Isn't it amazing that the Rays are paying $8 million or some ridiculous amount of money to James Loney so that Loney can play 1st Base for the Mets, which Loney has done competently, while the Rays have been unable to replace Loney at 1st Base and traded Steve Pearce who they had been playing at 1st after releasing Loney? I wonder how the Rays feel now, and how the Mets feel about getting a 280 average and 6 homers in one third of a season completely free of charge and fully paid by another team?

First save of the Betances Era as Yankees Closer last night. It will be the first of many. He has groomed for the job for 2.5 years and now he is ready to seize and run with it.

I'm not so certain of this. I find him very inconsistent at times. They never should have got rid of Andrew Miller, whom i consider the best there is in the game and whom they had control over for another few years. Sure, they got prospects for him. But in the end, they are still just prospects and they came from the Cleveland Indians' farm system, whom i've never been very high on.

With a win tonight vs. the Mets, the Yankees tie the Mets for best record in NYC and could possibly win the mythical NYC championship.

ARod not in the lineup as DH tonight vs. Bartolo Colon, the only pitcher older than ARod and aginst whom A-Rod has a .442 career batting average as well as a 3 homer game in 2005. Girardi was grilled about this benching of A-Rod at the pregame presser and was furious with the questions and basically said he did not know when or if he will play A-Rod again. Apart from a possible PH appearance, Yankees are not using him and they have a 24 man roster at this time. Pending the release of A-Rod anyway, which I think will happen soon. ARod may even demand it.

Sanchez at DH tonight, a 23 year old bat. Youth is being infused into the Yankees team and they are starting to shows signs of it.

Verlander Friday
Boyd Saturday
Sanchez Sunday

Sanchez has struggled but may have turned the corner a bit. Boyd is so so. JV is starting to be mentioned as a Cy Young candidate.

Mark Texeira now hitting .188.Why doesn't this bum retire?

Teixeira might have been MVP of the AL last year if he hadn't fractured his leg. He had 31 HRs and 79 RBIs in only 111 games last year, then missed the last two months. His slugging and on base percentages were at or above his career norms. His slugging was well above his career average.

This year he has had a succession of injuries and he can't shake the neck or knee injuries. His body isn't healing and is breaking down and he cannot sustain himself every day. He is doing an honorable thing by playing out his contract and not taking money for nothing. He could probably get another contract from someone as a strict DH, but the nagging injuries and especially the neck are not going away and he just got tired of being in the trainer's room all the time.

To me, Teixeira was an excellent two way player, a smart player and a man of integrity. I also never really saw him get ruffled. He had a funny exchange with Mets pitcher Hansel Robles the other night. Robles thought Teixeira was stealing signs from second base on him. Teixeira yelled back at Robles to change his signs if he thinks they are being stolen, while laughing. He doesn't take himself or anyone else too seriously. Also a smart guy off the field and will probably do well after baseball.

I've always respected Teixeira. He gives his all and he seems like a class act. Too bad about that uniform but his numbers could save him a place in the HOF. It's unfortunate his run of injuries will take him out of the game since he's only 36.

All respects to him.

I guess you missed when he wanted to charge the mound after he thought Matz hit him on purpose

I missed that one but I know Teixeira injured that same shin fouling a ball off it very recently and he must have been pissed that Matz hit him in the same spot where he had recently injured himself. I give him a pass on that one. I think he had just taken off the shin protector and Matz went for the shin.

Geeze - Looks like the Mets have 6 starters on the disabled list? Is that a record Smuler?

Noah Syndergaard is a good pitcher. The radio announcers said that he is horrible at holding a runner and Kinsler stole 2nd and 3rd to start the game and led to the first gift run. I guess the Mets do not care too much because Noah strokes out 11 per game.

BTW - Granderson was a fan favorite in Detroit.

He was also well liked with the Yankees. He has a very positive attitude, is a very regular kind of guy with no airs about him and I heard that Granderson was the only guy on the team who went out in the City, on the town, not wearing a disguise, because fans would not recognize him out of uniform.

The Mets arguably have the best young starting pitching staff in baseball..injuries this year have destoyed us

Imagine if we had Fulmer ?

I wish it was Granderson that retired today..can't wait til he's gone

Noah is horrible at holding runners..but not as bad as Lester

Totally ridiculous..The ball got away from Matz..it was obvious

Maybe but how do you think Teix felt about getting hit in the very area where he had fouled off a ball and had just taken off the shin protector? His shin area was likey sore and painful to begin with and likely provoked the strong reaction we observed. He was also dealing with the frustration of this string of injuries, and in a frail state of mind to begin with. I have noticed that Teixeira has a tendency, from both sides of the plate, to foul lots of pitches off his feet and lower legs, far more than most players (Derek Jeter used to be similar in this regard). Probably has something to do with his swing and the way he gets pitched. Anyway even if Matz let that ball get away, Teix has a right to be upset that if Matz chooses to pitch inside he have a little better control of his pitches.

When a guy throw 95+ sometimes it is good to be a little wild. It can actually help because guys are less likely to dig in. That is the reason for pitching inside. Ask Don Drysdale.
