This sounds like so much wishful thinking to me. Do you have a view into a crystal ball that guarantees the Yankees starting pitchers will be on the DL and the Sox starters will be off of it? If so I would like to peek into this crystal ball.

History is the best teacher. Each has already been on the DL once this year. Each has a long recent injury history.

History also teaches that the Red Sox had a 4 game lead in July last year which was blown. History also teaches that the Yankees have won 9 straight AL East titles, including 2 years ago after starting the season 11-19, with worse pitching staffs.

On further reflection, this is clearly a desperation move by the Yankees, signing a five inning pitcher to a record contract, while bidding against no one.

The last time he tried to pitch a full season, 2005, Clemens bombed out after August, pitching to a 5.40 ERA in September and 5.63 in October. Of course, he won't have to worry about pitching in October this year.

What the Yankees have done by signing Clemens to the biggest contract in history and elevating the team's overall payroll to the highest in history is set the bar for failure at an all time high. While the Yankees record of failure in this century is really quite breathtaking, over $1 billion spent for nothing, 2007's failure will set a new standard.

What they will be getting for this bargain is not only the performance of a Hall of Fame pitcher, but also, as Hideki Matsui said, a massive clubhouse presence and someone who loves to tutor young pitchers, which is exactly what the Yankees have in mind with Hughes, whom Clemens will see is a younger version of himself.

You continue to be a moron, Joe. The Sox offered Clemens $9 M for the last three months of the season, knowing that there was no way he was going to take it.

You are right that Beckett and Wakefield can't continue their currrent pace. They will, however, continue to be in the top 20, if not the top 5, pitchers in the league. Matsuzaka will get his mechanical problems solved and eliminate the one inning per game that he hasn't been brilliant. With Schilling, that gives the Sox 4 aces.

Tavarez has been quite acceptable his last two starts and will continue to give the Sox valuable innings until Lester is ready to take his spot in the rotation.

Why should the Sox respond to an obvious panic move and offer more than the $20 M the Yanks are giving Clemens for his 5 innings a week. I assume the Yanks are also picking up the tab to fly Clemens into whatever ballpark they happen to be playing in for his one day a week with the club.

Do you really believe that Clemens needs the extra $8.5 million the Yankees offered him in order to make his mortgage or car payments? He doesn't. He doesn't need money from either team in order to live securely the rest of his life. His sole criteria was the team that gives him the best chance to win, although it's likely that the friendships he has with Pettite, Jeter and others on the Yankees team helped, as did his reported fondness of Brian Cashman who has gotten beaten up in the New York media recently.

In his interview on the YES network during the game and immediately following the dramatic and theatrical announcement of Clemens' return to pinstripes, he made several cryptic statements. He was asked if he was made offers by other teams and he said that he was, and that he did not accept those offers "for reasons I will get into at the end of this season."

I don't know what Clemens meant by that remark but we can all draw our own conclusions.

Clemens also mentioned that there are 3 or 4 key players on the Yankees team without championship rings which he found "unbelieveable given the calibre of this ballclub the last few years." I assume he was referring to A-Rod, Giambi, Abreu, and Matsui since Damon, Jeter, Posada all have rings. He indicated he wanted those players to have the rings he believes they deserve.
