Jon Stewart Returns to Take Down Trump and the GOP: ‘I See Your Bullshit’

On the day Roger Ailes resigned and Donald Trump accepted the GOP nomination, Jon Stewart returned to what he does best: ripping Republicans and Fox News.

by Matt Wilstein

Today, Roger Ailes resigned as chairman of Fox News after scathing accusations of sexual harassment emerged and Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican presidential nomination. Those are the kinds of stories with which Jon Stewart would have had a field day back when he was hosting The Daily Show. Sadly, he’s no longer around to tell us how he feels about the news. Or is he?

Following his surprise appearance on The Late Show earlier this week to help usher The Colbert Report’s “Stephen Colbert” back into our hearts, Stewart showed up once again Thursday night to deliver an old-school Daily Show-style takedown of the Fox News empire that helped make Donald Trump the Republican presidential nominee.

“I just want to say that, although I spent well over a decade making fun of his network and him and the damage I think he did to the world, the news of this man losing his job gives me no pleasure,” Stephen Colbert said, before asking the camera to cut away so he could laugh with joy. “If only there was someone I could share this lack of pleasure with.”

At that point, a bearded, T-shirt-wearing Stewart appeared beside Colbert. “I was wondering if I could just maybe talk about the election for a little bit,” he said, asking the Late Show host to step aside so he could take over. After strapping on a jacket and clip-on tie, he seemed to finally feel back at home delivering the type of scathing political commentary we haven’t heard from Trevor Noah or Colbert since Stewart entered retirement last year.

Starting with the RNC, Stewart said, “The Republicans appear to have a very clear plan for America. One, jail your political opponent. Two, inject Rudy Giuliani with a speedball-and-Red Bull enema, and, three, spend the rest of the time scaring the holy bejesus out of everybody.”

But instead of that, Stewart said he wanted to focus on the “contortions many conservatives will have to do to embrace Donald J. Trump, a man who clearly embodies all the things that they have said for years that they have hated about Barack Obama.” After playing a series of Fox News pundits ripping the Democratic president, he said, “A ‘thin-skinned narcissist’ with ‘no government experience?’ Yes, that sounds exactly like Barack Obama.”

To trace the journey of how the conservative media have been and will continue to “justify” the choice that Republicans have made, Stewart homed in on a single target: Fox News host Sean Hannity, whom he referred to as “Lumpy.”

While Hannity thought Obama was “the most divisive president in American history,” he has no problem with Trump calling Mexican immigrants “rapists.” As Stewart added, “I’m not an expert on racial unity, but I do believe that some of our more vaunted historical leaders in that area did retweet white supremacists less than Trump.”

Hannity has also slammed Obama for using a teleprompter, something Trump now does regularly. When he examined how Hannity once criticized the way “elitist” Obama orders a burger, Stewart even managed to work in one of his classic Arby’s plugs. Hannity likes to call Trump a “blue-collar billionaire.”

“That’s not a thing,” Stewart deadpanned. “Trump does seem like the kind of guy you’d like to sit down and own a fleet of airplanes with.”

But more than anything else over the past eight years, Hannity and his Fox News friends have eviscerated Obama for not being Christian enough. Yet when the Pope questioned Trump’s Christianity, Hannity was outraged. “Yeah, who died and made that guy pope?” Stewart joked.

“Here’s where we are,” Stewart said, setting off on a rant that ranks up there with his greatest hits. “Either Lumpy and friends are lying about being bothered by thin-skinned, authoritarian, less-than-Christian readers-of-prompter being president, or they don’t care, as long as it’s their thin-skinned prompter authoritarian tyrant narcissist. You just want that person to give you your country back, because you feel that you are this country’s rightful owner. The only problem with that: This country isn’t yours. You don’t own it. It never was. There is no ‘real’ America. You don’t own it. You don’t own patriotism. You don’t own Christianity. You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice for military, police, and firefighters. Trust me!”

“I saw a lot of people on the convention floor with their ‘Blue Lives Matter’ rhetoric who either remained silent or actively fought against the 9/11 first responders’ bill reauthorization,” he continued. “So I see you, and I see your bullshit,” he added, triggering CBS’s censors.

After briefly quoting Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, Stewart finished by saying, “Those fighting to be included in the ideal of equality are not being divisive. Those fighting to keep those people out are. So, Lumpy, you and your friends have embraced Donald Trump. Clearly the ‘c’ next to your names don’t stand for constitutional or conservative, but cravenly convenient—”

Before Stewart could get out that last c-word, Colbert blew an air horn and told Stewart they were out of time. Instead of dropping the mic, Stewart dropped his tie on the desk.
He may be out of the game, but he’s lost none of his skill.

Trump also "would never beat the 16 other candidates and be on the ticket in November for the chance to become president of the united states of America either". Oops, care to try again buddy lol, you just might be the new jinx around here Mon Ami :pound:
Not if people go vote. Trump won't get the women vote. Trump won't get the black vote. Trump won't get the hispanic vote. He won't get the college/university-educated voters. He also won't get the LGBT group. You need those groups to win today.

The only vote that Trump is definitely getting is the middle-aged angry white man vote. Sure, he also gets 100% of the bigots and racists vote, but they are in a minority.

Trump won't get New York & New Jersey. He won't get California. He likely won't get Virginia once Tim Kaine gets the VP nod later today or tomorrow. Those are key states. I'd be very surprised if Trump got Ohio after insulting very popular Governor John Kasich and for any Republican to win the Presidency, Ohio has always been a must-win.

