North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticized officials over slow medicine deliveries and mobilized the military to respond to a surge in suspected COVID-19 infections, as his nation struggled to contain what it's referring to as a "fever" that has reportedly killed dozens and sickened nearly a million others in a span of three days.

Last week, North Korea acknowledged a COVID-19 outbreak for the first time and imposed a nationwide lockdown. Since then, the death toll has reached 50 and more than 1.2 million are feared sick.

That's a jump from last Friday, when six deaths were reported and 350,000 said to be ill.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - Before acknowledging its first domestic COVID-19 cases, North Korea spent 2 1/2 years rejecting outside offers of vaccines and steadfastly claiming that its superior socialist system was protecting its 26 million people from "a malicious virus" that had killed millions around the world.

Its surprise admission this week has left many outsiders wondering just how bad things really are, and there's rising worry that it could cause a major humanitarian crisis in a country with one of the world's worst public medical infrastructures.

Maybe yes?, but....
Kin Yung Un...

… Earlier in the pandemic, experts thought that immunity from vaccination or previous infection would forestall most reinfections.
The Omicron variant dashed those hopes. Unlike previous variants, Omicron and its many descendants seem to have evolved to partially dodge immunity. That leaves everyone — even those who have been vaccinated multiple times — vulnerable to multiple infections.
“If we manage it the way that we manage it now, then most people will get infected with it at least a couple of times a year,” said Kristian Andersen, a virologist at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego. “I would be very surprised if that’s not how it’s going to play out.”
NYT, Daily Covid Briefing 05/20/22

The question is why the vaccination game is still going on?

Personally, I accept the statistics that getting regular vaccines help generate additional antibodies. So I get boosters. You certainly don’t have to if you choose not to, but I think it makes sense, myself.

Something has caused the daily death rate to decline in the U.S. to about 300 a day even though the infection and spreading rate is still extremely high.

It is either a natural weakening of the virus, antibodies from previous infections, antibodies from vaccinations, or two of the three, or three of the three.

I think it is three of the three.

And we should extend a giant fuck you, thanks for nothing to the U.S. government on two fronts.
By advocating continuation of the vaccination game, you assume that even if the benefit of vaccination is declining it is still positive and there is no harm. There is however some evidence that vaccination actually decreases your chances to build COVID immunity:

North Korea said Friday that nearly 10 per cent of its 26 million people have fallen ill and 65 people have died amid its first COVID-19 outbreak, as outside experts question the validity of its reported fatalities and worry about a possible humanitarian crisis.

"It's true that there has been a hole in its 2½ years of pandemic fighting," said Kwak Gil Sup, head of One Korea Center, a website specializing in North Korea affairs. "But there is a saying that North Korea is 'a theatre state,' and I think they are massaging COVID-19 statistics."

Kwak said North Korea is likely partly using the outbreak as a propaganda tool to show that it is overcoming the pandemic with Kim's leadership.

In the budget plan released Tuesday, the province announced it will provide $20.5 million in funding over five years to set up 15 clinics for so-called “long COVID” patients, who number at least 9,000, according to a government estimate.

The 15 clinics will include five “reference centres” in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke, and 10 satellite clinics elsewhere in the province.
They will include physiotherapists, social workers, nurses, coordinators and administrative staff.

Symptoms of long COVID include fatigue, memory problems, shortness of breath, brain fog, headaches and muscle pain.
