'Canes or Devils?

I can't believe the Habs lost 4 straight, shame on them for scoring a total of 5 goals in the last 4 games, that's what happens when you run into a red hot goaltender like Ward, that's what the playoffs are all about. Unbelievable!

Wonder what will happen when the 'Canes face the other hottest goalie between the pipes, Brodeur? I know I'm late but I predict the Stanley Cup winner will come out of this series.

Brodeur is a stud goalie right up there with the best whereas Ward is a rookie goalie. I'm not sure whether Ward is the real deal or a flash in the pan.

BTW, aren't you going to root for San Jose with former Bruin, now Shark meister Joe Thornton in the lineup :p ??

I voted for the Sabres. They were my prediction when the playoffs started, even though i must admit i didn't think they'd beat Philly so easily. They have it all: lots of speed, balanced scoring, good defenders, very good goaltending.....and a good and respected coach.

Absolutely Picasso! I'd love to see Thornton get a cup but their goaltending is definitely suspect. The thing with Ward is he's hot now and may be able to continue that roll.

Boston Management Strikes Again!

Couple random thoughts

1. Is it any surprise that Big Joe had the year he did in San Jose while the Bruins went into the toilet? Keep in mind that I am/was a Boston fan (I strongly considered switching to the Habs after that stupid, stupid trade. There's only so much I could take after watching the B's torture me year after year).

2. The NHL playoffs are always tremendous. It really brings out the intensity among teams when they have to play each other six or seven times in a two week period. It gives you an idea of what it was like when the original six had to play each other all the time.

The Original Six once meant something but haven't for years now. Chicago last won the cup in 1961 and almost always ices a hopeless squad. Toronto is a freakin' joke - it last won the cup in 67 and it's gotten so bad that the fans (most of whom work for the freakin CBC or TSN) come in their pants if their losers even come close to making the playoffs. Boston last won in 72 and has the best talent in the NHL for trading away its good players. The Rangers won in 94 mostly thanks to Leetch and the Moose but that was their first win in half a century and they have rarely even made the playoffs since. Montreal had fluke wins (all good luck and Patrick Roy) in 86 and 93 but haven't really had a good team in a quarter century - this year's quick exit was no shock even though they actually played much better than expected. Only Detroit has done well in recent years but their best players have all left, retired or are about to retire. After round one of the playoffs not a single Original Six team remains - no surprise (plus, it's actually good for the game - spread the wealth a bit).

Montreal: following in the footsteps of the Leafs during the Ballard years had won twice in the past 22yrs or so.
Toronto: the last 20 games was welled played due to some good young talent, might have a great team in 3-5yrs if they keep their young players because they have one of the better farm system, but need to get ride of Lindros, Allison and Sundin to make some cap room, then maybe sign a good young player like Crosby or Ovechkin once their contracts are up

OK BDC I understand that you're a Leafs fan BUT c'mon how could you possibly say "Montreal: following in the footsteps of the Leafs"???

Montreal has 24 Stanley Cups - 24 my friend, 2 in the last 20 years

Toronto has 11 Stanley Cups - NONE in the last 40 years...

Montreal "follows" no one when it comes to hockey my friend.

Interesting fact for any non-hardcore hockey fans out there: The Montreal Canadiens have won more professional sports championships (24) than any other team in any sport anywhere in the world with exception to the NY Yankees (the hardest working team in baseball :D ) who have won the World Series 26 times.

Too many tears??

I was told that the St-Lawrence River went up a couple of inches over the past couple of days. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Habs being knocked out of the playoffs on Tuesday evening? :D

Hardest working team in baseball???
You mean the highest spending team.
The last 5 champinoships were bought by Steinbrenner.
Doesn't take no pride or hard work to win that way, just plenty of$$$$, and voilà!You got yourself a world serie!
They (the yankees) are a disgrace the way they buy players from less wealthy teams. With their payroll well over 200 millions, the highest in all 4 major sports leauge in NA.
It's about time MJB put their pants and imitate other major sports leauge and install a salary cap.
Championships will no longer come easy for steinbrenner.

