Maybe, but don't forget that because of the tax situation, Montreal (and to a degree, other Canadian teams) have to overpay players by at least $1 million. Just for example, players playing for Tampa & Florida don't have to pay taxes on their contracts. It's a somewhat unfair advantage for such teams.
After today's Carey Price signing, the Habs have about $7.7 million in cap space. They still need to sign RFA's P.K. Subban, Lars Eller, Raphael Diaz & Aaron Palushaj. If they run out of cap space, they likely will ship high-scoring center Scott Gomez to the minors, thus creating $7.357 in extra cap space.

Coyotes' Brett MacLean went into cardiac arrest last night
GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney has issued the following statement regarding Coyotes forward Brett MacLean - who suffered a cardiac emergency last night in Owen Sound, Ontario.
“Brett was playing hockey last night in Owen Sound, Ontario when he suffered a medical emergency,” said Maloney. “Brett received CPR on site and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance where he was treated. He was then transported via an air ambulance to Knight University Hospital in London, Ontario where he was admitted to the cardiac ICU. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brett and his family. We request that everyone please respect their privacy at this time. We will provide an update on Brett's status when information is available.”

I think Gustavsson will work out in Detroit because he:
- is playing for a successful and well respected coach - instead of a prick like Wilson who routinely throws his players under the bus
- is playing for a classy and well run organization - instead of a bubbling farce of a hockey franchise found in Toronto
- has a well-defined role and clear expectations - i.e., he’s not expected to be some team saviour having been over hyped by a buffoon, blow hard general manger
The habs have under $8 million to work with and still have three key restricted free agents left to sign: P.K. Subban, Lars Eller and Raphael Diaz. This is why i'm certain that they'll likely be sending Scotty Gomez to the minors in order to save on his cap-hit. Or, if they get lucky, they'll find a team fighting to get to the salary cap bottom.
I'm looking at their defence and there is still a lot of questions. Who will be able to move the opposing forwards from in front of the net? As it stands, the defencemen are: Markov, Kaberle, Bouillon, Gorges, Emellin, Webber, P.K. & Diaz.
I don't know why they signed Francis Bouillon. He's undersized, his better days are behind him, and he's 36 years old!
I'm also looking at the forwards and with A.K. gone, who will be scoring the goals? The first line again? Will Eric Cole be able to replicate last season's production? He's 33 years old and banged up. Brandon Prust was a decent addition to the team's third or fourth line, but they had to overpay to get him. Last year's five goals won't do anything to improve the team's offensive stats. I think adding Colby Armstrong was a good move, since it didn't cost them much and he's a good guy to have around the team. He will become a fan favorite in Mtl and on the social media circuit. Travis Moen? They locked him up for another four years. Why????
As for Carey Price, a lot of people questionning giving him that much money, but they fail to realize that he had the leverage in the negotiations with the team since they risked losing him to unrestricted free agency next season if they didn't give him what he wanted. Due to the taxation situation in Quebec as it is, the habs often have to overpay free agents (or potential free agents) in order to lure them to Montreal or keep them there. It's the same situation in the rest of Canada, but to a slightly lesser degree. To put things into perspective, if you're a free agent & have a choice between playing in Mtl and in Florida, for example, why would you want to play in Montreal knowing that you'd have to give away half of your salary to taxes while not paying any tax if you play instead in Florida? It's all about economics....

Price got paid big so he would agree to the term, had he not been offered big $$$ for long term he would of signed a small term deal and walked after the contract was over. (likely this is what happens in the subban contract as well)

Toronto got just as an effective player to play on their THIRD LINE not FOURTH LINE like Prust, for a mil less per season and 2 years less. You can overpay for Prust all you want, but he will get 10 mil versus McClement's three and 2 less years. (if Jay M plays well he will get re signed, if Prust bombs, your stuck with him for 4 yrs and 10 mil) When you understand hockey and how things work in a cap era, then come at me and we can debate, until then, dont waste my time please.

The habs had no choice but to give Carey Price the long-term contract he was asking for. They had to overpay in order to buy some of his UFA years. If they would have signed only for one year (or go to arbitration), he possibly would have wound up costing them more next season or so. Worse, he might have hit the market and head off to the highest bidder. Price is from western Canada and i'm sure he'd prefer playing there. A country music freak, he'd be in paradise playing in Nashville.
It's the same situation with P.K. Subban. My gut-feeling is that the team will try to sign him to a long-term contract in order to avoid the same situation teams like Nashville (Suter & Webber) are facing. It's quite possible they'll sign him for one-year and re-evaluate the situation next season, but they'll be faced with similar situations next season (e.g. Max Paccioretty). Considering that Subban is already walking on egg-shells with the new coach (Mike Therrien, who's been open with his criticism of Subban in the past), he'll likely be signed to a multi-year contract, making him easier to trade if his relationship with the new coaching staff hits rock-bottom during the upcoming season(s).
And finally, yes, Montreal has overpaid for some of the players it signed. But as i've mentionned in the past, Canadian teams (especially ones from Quebec) are faced with a dilemma when trying to lure and keep talent due higher taxes in Canada. Let's say that you're a player earning $6 million and you'd like to play in your hometown province (e.g. Quebec). Your take-home pay would be around $3 million, not counting the fact that you overpay for everything that you purchase (gas, food, etc) and have to pay extra taxes (GST, HST, incl) on top of that. On the other hand, if you'd play for a Florida-based team, you'd take home pretty much the entire $6 million, plus the cost of living is lower. Quality of life is much better in Florida (no winters, beaches, etc) and it's basically a no-brainer. For many of those players, they have wives who are American & children who go to American schools. You can't just relocate the entire family to Canada because you want to play in your hometown....especially when that hometown is french (and school is in french) and the entire family speaks only engish.
Just take the Steve Nash situation. The Raptors made him a heck of an offer. However, you have to take into consideration that he would have given away nearly half of that amount to taxes. On top of that, he has three young children with his ex-wife who lives in Phoenix and there isn't a chance in hell that she would have let him take the kids across the continent and live in Toronto. So, he took less money to play for the Lakers (but considering high taxes in Canada, it's a fairly even trade) and he's close to his kids. It was a no-brainer for him and i hope that Canadian basketball fans don't hold this against him.
