Fun With Math
The leafs have been outshot in 36 of their 45 games, exactly 80%. (Is that good?)
They have lost 10 of their last 15 games, 14 of their last 21, and 16 of their last 24. Everyone except the Corporal probably sees that each of those 3 stats equates to exactly 2/3. Neat! (Is it good to lose 2/3 of your games?)
The leafs have won 2 of their last 24 games in regulation time and 4 of their last 31 in regulation time. (Sorry, I realize the math is not as much fun in this stat.)
Quite recently, the leafs traded John-Michael Liles for Tim Gleason. Not wanting to trade just ONE player for ONE other player, Dave Nonis also gave the Canes another player AND a second round draft pick. By the way, Gleason has a bigger cap hit than Liles, and Nonis was probably thrilled at the opportunity to tie up more cap space. How's the trade working out so far? Well, in a head-on match between the 2 teams involved, Carolina humiliated the leafs 6-1. Liles had 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 points and was plus 2. Gleason had zero, zero, zero, and was minus one.
For much of the season, the only saving grace for the leafs has been the play of their goalies. It looks like that has now ended. "Tie Game" Bernier was bad in his last two starts, getting yanked in one and losing both. James Reimer played against the Canes and allowed 6 goals on 36 shots, for a dismal .833 save percentage.
In their last 3 games, the leafs have lost by scores of 7-1, 5-3, and 6-1 for a total of 18 (opponents) to 5 (leafs) in 3 games. (Is that good?) Not only do the leafs lose, they get blown away.
