Struggling Leafs doubtful to make playoffs

he said in early October. "It's our goal and our intention to participate in the playoffs."

As 2011 starts off, Burke's second full season as the club's boss, the Leafs don't appear likely to be making a post-season appearance. The last time Leafs fans enjoyed that thrill was seven years ago.

It's lucky that some Leaf-lovers keep reminding us that their team is "going in the right direction." Otherwise we might mistakenly believe that their latest embarrassment, a 7-0 blowout by the New York Rangers - was a sign that the team is going further into the depths of Hell.

Thems the facts, jack! <--- I think some not so wise person said something to this effect before.

You're right as usual SK and I think that "not so wise person" knows even less about hockey than he does about football and baseball...if that's possible!

The NHL's first-half disappointments

PHIL KESSEL/DION PHANEUF, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS -

After completing its fifth straight season out of the playoffs last spring, expectations in Toronto could be at an all-time low and yet the Leafs have still found a way to disappoint.

Kessel and Phaneuf are both high-profile players brought to Toronto during GM Brian Burke's reclamation project and the duo is quickly becoming the face of failure in Toronto.

Dion Phaneuf: Void of Impact

This season has been void of any inspirational quotes from Phaneuf and his on-ice performance has been mediocre at best

it is very hard to quantify what he does on the ice that is making an impact on the team's performance.

Case in point, on a team that is desperate for goals, Phaneuf has managed just one goal on the season, a feat he accomplished on December 14thagainst the Edmonton Oilers.

Phaneuf’s eight points in 28 games equates to a paltry 0.28 points per game, a far cry from the 0.40 points per game he was averaging with the Flames prior to joining the Buds. It's an even bigger gap when you consider his career high of 60 points in 82 games with the Flames during the 2007-2008 campaign, which equates to 0.69 points per game.
The reality is, through 54 games with the Maple Leafs, Phaneuf has just three goals and a total of 18 points. That equates to 0.33 points per game, which just isn’t good enough for a player that carries a cap hit of $6.5 million.

Worse yet, for a player that averages 3:30 of power-play time per game, Phaneuf has yet to score a power-play marker, and has no goals and just four assists on the PP this season.

WHERE HAVE THINGS GONE RIGHT???

With over half the season under their belt, it is painfully apparent that even the areas where GM Brian Burke thought his team was improved have failed miserably.

How could any team ever hope to do well when it has two gigantic stiffs like Komisarek and Phaneuf playing defence?

:D

"If the security at Air Canada Centre can remove a fan for throwing waffles on the ice during a game, what should fans do when Brian Burke and Ron Wilson keep putting garbage on the ice every night?"

I wonder if every country has something like the Leafs, who do double duty as 1. Canada's National Embarrassment and 2. Canada's National Laughingstock.

Dion Phaneuf is a has-been and a $6.5 million stiff. As usual Burkie blew it. He'd be better off spending the 6 and a half million on waffles - although considering how enormous he's getting, maybe Burkie HAS spent 6 and a half million on waffles!

THANK YOU BURKIE !!!

1. Canada's National Embarrassment and 2. Canada's National Laughingstock.

Good post as always Joel however I must correct you.

As of June 9, 2010 you can drop the words Canada's and National and simply replace them with the word Hockey's.