Hey Cosmo,

I think I may have hit a nerve, don't worry my good man "the hardest working team in baseball" reference was not sincere, it was simply a little "poke" at a fellow hobbiest.

I personaly tend to agree with most of your comments Cosmo - except the Salary Cap which I don't like in any sport, but that is a topic for another day.

Hey!

Nobody has voted for Montreal since they got knocked out. Amazing!!!!!!! They had been leading the poll the day before they were eliminated in the first round.

19 votes for teams knocked out in 1st round. Very credible poll results, by the way.

Stanley Cup

EB:

As a die hard Habs fan, I can see that the Blue-Blanc-Rouge didn't have
the talent to win, BUT......you have to like the way the young players showed up to play, get crucial experience for next time.:p

My pick to win the Cup: NJ Devils

I like the Sens, (will they fold again?), and Buffalo could surprise (excellent balance and team play), but the Devils are hot, on a roll, with easily the best & most experienced playoff goalie in Brodeur...........:D
Goalies ofter determine the winner!

Or put it another way, 41/60 or slightly more than 2 out 3 voters picked teams that are still in the playoffs. For an escort review board, I'd say that's a pretty decent percentage. Those 11/40 votes for the Habs are what's referred as the home field discount factor. Haven't you ever heard of that :p ? At least the NY Rangers were not listed or even more votes (at least one anyway) would have gone for teams that got knocked off.

Why NHL Playoffs are the best in pro sports

1. The regular season doesn't matter

How many times has a #8 upset a #1?

2. The intensity

Nothing like playing the same team six or seven times over a two week period to truly develop animosity ("familiarity breeds contempt", as they say). That's what I was referring to in my previous post with the Original Six. When it was just Boston, Montreal, New York, Detroit, Chicago and Toronto, the same teams would play each other regularly (unlike, say, teams in different conferences that might only play each other twice in the same year during the regular season). Think about the great rivalry between Detroit and Colorado in the '90s. That started when Colorado upset Detroit in six games before going on to win their first Cup.

3. Overtime

Nothing like sudden death in the NHL playoffs.

I really haven't watched the NHL this past year but I have always loved the playoffs. Reminds me why I love the game in the first place.

The Habs have reached the finals 3 times since 1986(86-89-93)
To those who've said that they were lucky and didn't deserved winning those championships here are some facts;
The 86 line -up:Roy,Carbonneau,Gainey,Robinson,Lemieux,Chelios,B.Smith,Naslund,Walter,
Green,Richer,Svoboda...
At least 6 of them either already in or future Hall of Famers.(Roy,Carbo,Gainey,Robinson,Chelios,Smith)
Naslund was one of the best left winger of his era, being elected on either first or second all star teams on numerous occasions.
Richer had 2 50 goals seasons.
Claude Lemieux was on of the best play off players of all time along with John Tonelli,Joe Sakic,ect...
Walter,Svoboda,Green,Ludwig,McPhee,....not a bad team at all.
1989 was practically the same line-up,with Corson and Courtnall added.
1993;
Bellows,Damphousse,Muller,Leclair,Carbonneau,Roy,Savard,DesJardins,
Shneider...btw,this ''ordinary'' team finished with 103 points, not bad.
During the Serge Savard years(1983-95) the Habs had one of the best playoffs records second to the Oilers.
They only missed the playoffs once, in 95 and Savard was fired-one of the worst move Corey ever made.
Stanley Cups won since 1984:
Oilers,5
Detroit,3
Devils,3
Pittsburgh,2
Denver,2
Habs,2
Dallas,1
Calgary,1
Tampa,1
Rangers,1
Rest of the leauge,0
So only 3 teams have won more Cups than the Habs since 1984.
Not THAT bad!
