Mike Babcock wants struggling Red Wings to 'focus on the process'
Mike Babcock paused on his way to his post-practice run to quickly address the media this afternoon. Mired in an 0-5-1 stretch after Thursday's 4-1 loss to Calgary, the Detroit Red Wings' coach didn't see what else he could say.
"What can I tell you that's new between yesterday and now?" he said, laughing. "OK, how about this: I'm a big believer that if you do good things, good things happen. I think, over time, that's the case. We lost six games in a row, I guess, the year we won the Cup (in 2008), but in saying that, I've never had a team that played this way and lost. So we've just got to stick with it.
"The other thing is I'm a big believer that you focus on the process. You don't win by focusing on winning. You win by focusing on the process, being good on the forecheck, being good in your own zone, being diligent and going about your own business. If you're a scorer and you're not scoring and you focus on scoring, you ain't going to score. Focus on getting in the right spot. Focus on taking the body. Focus on getting to the net. Focus on shooting the puck. Do the little things right, and everything looks after itself."
Everyone practiced today except forward Patrick Eaves, who is day-to-day with a sore back. Pavel Datsyuk was with Todd Bertuzzi and Danny Cleary, while Henrik Zetterberg was with Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen. Jiri Hudler was dropped to the third line, with Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader. Cory Emmerton centered Drew Miller and Tomas Holmstrom.
Every big-minute forward on the team is struggling right now. The Wings have just six goals the past six games, an unbelievably anemic pace for a team with such gifted offensive players.
"We just have to do what we're supposed to do and trust each other," Zetterberg said, repeating what has been mentioned after pretty much every loss. "If we do the right things, there's a good chance we'll win games."
