As incredible as it might seem ..., the Leafs are actually in worse shape points-wise than they were after 33 games in the historically inept 2009-10 campaign.

Sitting in 28th place with 28 points, the Leafs have three points fewer than they did at the same point in that frustrating season, a fifth consecutive year outside of the playoffs.[/SIZE][/I]

Yet some Leaf-loving imbeciles persist in saying that their team is "going in the right direction." These imbeciles must have spent several months drinking KOOLAID with Brian Burke!

Cheer up Maple Leafs: 2010 is coming to an end and in 2011, as usual, you will be on the golf course weeks or even months before almost every other team in the NHL.

It was very wise of you to book those tee times before the start of the current hockey season, secure in the knowledge that you would once again be among the league's doormats and not have to worry about wasting precious golf time in the playoffs.

Don't forget to book early again for NEXT season, since that will be a write-off also thanks to Burkie trading away your future for Little Phil.

And SPEAKING of the Invisible Man, does he also fire blanks on the greens?

No quick fix for Leafs’ failed game plan

The Accelerated Rebuild Theory has been debunked.

The standings don’t lie.

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke’s adamant belief there was a shortcut to respectability in the “new” NHL has been proven to be incorrect.

a Maple Leafs team that has won 13 of 36 games this season and will miss post-season play for a sixth straight season, it’s third spring out of the Stanley Cup tournament with Burke in charge

Bleep Year for Leafs

For the Maple Leafs, the less said about 2010, the better.

The calendar year came to a merciful end Thursday at the Air Canada Centre, the first half spent far out of the playoff race, the past two months digging a hole that will make it awfully hard to qualify in 2011.

Defensive Duds: Maple Leafs Blue Liners Deserve Some Blame For Offensive Woes

Care to guess at the only NHL team not to have at least one defenseman with more than one goal this season?

Here's a hint: their fans throw other objects on the ice that you usually lather in maple syrup.

That's right, your Toronto Maple Leafs. The only team in the NHL not to have a defender with more than one goal.

LAS VEGAS ODDSMAKERS UNFAZED BY TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS ADDITION OF PHIL KESSEL

If you need further proof that the Bruins got the better end of the Phil Kessel deal, look no further.

So, the Toronto Maple Leafs gave up two first round draft choices and a second round draft choice for a player who is expected to win them MAYBE 2 more games this year compared to last year. WOW.

I believe there is an error in the equation.

It should actually read: Toronto Maple Leafs plus Phil (Invisible Man) Kessel suck even more.

Aw gee, hard luck for the Leafs as their amazing win streak ended (as usual) at ONE game. They're still in 27th overall and have both the Islanders and the Oilers breathing down their necks. Good shot at 29th again this year! (Sadly, the Devils appear to have 30th locked up unless they can soon have a turnaround.)

Thrashers are the team of Brian Burke’s dreams

Every time the Toronto Maple Leafs make a trade or a signing, general manager Brian Burke and head coach Ron Wilson start talking about how the team is getting closer to how they envisioned it. Which is to say, big, tough and competitive.

Of course, if you have watched the Leafs much this season, you would probably agree that they are not any of those things.

Is Leafs GM's job safe?

going on three years later, like the Second Coming, the dawning of that better Burkian Era has yet to arrive.

he could bring Francois Beauchemin and Mike Komisarek for too-many millions and believe them to be the Leafs' defence of the future. A real steal. For Francois and Mike.

This team has Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf and it is now playing with a worse record than it had last year. A worse record than before Burke began throwing caution and Nik Antropov to the winds

BIG BUCKS BLUELINE NOT MONEY WELL SPENT

At the beginning of the season, the Maple Leafs organization considered the depth and quality of their defense to be one of the main reasons for showing optimism that the team would be improved over their 29th place finish in 2009-10. GM Brian Burke stated that successful teams required at least eight blueliners to get through the rigors of the NHL season and to that end, he allocated more of the $59.4 Million salary cap towards his defense than any other club. Burke stated that the group assembled could be amongst the league’s best, but it now appears that was a miscalculation and a colossal misappropriation of financial resources.

With the season nearly halfway over with, Toronto is essentially in the same place they were 12 months ago, wallowing at the bottom of the NHL standings, struggling with special teams, offensive production and defensive giveaways.

Great article!

Best line:
Toronto’s fifth and six guys are Mike Komisarek, who you might go so far as to call a massive bust...

Other terrific lines: Of course, if you have watched the Leafs much this season, you would probably agree that they are not any of those things.

And the one about Kessel being prone to disappear. (Well, what do you expect from The Invisible Man?)

All true. There is no doubt that Burke is the most overrated GM in hockey, as well as one of the absolute worst.

Frustration Mounting in Leaf Land

The Leafs are three games away from the halfway mark of the season (they’ll play Game 41 at Los Angeles Monday night) and are no further ahead than they were a year ago at this time.

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=3

This excellent comment deserves to be recorded here for posterity:

Burke has no plan… his intentions, like every dough-head GM that comes here, is to try a quick fix; hopefully catch lightning in a bottle, get into the playoffs, and see what happens from there. Burke (and this is a massive understatement) has been a huge disappointment. All the promises, the ideas… everything has backfired on this guy. Who gave him the authority to trade our future away as his first order of business? Given our pathetic history with drafting and developing, how on earth could anyone in the Leaf organization (the higher ups) allow him to make that trade for Kessel? Did he not know the history here? He grossly overvalued Kessel’s talent, and is also repeating Leaf lore by ruining a young talent’s confidence like Kadri. Burke likes the mediocre players. He brought in Komisarek (stinks), Beauchemin (stinks), Bozak (stinks), Kessel (stinks). If he gives up another lottery pick to the Bruins, he must be relieved of his duties; there is no other way. Two lottery picks and a second-rounder for KESSEL? Unacceptable. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Brian.
