Getting Canada Upset

What kind of ridiculously ignorant question is that ?

Not ridiculous at all. EB is very knowledgeable about what may happen if the USA upsets Canada.

Read the following link about the War of 1812 and what happened when the Americans upset us peace loving Canadians by burning York(Toronto).

I guess Canada will have to scrounge world markets in search of customers for it's production of iron ore (9th), nickel(3rd), zinc(5th), copper(5th), gold(4th), lead(?), molybdenum(?), potash(1st), silver(8th), fish, timber(5th), wildlife, coal(12th), petroleum(9th) & USA's largest supplier of oil, natural gas(5th) and hydro power(2nd).

The exodus of the late 70’s had nothing to do with taxation levels. It was the result of a fear campaign orchestrated by elements of the business and political community.

You are right the high taxes was not the reason for it but it does not help things. Again no business likes political unstability and also they do not want to be forced to operate in another language of their choice. Many people left the province due to the enforcement of the French language on people.

The ability of the Native people to protect their culture is not the result of any acceptance of multiculturalism or adherence to the society of rights promoted in the Trudeau year. Trudeau wanted to abolish the Indian status in Canada. Native people have regrouped and faugh for their rights, just like the Québécois did.

You are right but it does not sum the whole scenario. There is a major difference. The First Nations people are not enforcing their language and culture on everyone living in this province. They are not forcing businesses to operate in their language.

I always find it funny to see xenophobes and intolerants people associated exclusively to separatists. Of course, some separatists are xenophobes, intolerant and ignorant, just like some federalists are.

I am sure there are federalists who may be xenophobes. But the idea of the separatists is xenophobic. Federalists are not promoting enforcing on their language on other people nor are they trying to assimilate other cultures into their own.

Do you oppose the obligation imposed on immigrants to send their kids to French schools?

Yes I strongly oppose this. People should have the right to choose the language for their school to attend to. But again they restrict it because they feel threatened by the English language and want to make sure that French dominates all other languages.

Does any political party suggest that it should be the case?

Obviously they will not. They used the Notwithstanding Clause to create Bill 101. They are making a huge exception for Quebec to ensure the dominance of the French language even though it goes against democracy and freedom of speech.

True, it is entirely their problem. And it is why they decided to legislate instead of having the federal governement impose multiculturalism. If you vote for any major political party next week, you will be voting for a party that accepts the right of Québec to legislate on these matters and accepts the fact that Québec imposes that immigrants send their children to french schools.

Again people should have the choice to send their children to French or English school but this is not the case here. This goes back to the 70's the civil unrest caused by the FLQ. I doubt any political party except the BQ supports this position. But the Bill has been enforced. They made a huge exception for Quebec to allow them to do this.

The fact is that through intercultural marriage (you don’t oppose that, do you ?) some immigrants sadly choose not to transmit their language to their kids. It happens here just like it happens in the rest of Canada. Now, are going to tell me that the Bloc is promoting that?

I do not oppose intercultural marriage. I have no reason to. If immigrants choose not to transmit their language or culture to their kids there is nothing wrong with that. It is a choice that they made. But the Bloc is promoting enforcing the French language on everyone living in this province.

Show me only one article of the Bloc’s program promoting assimilation. Imposing the learning of French to immigrants’s kids is helping them to be part of our society, not at all negating their cultural heritage, even less asking them to forget it. That’s called integration, not assimilation.

I do not have to. Just the fact that they are enforcing the French language is enough to prove that. They used the "Notwithstanding Clause" to setup Bill 101 even though it override freedom of expression and freedom of equality. This goes against the Human Charter of rights and democracy. And they know that and so do the separatists. And you are asking if it is integration versus assimilation? Lol! That is downright assimilation. Because had the choice been available, English would be the dominant language but that would never stop French Quebecors from speaking their language and loose their culture just as is the case with Asians or Indians. They are not helping people to be a part of our society they are ensuring that French be enforced on them and that they adopt the Quebecor culture. Their main role is to ensure the dominance of the French language over all others.