The money is on the Democrats. Next week's DNC should be great and will easily make the recent RNC look very amateurish in comparison.

p.s. Eric & Ivanka Trump won't even vote for The Donald.

Many Republicans would rather spoil their ballots than vote for Trump. He has insulted many people. This man has no diplomacy, no class and a vocabulary of a 5-year old kid.

As usual Doc Holliday is very perceptive. It is true that Trump is getting the angry white man vote... but we also need to remember that in the US (and somewhat in Canada these days) it is not only about who will or will not vote for someone, but also about who actually shows up to vote. That is to say, hispanic and black citizens may not like Trump, but they may not vote either. Remember that the rate of participation in US elections is abysmally low, around 60% if I recall correctly, or even less. So some of it is getting your vote out. If the participation rate among angry whites is high, and you throw in substantial minorities of other groups who are angry about Clintons, and you combine that with electoral college considerations, then a Trump victory is not impossible. Though still, of course, unlikely at this point. But who knows what crazy events will happen from now to November. At his speech, incidentally, Trump looked eerily like how Mussolini is often portrayed, with a curled upper-lip, smug, and self-satisfied--Il Duce! Not good, too close to fascist rhetoric for comfort. His misrepresentation of the facts is breath-taking. H. Clinton surely made some mistakes in judgement, but at least one gets the sense that she has a nuanced appreciation of public policy...

I don't think there's anything waiting for Hillary. All her enemies have done everything they can think of and whiffed. As for the god of ego, his university fiasco could come full circle. Why else do you think he attacked that judge so harshly.

Candidates gain immediately after conventions. Romney was said to gain a slight lead after his. What is definitely going to have a big effect is the debates. Trump without a teleprompter will be his absolute bombastic embarrassing self. His fans will love him no matter what. The rest of the big majority of other voters will be repulsed if he runs true to form. Insulting, childish, offensive, bigoted, gross. It's going to be interesting when the audience sees him next to Clinton demeaning her in every way his ugliness can produce.

And you forgot to mention the uneducated, naive, and fools also who probably will comprise the majority of the votes. The right historically always went after the uneducated and naive people as they are easy to manipulate.

The money is on the Democrats. Next week's DNC should be great and will easily make the recent RNC look very amateurish in comparison.

I am not too sure about that. Trump is no fool... He was a game show host working on TV and the one thing these guys are good at is to convince people to their ways and to manipulate. This was the power of Hitler he was able to convince the population of his ways and to spread propaganda. That alone is a skill and type of intelligence. I would not count Trump out he has a good chance to win.

I actually predicted that Trump could beat those 16 useless so-called 'candidates'.

I told many that Jeb Bush would never and could never win the primaries. Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon & George HW Bush could never win the GOP primaries today. I told many that "Little Marco" was a lightweight. I told many that Ted Cruz was a nut. I must admit that i was surprised he finished 2nd. I told the world that Ben Carson was a certified nut and.....black. No way a black guy gets the GOP nomination. Same with any woman....the GOP hates women.

So, mon ami should do the right thing and listen to his ami who understands politics and people better than he does and realize that THERE'S NO FUCKING WAY DONALD TRUMP WILL EVER BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Save your fingers my friend, the only Trump supporter who took you seriously in this thread is no longer posting. Love ya my brother and yes the witch will probably win but stranger things have happened. Btw this thread is quite the conversation piece behind the scenes these days, many Trump supporters (and believe it or not, a couple killery supporters) in this community won't post because and I quote from one of them "I won't lower myself to debating with the silly misinformed few acting like children, always spouting off the same lame excuses over and over" You know some of these posters, they include some sexy and popular sp's as well ;). It's ok Mon Ami, I told them you're a great guy nonetheless lol. Go Leafs Go! On that we'll always agree my friend :)

Trump Attacking Cruz.

Now that he has the nomination Trump should be going after Clinton. FIRST MOVE: attack Ted Cruz. That's bad enough when he's supposed to be uniting instead of dividing. Trump went back to the kooky theory that Cruz and his family was somehow connected to the Kennedy Assassination. Trump needs Conservatives not just the Tea Party type yet he goes back to making strange accusations that push away Conservatives and make him look NUTS....AGAIN.

About his acceptance speech. "I ALONE CAN FIX THIS". It says I don't need anyone else. It says no one is a good as him. It says stay out of my way. It says He will run everything. It says dictator. It says Hail Caesar!

Brexit had far worse odds and look what happened.

The brits are just now realizing their stupidity. If you look at the news now odds look they will enter a recession soon, consequence of the brexit.

What I would like in democracy is to remove the right of vote to retired people. It's massively the retired old snub who decided the brexit at the expense of the young generation that wanted to build their future in the european union. Retired people vote with their anger and frustration, not with their head.

Cheers,

That`s a dumb thing to imply about retired people...how would it sound if you substituted
black or gay for retired.
It would serve you right if your grandparents cut you off from their will....lol

Cheers,

I agree it was a poor idea but they did me a favor. Before Brexit the Euro was 1.1 to the U.S. dollar. Now it's the opposite. U.S. 1.1 to the Euro. If that holds for 6 months it will be some icing on my plans to visit Europe within that time.

Retired people vote with their anger and frustration, not with their head.

Cheers,

So remove any group that doesn't see it the way you favor???

Anger and frustration is the overriding motive for Trump voters too.
