Let's put it this way, Binnington's career peaked in game 7 of the 2019 Stanley Cup. He is mainly been trying to ride that performance, as best as he can, ever since.

I think we can all agree that Finland's goalies have not distinguished themselves in this tournament. Furthermore, Nashville has been very disappointed by the play of Saaros which has carried over into the 4 Nations Tournament. 11-23-6 with a .899 save % is not what Nashville was looking for this year. Finland hoped to get more out of him, but he sucked vs. Team USA.

And in Boston today booing of the Canadian anthem by American fans not happy with this display. Whole thing is stupid- it's a sports event - teams representing their countries- their leaders are not playing. HELLO!!!!!
Yesterday one of my American friends said the same thing. But then he added “But to be honest if i’d be Canadian i’d probably feel the same way you do & would be booing as loud as i could also!”

You know what’s stupid? Playing the national anthems at sporting events. The anthems make them political. You don’t see anthems being played prior to a rock concert, right? So since these games are sports entertainment why is this different?

I kind of agree with you. Binnington has given up at least one bad goal per game he’s played in. Not reassuring. Logan Thompson should have been named to this team but his former coach who’s one of the assistant coaches doesn’t like him so that’s why they supposedly picked Montembault instead. For me Thompson is currently the best Canadian goaltender in the business. Same thing with Schiefle who wasn’t picked because some of the braintrust heard he was a bad apple. Whether true or not he’s currently one of league’s top scorers.

The bottom line is that Carey Price or Martin Brodeur between the pipes against USA likely wouldn’t have a changed a thing. Canada only scored once. You rarely win games when you score only one goal.

It would be nice if both sides have all star goalies and tip top first lines, but the truth is Canada's top line is better than USA's, and USA's top goalie, and maybe their top 3 goalies, are better than Canada's. That's the way the talent pool has ended up for these teams right now.

The final will be played in Boston which is probably the best hockey city in the USA.

I pretty much agree with everything you said except Hockeytown USA (Detroit) may disagree that Boston is the best hockey city in the USA. But personally i agree with you on that.

As for Canada yes their goalie is worrisome since he tends to allowmat least one bad goal per game. Now it’s too late to put in Aidan Hill since he has yet to play & Canada has also only lost once in a very close game against the USA. But one thing that Canada has going for them is that they have the top 3 players in the world playing for them: McDavid, McKinnon & Makar. And when these three are on, they’re on!

One big thing that USA has to he worried about are their injury status: Matthews & McAvoy are banged up & both Tkachuk are hurt along with Quinn Hughes. But if i’m a betting man i firmly believe that most of them will play Thursday night. Not sure about Quinn Hughes, though. We’ll see. By the way this was a very well played & exciting game tonight between Sweden & the USA. The Swediah goalie was fantastic! Ottinger was shaky on the first goal but played very well afterwards. I’d say that Sweden has so much elite talent on the top 3 lines that it makes them pretty even with Canada & the USA. Viktor Hedman is still an elite defenceman, Rasmus Dahlin will likely become his heir apparent one day but Erik Karlsson’s best seasons are behind him. I find their goaltending similar to Canada’s.

Canada used to have the best goalies and the best forwards, now we only have the forwards... The goaltending side is disastrous. And thats the biggest fear for the final. I do hope by some miracle Canada manage to win tough. Would be a lot of fun !

Very true. But I’m surprised no one has really come up with an explanation for this. Of course it’s not that surprising tgat the Americans eventually caught up for several reasons: the much larger population, more American teams in various regions across the country, more tv exposure, NCAA hockey’s popularity, etc. But why have smaller countries also caught up in the goaltending department?

I think the biggest reason for this is that parents have been discouraging their kids from playing the goaltender position because it costs a fortune in equipment as the kid is growing up. Just having a kid playing hockey at the forward position already costs a lot. Just the other day my neighbor bought his 10 year old kid a new hockey stick which cost over $100. Just imagine if your kid played goalie & two years later he grew up a few inches & needs new equipment? Imagine how much more a goalie’s stick costs? So that’s a big reason why. The talent pool has shrunk considerably because parents can no longer to have their kids playing hockey if they’re goaltenders! I know people whose kids insisted on being goaltenders & they spent a fortune on goalie equipment. The masks & the gloves alone cost a fortune…and a year later the kids either stopped playing hockey or decided they hated playing goalie so they decided to play forward!

I once wanted to play goalie when i was a kid. I played one practice & absolutely fucking hated it! My dream of being the next Tony Esposito went down the drain so i set my sights on being the next Bobby Orr! Lol

One of my hockey insiders told me last night that he doubts Charlie MacAvoy will play in the championship game because he’s currently in a Boston hospital & people around the team are very secretive about the matter. His father in law Mike Sullivan who’s Team USA’s coach stated he couldn’t say more other than it was an upper body injury. But considering he went to the hospital yesterday & spent the night there it’s not looking good!

What really gives Boston the edge over Detroit is the presence of intense NCAA hockey teams- BU, BC (where many of the USHNDP players played at least a couple years), Northeastern, Harvard and the backbone of Hockey East. Detroit has none of this hotbed of NCAA hockey or the Beanpot Tournament which for many years has been the biggest college hockey tournament in the USA.

In college hockey Detroit is a big zero- they have nothing- nowhere near the same hockey landscape as in Boston which is a hub of Hockey East.

I think you can add the U.S. Hockey National Development Program, which has really advanced the careers of many players now. Their development of Junior USA hockey teams under the auspices of a national staff has really elevated the development and training of young American hockey talent. You look around the NHL and all these young American stars matriculated from this program. Goalies like Jake Oettinger, Joseph Woll, Jeremy Swayman, and Connor Hellebuyck all came through the program.
