The issue is what would you sugest to demonstrate our protest? The governement does not listen. It does not even listen to protests but it seem to be the only way to actually demonstrate concretely what its about. Am i in agreement with everything Max says? No. I am totally against his climate views for exemple. But concretely on a federal level he was the only one who step up trying to defend us. The convervative at times look like they wanted to help but are afraid to do so because they may loose other voters and ultimately they do nothing concrete beside a tiny line in the news here and there in support.

We are going in a direction that being unvacinated could mean not being able to buy food at the grocery store eventually. We could even be going a very dangerous route where governements try to force the vaccine on us. They already do but in a semi hidden way, but im talking litteraly this time. And unless a judge finally put his pants and says what should had been said long ago (that you can't force medicine on anyone) , then it could mean some of us will have to litteraly unplug completely. I’ll go on record saying that the vaccine is the biggest weapon that we have in the fight to get our hospitals under control. I’m double vaxxed and will get the booster when I’m eligible. But let’s be real: the vaccine is not the only way out of this pandemic. I’ve seen and heard way too many people stating that as a fact when it simply isn’t true.

We knew going into the vaccine rollout that there’s only a short period of time in which a vaccinated individual can’t get infected, but otherwise vaccinated people very much do contribute to the spread of the virus. This vaccine helps flatten the curve, but definitely doesn’t stop the spread. If anything, it makes the spread more hidden and less controlled.

And on top of that, we know that all bets are off once variants emerge. So even if we were 100% vaccinated across the country, what good will it be if our borders aren’t completely sealed? Variants will no doubt get into the country and spread.

The most important thing should have always been to protect the most vulnerable. Vaccination is a great tool to do exactly that, but let’s not act like it isn’t risk free. Especially when we’re talking about multiple doses of sometimes different products and technologies that were rushed to market by companies in a competitive industry. The risk isn’t in the science. It’s downstream from the genius’s that pioneer this research.

Vaccination is still the path that I personally choose, but we will never get the entire country to buy in on a bad sales pitch. And I feel pretty uncomfortable that our leaders are getting aggressive about forcing a solution with serious holes in it.

An American friend of mine, commenting on this news story, said "it's a Banana Republic they have up there."
This law would quickly be shot down in the United States, if any state attempted it, due to the equal protection clause of the United States constitution. The law discriminates between those who have been vaccinated and have been hospitalized, and the unvaccinated who have been hospitalized. The tax is based on the theory that the unvaccinated are burdening the health system and should pay for that burdening. But the hospitalized vaccinated who are also burdening the healthy system do not have to pay. That is discrimination. So there is no way a law like this would happen in the USA.

My guess is that your Quebec politicians feel that 90% of the electorate and the judicial system will back them, so they do not give a fuck about the legal analysis.

Got a question for you: what does hospitalization for COVID mean? Isn't it a whole spectrum? For example the unvaccinated could be near death's door with oxygen saturation near 70+ but the vaccinated would just have an 39C temperature and breathing normally with a nasal cannula. Personally I've been hospitalized before (not for covid) and I wasn't in any great pain or discomfort.

No, I am saying such a law by any State would be subject to successful attack as unlawful/unconstitutional discrimination. As for linchpin technologies, many experts highlight another innovation that was crucial for mRNA vaccines — one that has nothing to do with the mRNA. It is the tiny fat bubbles known as lipid nanoparticles, or LNPs, that protect the mRNA and shuttle it into cells.

This technology comes from the laboratory of Pieter Cullis, a biochemist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and several companies that he founded or led. Beginning in the late 1990s, they pioneered LNPs for delivering strands of nucleic acids that silence gene activity. One such treatment, patisiran, is now approved for a rare inherited disease.

After that gene-silencing therapy began to show promise in clinical trials, in 2012, two of Cullis’s companies pivoted to explore opportunities for the LNP delivery system in mRNA-based medicines. Acuitas Therapeutics in Vancouver, for example, led by chief executive Thomas Madden, forged partnerships with Weissman’s group at UPenn and with several mRNA companies to test different mRNA–LNP formulations. One of these can now be found in the COVID-19 vaccines from BioNTech and CureVac. Moderna’s LNP concoction is not much different.

The nanoparticles have a mixture of four fatty molecules: three contribute to structure and stability; the fourth, called an ionizable lipid, is key to the LNP’s success. This substance is positively charged under laboratory conditions, which offers similar advantages to the liposomes that Felgner developed and Malone tested in the late 1980s. But the ionizable lipids advanced by Cullis and his commercial partners convert to a neutral charge under physiological conditions such as those in the bloodstream, which limits the toxic effects on the body.

What’s more, the four-lipid cocktail allows the product to be stored for longer on the pharmacy shelf and to maintain its stability inside the body, says Ian MacLachlan, a former executive at several Cullis-linked ventures. “It’s the whole kit and caboodle that leads to the pharmacology we have now,” he says.

By the mid-2000s, a new way to mix and manufacture these nanoparticles had been devised. It involved using a ‘T-connector’ apparatus, which combines fats (dissolved in alcohol) with nucleic acids (dissolved in an acidic buffer). When streams of the two solutions merged, the components spontaneously formed densely packed LNPs21. It proved to be a more reliable technique than other ways of making mRNA-based medicines.

Once all the pieces came together, “it was like, holy smoke, finally we’ve got a process we can scale”, says Andrew Geall, now chief development officer at Replicate Bioscience in San Diego. Geall led the first team to combine LNPs with an RNA vaccine22, at Novartis’s US hub in Cambridge in 2012. Every mRNA company now uses some variation of this LNP delivery platform and manufacturing system — although who owns the relevant patents remains the subject of legal dispute. Moderna, for example, is locked in a battle with one Cullis-affiliated business — Arbutus Biopharma in Vancouver — over who holds the rights to the LNP technology found in Moderna’s COVID-19 jab.
