight. Now who said the Red Sox couldn't produce offense? Not me...LOL! Sloppy, but it's a win. I'm sure everyone here enjoyed the game. Nice also to see that some things never change...lol.

As I've been telling you all along, K, Beltre-Cameron-Scutaro is a huge upgrade from Kotsay-Varitek-Green. With those three at the bottom of the order and MVP Youkilis in the middle, this team will score plenty of runs.

What I find hard to believe is that a team with a $210 M budget has the corpse of Chan Ho Park in their bullpen.