Allow me to explain. Basically our SOB (''South of the Border'') friend is wondering whether or not the next government will put forward foreign policies that match US hegemonic ambitions to impose ''democracy'' by force. Another matter of concern is the necessity for Canada to amend import permits, regulations and rates in ways to facilitate US exports (while the US continue to enforce protectionism)

Hello everyone,

I will get right to the point. Moderators are not interested in receiving any PMs or emails claiming to disclose any member's personal information. Sending such a PM or email contravenes MERB rules regarding disclosure of such information either on the board or in private. I have not received any such information and if I do, it will be deleted immediately. Any member can make a claim regarding another member's identity but there is no method by which this information can be verified. Any such claim can not be taken as fact and will be disregarded.

The member in question has been banned and will not be returning. There is nothing to be gained by continued discussion of this matter and I would advise you all to return to the thread topic.

My question wasn't meant to play any games, I was just simply suggesting to anyone who actually has some valued information to keep it private and sent it to a Mod.

If you are into playing games, either of you and it makes you feel good, as hopefully grown men, I'm happy for you both.

Its been done, u are late a little.

You are right about that. But it was by far mostly English speaking Canadians, according to Statistic Canada (definitely my preferred reading lol).
In the same time, many French speaking Canadians came to Québec (dixit Statistic Canada).
All in all, the net flow was about neutral.
(I should enroll into MythBuster ).

And how would they do that ?
Both French and English colonizer made sure that they could never do that.
Now, in the case of Quebecers, we do have the means and the will.
And this comes from historical facts, where the English power did not have any choice to grant French Canadians some rights and power to protect its language, religion and culture.
All that, while having definite plans to assimilate the French culture (if you recall).

That’s a load of crap and is very hypocritical.
English language and culture is imposed on everyone, elsewhere in Canada, by default.

I don’t see much Chinese, Italian, Arab and Polish (the list goes on), nor even French schools or government services in any parts of the country.
Can Chinese or any of the above mentioned minorities work in their own language in Canada ?
Can Polish get medical treatments in their own language ?
Can Arabs have many wives in Canada ?
Isn’t this last case imposed by law…and by the dominant religion ?

Of course we are and we did not have any choice.
The English language is the de facto language in Canada and it does not need protection.
Giving a right in the Charter is fine, but this right is a general rule.
The main problem is the implementation of that right, which is very complex and mostly unfair mechanism.
How do you respect a right for a portion of a society, if doing so goes against some rights of another portion of that same society ?
Whatever you do will be unfair to some…but that is democracy…the tyranny of the majority.
In the case of Québec, it was the Notwithstanding Clause and Bill 101.
Yes, it may be seen as unfair…but it is much less hypocritical, don’t you think ?

I'm voting for the NDP this time because I would like to throw a scare into the Liberals. The Liberals have been taking federalist votes for granted since forever. Maybe some lost seats in Quebec will teach them a lesson.

Who's afraid of the Big Bad Jack? The Bloc, that's who

The election is looming closer and the rhetoric is reaching new heights: in a last-ditch effort to stem the NDP fever raging in the province, the Bloc Québécois is trotting out some of the most vociferous nationalists they can find to come to their aid: Jacques Parizeau and Gérald Larose.

Parizeau had to step down as Premier of Quebec and PQ leader as a result of his drunken "ethnics and anglos" speech following the "No" result of the 1995 referendum. He has long been a partisan of winning sovereignty by "any and all means" and even soft nationalists shy away from any association with him.

Gérald Larose used names like "scoundrel", "impostor", and "double-crosser" to describe Layton to his audience. Note that the French term he used "crosseur", has a sexual connotation: "he who wanks others"... Not bad for an ex-priest :amen:.

I am all for a strong Quebec, but within a united Canada. The Bloc has long been an obstacle to this, and I am glad people are finally seeing the harm they are doing. If this election chastises the neo-Cons in the rest of Canada and the Bloc here, it will have been well worth it.

There is also a new political formation on the provincial scene: "Coalition pour l'avenir du Québec", and I would not be surprised that this disenchantment with the BQ later on becomes one for the PQ at Assemblée Nationale.

Stay tuned :D.
