I'm just happy he didn't end up in TO. I would have hated to cheer for one of their players. I would have liked to see him go to Washington though!

And he came cheap!!! :D

They signed him to an entry level contract at less than $1 million, including the signing bonus.

It's great to be a Leafs fan these days!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations! You just signed your back up goalie! Burke is a genius! Plan the parade route!

Too funny - Laff fans excited about signing a second stringer at the league rookie maximum for an entry level contract. Decent back ups are available for half that amount!

Wilson’s remarks about Sedins prompt league investigation

The Toronto Maple Leafs are under investigation for tampering because of comments made by head coach Ron Wilson about the club’s interest in Daniel and Henrik Sedin prior to the free-agent deadline on July 1.

They drafted well, patiently groomed their youngsters in the American Hockey League before promoting them to the parent club, and had a clear-cut vision of where the team was going.

So where is this team going now?

Well, some of the youngsters the team was looking at as a foundation on which to build can no longer be counted on. If you believe the rumours that circulated around Montreal last winter, the kids were more interested in partying than playing. And it showed.

I think Montreal has a real problem 'cause while they have finally managed to draft well (which they didn't years ago) they just don't manage to truly develop and retain their top players. Partly management but...

I wonder if part of the problem is the combination of life as a local hero in sin city combined with media harrassment. That is : take a young guy (even a teenager in some cases) finally getting into the lineup of the main team. He plays a few good games so he becomes a household name among hockey fans. He can now go into a bar or strip club anywhere in Montreal and be treated like a god. Girls will fall over themselves to f*ck him. Good looking girls, girls who aren't necessarily a good influence in their own work ethic.

Now, the hockey media will generally write up the guy as the next Rocket Richard/Henri Richard/Larry Robinson/Patrick Roy because of his performance in two or three games and, when he has a bad game, they are all over him. Potentially they even write articles about his performance in practice! The media strutiny is totally unforgiving and relentless. But there's always those strippers, drugs, cars, etc.

The combination of the hero-status on Crescent street and media are probably not helpful to someone who wants to focus on their hockey career. I have a couple of friends who did PhDs out west (One in Edmonton and one in the states) who both say that they don't think they would have found as much success as they did in their career if it hadn't been for doing their degree in a "boring city with nothing to do". Both implied that staying in Montreal would have been a big mistake.

After analyzing the recent signings and trades, there are some upsides but overall, I'm confused at why Gainey signed who he did. If it were me, I would have signed Gaborik, Cammalleri, Beauchemin and re-sign Koivu. Gill isn't the worst signing but they signed him for too much. Montreal got a lot SMALLER as a team when they need to get bigger, especially if they want to beat Boston for the division. There are benefits to the Gomez and Gionta additions, as they have had success with them in the past. Cammalleri could fit in with them on the left side or they may put Andrei Kositsyn or Latandresse with them. Spacek will help the power play but Montreal needed to re-sign Komisarek for his Defensive play. Montreal needs and experienced and physical defensive defenceman to round out there blueline. Either that or some of there young talent needs to step up, maybe P.K Suppan will prove he is NHL ready.

Overall it's a wait-and-see kind of thing but overall I grade the acquisitions a B_. Some decent players but ultimately didn't fill their needs.

The big question to me is team chemistry. I'm not thrilled about Gomez's huge contract, but I hope he can rekindle the chemistry he had with Gionta in Jersey. I think Cammalleri will do fine. He might not get 39 goals, but I expect him to get around 30. You can call these guys second line players all you want but they are an improvement over Koivu (who has nothing left in the tank), Higgins and Tanguay. Too bad Kovy is gone but he played when he felt like it and his gloomy personnality is a minus both on the ice and in the locker room.

As I stated before, Gill will be fine playing with Markov. Anyone who saw him play with Scuderi during the playoffs knows that. And Scuderi is no Markov by a long shot. I can't fathom why anyone would argue that Brisebois would have done just as well as Gill. Especially when one argues about size and toughness...

Plus, the Habs just signed Paul Mara. Another big, solid defensive D-man, who is known as a team leader. Even Rangers fans are sorry to see him go. The Habs got bigger on defense which is a good thing. Markov-Gill, Hamrlik-Spacek, Gorges-Mara, not too shabby.

On offense that's another story. Well at least they also just signed Travis Moen :)

However, it won't be easy for him playing in a Jacques Martin system. Even Wayne Gretzky in his prime would have had a hard time scoring in such a system!

This silliness needs to stop...

"From 1998-99, when Martin won the Jack Adams Award, until the end of his Ottawa tenure in 2003-04, the Senators finished in the top five in scoring in every season but one, and they racked up the most goals in the NHL in Martin's final campaign. Over the same period, Ottawa on average finished eighth in goals against.

"If you've got a chance to forecheck, he's not going to hold you back," ex-Senators forward Shaun Van Allen, who played four seasons under Martin, told Hockey Night in Canada Radio. "He wants you to use your skill and put pressure on the defence.""

Another good signing by Bob and an excellent addition to an already solid Habs blue line - welcome to Montreal! :D

Agreed, Montreal's top 6 d-men are as good as anyone's in the league!:D

Good job in schooling that poster :D

Speaking of the Maple Laffs, Blowhard Burke’s latest big signing after the blockbuster acquisition of a back up goalie: RICKARD WALLIN!

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=2191

Who? Niclas Wallin from Carolina? No, Rickard Wallin. While Bob was busy signing quality NHL players, Blowhard Burke was targeting the “best players not playing in the NHL” and in a 30 team 600 player league that isn’t saying a lot! This guy was a Phoenix sixth round pick, couldn’t crack the Coyotes lineup – should fit in nicely in Toronto on a line with Colton Orr!

That happened 10 years ago!! That's the best you can come up with?? You're absolutely correct.....THIS SILLINES NEEDS TO STOP!! :D

"...and they racked up the most goals in the NHL in Martin's final campaign (2003-2004)."

Your math and reading comprehension skills are about as good as your hockey knowledge...

Jacques Lemaire is a defensive coach. Jacques Martin is a puck possession coach who instills defensive discipline. A lot of players who played for him give him credit for making them better two-way players. The notion that he somehow stiffles players with offensive skills is ridiculous and the numbers are there to prove it.

Somehow this is just going to go way above your head like everything else does.

As good or as bad?? I award you the Jerry Lewis Merb Comedian-of-the-Night Award, my dear friend. That was absolutely hillarious!!!!!!! :D

Joke all you want fool, the Maple Laff’s one dimensional defense will be among the most penalized in the league next season – any team with a decent forecheck and power play will light it up against the Maple Turds!

Speaking of next season, Montreal’s goals for/against ratio will still be higher than the Laffs – book it!

Bob’s done pretty well, signing Buffalo’s top point producing defense man:
