I would like to take credit for this song but i can't. My good friend Doc pointed this song out to me a while back, so he should get all the credit for this. It is one of the greatest love songs of all time, I now often have this song playing when an escort shows up to my room.

Walzing Matilda is not a love song. It is a song about a crippled Australian soldier returning from the battle of Galipoli. Matilda is Australian slang for a backpack and waltzing matilda means to go hiking and travelling, which he will not be able to do anymore. The Pogues made a version that you will usually hear on radio during Remembrance Day. Which brings me to another of my favorite band, The Pogues (short for Pogue Mahone, litterally ''kiss my ass'' in Irish) the most iconic Celtic rock band fronted by legendary Shane MacGowan.

You make a great point but i have made mad passionate love to many an escort and stripper with that song playing in the background. I guess the only explanation is, Slim Dusty was so talented he could make any song seem like a love song.

I knew about the back pack origin. Thanks for the soldier and Galipoli explanation.

No question EB both Zeppelin and The Who had great drummers...very unfortunate they both OD'd...and perhaps Bonham was the greatest drummer of all time...Bonham used the heaviest drum sticks (tree trunks) in the business and the sound reverberating from the cymbals was pure magic...

And the Doors led by Morrison and Manzarek were pure genius...a great combination of rock, blues and psychedelia!

I would agree with your assessment of John Bonham as the greatest rock drummer of all time and in your assessment of the Doors. It comes down to the Doors and Beach Boys as greatest American band of all time. I give the Doors the edge because I think their artistry was very unique and on a different level. Their music is far different and more original than many of the so called classic bands.

The other thing they had was Morrison whom I consider the most charismatic front man of any rock band outside of Jagger and he had a great voice for singing rock music. He is the classic rock band lead singer - embodies all qualities that a rock front man must possess.

Would be nice to have the lyrics to this masterpiece. Next time I'm with an escort, I want to play it and we can sing along..

Your wish is my command. Enjoy! :D

Waltzing Matilda

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,
Under the shade of a Coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boil,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boil
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

....................

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

.....................

Up rode the squatter mounted on his thorough-bred
Down came the troopers One Two Three
Whose that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me
Whose that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker-bag
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

......................

Up jumped the swagman sprang in to the billabong
You'll never catch me alive said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

Waltzing Matilda Waltzing Matilda
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

It's impossible to judge which or whom are the greatest bands and singers of all time. It depends which decades they peeked and what type of influence they had in music. The end result is that it comes to personal choices. Here are my selections:

Best music band: The Beatles. Before them, writing your own songs was never heard of. Paul McCartney and John Lennon changed all this. The Beatles also influenced & changed music like no other music group ever did. They not only influenced music, but fashion. When they peaked in the mid-to-late 60's, long hair had become cool and trendy. They also made some of the greatest albums of all time, including Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Rubber Soul & Revolver, among others.

Best male or female: Elvis Presley. He revolutionized music & he had style. He also not only influenced other musicians for decades to come, but also influenced fashion. Side burns and greasy hair was never as popular!

My personal favorite music group: The Eagles.

Other favorites: Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, KISS.

My personal favorite singer: Johnny Cash. No one comes close to the man in black in my mind.

Other notables: Michael Jackson, Marty Robbins and Hank Williams. Hank Williams wrote over 300 songs and died before the age of 30. Country music would not be what it is today had it not been for Hank Williams. I could have replaced Elvis in my selection witih Hank Williams.

Best drummer: Neil Peart (Rush).

Actually, I realized I made a mistake. The song from the Pogues is called ''And the band Played Waltzing Matilda'', which is not the same as the one in the video. Walzing Matilda is a traditionnal Australian song and in my song it is played by the band when the wounded soldiers return home.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lE-YjjZhwc

And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where my legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity

And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
Then turned all their faces away

But if you took a poll of oeople in the music business the Beatles would win by a significant landslide. They would also win in a poll of people in the 40-70 age group.

Are you sure about that? The Beatles split up in 1970 - 4 years BEFORE a 40 year old of today was even born (although admittedly it was a full 3 years AFTER the Leafs last won a Stanley Cup).

Incorrect. To cite perhaps the best example: Buddy Holly, who died in 1959, wrote his own songs. The Beatles (Words of Love) and the Stones(Not Fade Away) both covered him. The Beatles even took their name largely in tribute to Holly's band the Crickets.

I can understand saying that if one considers Frank Sinatra, The Supremes, Doris Day and the like

Performers writing their own songs, lyrics, music and arrangements. Lots during and before the beatles.
Paul Anka, Woody Guthrie, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Simon and Garfunkle, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones.

As for performers taking over the studio to use it as an instrument, the Beatles had their hand early in that. It made up for their lack of being in touch with young people's angst and the violence and turmoil of the times. The Rolling Stones and The Animals were good at that.

There are poles galore on who is the best, and we all agree to disagree on whoever it may be. It will always come to to personnel choice. Now look at this from another angle, who has influenced the most musicians? Lol, that would be another pole. It goes to Muddy Watters. :peace https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhAcIuj3o1Ehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRbHRaG7yao

I think you measure the importance of a band not by it's success, but by how much impact they had on other musicians.
After the Beatles, I'd say The Ramones. Never had big commercial success, but every contemporary rock musician will name them as a major influence.

Muddy Waters has influenced over 80 musicians or band. some of which are Led Zep, Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Stones, Bonnie Raitt...and the list goes on..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuwbKakPRRI

In building the case for Led Zeppelin, not only was John Bonham a consensus top 5 (and possibly greatest) rock drummer of all time, but Jimmy Page is also a consensus top 5 (#3 on Rolling Stone list) rock guitarist of all time- giving the band 2 guys who were top 5 all time at their respective instruments. I think the extended guitar solo on Ten Years Gone, starting at 2:30, is possibly Page's best work with Led Zeppelin:

I'd add Joe Walsh, Mark Knopfler, Alex Lifeson & the great Angus Young to that list. And of course, the legendary George Harrison.
