You heard it here first: Babs will not finish the term of his contract in TO. He will become just another of the legion of those paid not to perform for the Leafs. Armstrong, Randy Carlyle, Frattin, Horton, Nonis, Scrivens, Tucker are not doing anything for the Leafs but are getting some or all of their renumeration from the Leafs. (It could be argued that Kessel and Captain Pylon should be added to that list.)

This is a near excellent move by the Leafs. As you brilliantly pointed out it's all about pain. To get there you need to build the highest hopes so the crash will be bigger. Among these fans that have gotten more and more immune to pain it's getting tougher to find that big crash. The huge $50 million signing of Babcock with the cachet of having been a Stanley Cup and Olympic Champion will rekindle the great expectation HIGH that brings back the bliss of their masochistic crash. It's getting tough to do that after 48 years.

It's only too bad the Leafs didn't sign someone who could mold their greatest natural skills into true championship caliber. But then again Arnold Palmer is a little up there is years.
