Gaby,
What you posted above about creating a "special group" to support the players in the "hot market" of Montreal is a little concerning to me. I believe you give them a seminar on being a Hab when they join the team and explain what that means. After that, grown men should be treated like grown men and not like babies who need constant supervision. While I realize the Habs do not want a repeat of the Price/Drouin situations, it is the responsibility of the organization to acquire players who can handle the pressures of being an NHL player. I believe that if you treat players as grown men they (for the most part) will behave like grown men. When you start sending the message to the players that you do not trust them to be able to hold their weenie when they go pee pee, and instead have someone watching over them, it condescends and makes them feel like juveniles.
Montreal isn't the only city that is hard to play in sometimes for its professional athletes. Do you think it's easy for baseball players on the Yankees and Mets in New York, or for the Red Sox in Boston? In watching the Yankees for over 40 years I have seen it happen that players need to take a leave of absence because of their mental well being. Specifically I remember Butch Wynegar, a catcher in the 1980s, was actually an above average catcher but just couldn't handle the pressure of playing in NYC. He took a half season off and eventually they had to trade him but this is very rare to happen. I think the Habs are overreacting to the Price-Drouin situations.
I think most teams employ mental health professionals who are there if needed by the players. But to have watchdogs on the players strikes me as likely counterproductive. A man has to be allowed to stand on his own 2 feet; if he cannot, the team should then pay for his mental health services and leave of absence. This seems pretty simple. The key is to make sure you have players who can stand on their own 2 feet and take the heat. All of us have pressure in our jobs, the Habs are paid a whole lot more to take it. If I took a leave of absence like Price from my job, I wouldn't be allowed back. They would just hire a replacement and say bye bye. These guys have to live in the real world like the rest of us Gaby.
