Not that we can change them, but it's interesting to look at possibilities.

The only one that I have a problem with is this:

i) All posters are expected to show the utmost respect and courtesy in all communications. Refrain from name calling, unjustified accusations etc.

The spirit is right, but not the wording. It isn't possible to show the "utmost respect" without paralyzing yourself. Maybe "All posters should remember that they're adults and not children. Don't start trouble. Don't insult each other and don't try to provoke anyone into an outburst. Refrain from name calling, unjustified accusations etc. That goes for posts, PMs, or any other communication done through MERB."

My version sounds harsher and less dignified, but actually it gives Merbites more leeway while laying down a bright line that people can't cross: Don't start anything.

Such is my view anyway. Anyone else's thoughts are welcome, whether the subject is this particular rule or any other.

Hum...don't start anything? But once it does (and it will) anything goes? No...that's too easy, saying ''he started it !''and then full blown war?

No thank you for the position of King. The last French king lost his head during a "change". So for me "if it ain't broke then don't try to fix it". lol

First you need to start with the fact that the Mods don't apply the rules in an even manner. They don't and this is a possible area of non-comprehension. The rule is the rule. The Mods will interpret them in the way they wish, in the manner they wish, at a time of their choosing. This is not a democracy or a republic. Therefore the exersize is moot.

If I were King of merb I would delegate to a few Mods and hold them responsible for making things work smoothly. I would hire Doc and make him my impertinent royal joculator. He could make fun of the Mods and they would kick him down the stairs to the delight of the royal court.

The rules may not always be applied equally as it is in a real court, but then again members don't have to wait 2 years in legal limbo and spend 10k$ on defense. I think it works well like that.

Let's just say mods can sometime be YMMV. They have their good day, bad day, PMS, etc. :D

I see your point, but the rule also says no name-calling, insults, etc. So it wouldn't be anything goes even if somebody else "started it." But maybe some more fine-tuning is necessary to make that point.

Sometimes it's hard to tell exactly where something "started"

That's as correct as any. The Mods are YMMV.

P.S. Could be that change of life thing also. I understand Mod 11 has hot flashes when he sees any of my posts.....

My rule would be "if you want to advertise your SP services on Merb, I must try you out first"... For quality control purposes of course :D

The wording of the rules can be modified. I personally prefer a down-to-earth wording everybody will understand over a pseudo-legal formulation.

If I were the king of MERB...

The "don't start" thing, I would do it the same way we deal with kids: one warning and if there's any back and forth after the warning, no need to argue who started, everybody to the penalty box.

I like Scioncarf's idea and I wouldn't reserve the job of "impertinent royal joculator" to a single person, I'd likely build a team who's players would change daily in adherence and number. ;)

Alyssa, the "face-to-face" rule would "face" people swearing they'd do the same in person... That's human nature I guess. :(

The "quality control", it's not a moderator's benefit as of now but maybe as a king? Mmmm... :D

Keep'em coming people! It's interesting and some of you are damn right creatively entertaining. That's good! :thumb:

I just don't like the penalty box system. I prefer cruelty. Penalties should be to act as a mod for 1 week (or whatever the length) and have each of your decision approved by 80% of members in a public poll!

I love it! People would behave in fear of having to be Mods! What it tells about the perception of the job is a bit troubling...

the main rule i would say is; "if you wouldn't be able to say it face to face, don't post it on the board."

We would get rid of 75% of the shit disturbers here...
i loveeeeeeeeeeeee it and agree

Once I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
Oh... my unspeakable wife, Queen Lisa, now I eat humble pie
I'm telling you I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
And now I work at the Pizza Pizza

1 2 3 4!

Royalty, lord it looked good on me
Buried in silk in the royal boudoir or going nuclear free
Or playing Crokinole with the Princess of Monaco
Telling my jokes to the OPEC leaders, getting it all on video

Once I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
A palatial palace, that was my home, now I eat humble pie
I'm telling you I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
And now I vacuum the turf at SkyDome
Once he was the King of MERB

I can't wait, I'm lowering ad rates, my people say:
"King, how are you such a genius?
There's a mod watching
and reviews on our plates!"

It's laissez-faire, I don't even give a care
Let's make Friday part of the weekend
And give every reviewer a chocolate eclair

Once I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
Hey Clinton! Hey Yeltsin! Got problems?
You PM me, now I eat humble pie
I'm telling you I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
Now the Leafs call me up to drive the Zamboni
Once he was the King of MERB

Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce to you the international orchestra!

Now some of you might be wondering how I came to be living in Canada
after being royalty in MERB. Should I tell them, guys?
Tell us, King!

You see late one night when the palace was asleep
Out of my royal chambers and into the garden I creep
And I wait till the appointed time, when the moon is lighting the pitch
At which point my peasant friend, who looks just like me
Arrives and we make switch!
(gasp)

Prince and pauper, junior and whopper
World made up of silver and copper
Under my own volition, I took a change of position
So next time you drool in the pizza line
Remember, slower pizza's more luscious
The King of MERB never rushes!!!

Once I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
I was lookin' for off-handed ways to improve us, now I eat humble pie
I'm telling you I was the King of MERB, now I eat humble pie
And now I'm jamming with my penis.

Once he was the King of MERB

Seems there was this monarch of Spain who went through something very similar.
