Pauline Marois would't be that bad. She's intelligent and respected.

She's one of the old guard of the PQ and she's well past her 'best before' date. The party needs new blood and a new direction. They should just shut up about separation, put it waaayyy back on the party platform. Put a platform together to govern the province properly, get expenses and taxes down, stop bending over for the unions and show that they can do a good job. Then in 20 or 30 years, when I'm well past my 'best before date' and most of the 'old guard' of the party are dead, bring sovereignty up again to see if anyone is still interested.

The way they're going now, the party will be lucky to survive the next election. Especially if they bring in someone like Marois or another has been. But then again, come to think about it...I hope they do exactly that.:p

Looks like Gilles Duceppe has reversed his decision to enter the race. Maybe he prefers Ottawa to Quebec City. All told, Shane Doan has had a better day than Gilles.

2-2 in bans... loser...
From CBC: Duceppe said he hoped to continue to work towards advancing the cause of Quebec sovereignty as Bloc leader in Ottawa, adding he intended to ask Bloc MPs on Monday to reiterate their confidence in his leadership.

Maybe he realizes that for now the dream is dead. Quebecers firmly let the PQ know in the last election that sovereignty is not the issue they want to bring up at the moment so he's throwing Marois to the wolves first. He'll let her squeal about the next referendum while he sits back in his cushy Ottawa job for another 4 years and pretends to be fighting for the cause.... Maybe next time round when Les Pure Laines (or however the fuck you spell it) are back on the side of the PQ he'll run.... or maybe the whole party is dead. Gee that would be a shame.

If only I knew...
What about this: the PQ realized internal division was useless and it was better to unite?
Duceppe's reaction is an healthy one for the sovereignty movement as a whole. He checked the reaction from the troops and took a team decision. Marois have a better chance of uniting the PQ than Duceppe could.

I think that Duceppe quit for 2 reasons. The first reason is the poll that was done/printed in LaPresse today which shows Pauline Marois with over 40% approval/support while he only has around 20%-30% approval/support to be leader of the PQ. The second reason is that if he left Ottawa and lost in Quebec for the PQ leadership, it would look bad as well as leave the BQ without anyone in the leadership position especially when we have a Conservative minority government where Harper can trigger a confidence motion the moment he thinks that he can win a majority.

What amazes me in all this is that not much changed in the last 24 hrs. He knew his departure would weaken the Bloc, he knew there was a lot of opposition to him in the PQ and he knew Marois was seriously thinking about running too (and if he didn't, he really should pick up a newspaper). So what changed? Is it the poll? Maybe, but that poll was so hollow. Before either candidates present a semblance of a platform, we already have them running against the ADQ and PLQ. That poll was a popularity contest pure and simple, but once people got to know what Duceppe and Marois stood for, the numbers could have radically changed. In any case, this whole thing looks a bit wonky to me...but hey, that's Quebec politics..Wonky R Us! :D

So instead of a popularity contest, we'll have a coronation of a new PQ leader as Marois will probably run unopposed. There will be no discussion of party direction or of change and things will go back to the old style of PQ politics which will get them nowhere. Add the fact that Duceppe has, as usual, made himself look like a jackass, and it was a banner day for the separatist cause.

But then again, who needs the PQ when the Liberal gov't has promised to ensure that the OLF will start enforcing the language laws to the 'letter of the law'? I guess we'll start seeing language inspectors back out on the streets of Montreal with their little notebooks and tape measures soon.

But give Duceppe credit: at least he is no longer photographed wearing cheese factory headgear that looks like a condom. (Of course, what he does privately is his own business.)
