William Nylander signs for 6 years/$6.9 million per season

William Nylander accepts the Maple Leafs final offer of $6.9 million/season for 6 years. It was reported to me that the offer was accepted three minutes before the 5pm deadline. Last week one of my sources had told me that $6.9 million for six years was what the Nylander camp was looking for to get him to sign a contract. Looks like waiting it out until the last minute was a good strategy for the Nylander camp.

Nylander's deal is slightly higher than the one Boston gave David Pastrkak last season. The fact the league's cap is expected to rise at the end of the season was a factor.

The Leafs may be slightly unhappy with the amount they had to agree to (a source had told me they were willing to go to $6.5 million/6 years max) but they now have the luxury of being able to traded him for something of equal or greater value should they chose to. Letting him waste away at his home in Sweden wouldn't have done them or him any good.

I hope Brian Cashman makes the same pitch when all the Yankees’ talented young players are eligible to become free agents. The hometown discount should be an important tool in these negotiations.

Many insiders are saying that the Leafs caved in to Nylander's demands and that many GM's around the league are likely upset. Hockey Night in Canada panelist & former GM Brian Burke was particularly irate when he learned of the signing. But considering Burke's track record as Leafs GM when he signed free agent Mike Komisarek & then Dion Phaneuf to those big lucrative contracts maybe Mr. Burke isn't in a position to criticize the Leafs for the Nylander re-signing. Sour grapes, maybe?

I don't know. I think it's a good deal for both sides if Nylander continues to progress and becomes a key player. A six-year contract at that kind of money also gives the Leafs some flexibility if they chose to trade him in order to give them cap space. It's easier to trade a player with that type of contract instead of an expiring one if you want to get some equal value in return.

They have no grounds to be upset. He is the Leafs’ player and they’ve only got so much money they can allot to each of their players and stay under the cap. If they gave Nylander too much that means someone else isn’t getting enough and eventually it will be a problem. However those are the Leafs’ problems, and I don’t see how it is any other GM’s business how the Leafs choose to spend their money.

I personally think the Leafs realize they are close to having a Cup winning team and are going for it. They are no different than the Yankees being close to a World Series winning team and they are going for it with their off season moves.

Columnist Jeff Blair pretty much said the same thing earlier today. Sure some GMs may feel the Leafs raised the bar for impending RFAs such as Sebastian Aho of the Hurricanes and others. But he stated that it's a Leafs problem & that their window to win a Cup is now and if they feel they needed to slightly overspend in order to get Nylander signed long term then it's their right.

The Leafs temporarily sent down steady defenceman Travis Dermott yesterday in order to make up some cap room to sign Nylander while they figure out what to do next. Well just about an hour ago they traded Josh Leivo to the Vancouver Canucks for some unknown minor leaguer in order to free up a roster spot for Nylander. He'll likely play next Saturday with a possibility on Thursday. But with the Leafs rolling without him in their lineup there's no rush to put him in the lineup immediately.

There's word the Leafs might try to re-sign Jake Gardiner this season. Once signed nothing prevents them from trading him during the off-season. At least they'll get something in return for him, unlike JVR who ended up an unrestricted free agent by the end of last season. The Leafs chose to keep him in their lineup for last season's playoffs instead of trading him at the deadline. It was a gamble they lost and lost him for nothing in return.

TBL 5 NJD 1.....Kucherov with 1g 3a extends his point streak to 10 games......Point still on the move with 1g 2a......

Scoring leaders Kucherov is #3 with 42 pts, Point is #5 with 37 pts.......and far far is Stamkos #46 with only 25 pts....very unusual.

Here you go, 15 goals in 14 games for Austin Matthews:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nHb4oBz-ZR8

The other goal was even better, couldn’t find video on it but he grabbed the puck mid air via an over the shoulder catch behind the net (looked like a baseball centerfielder), dropped the puck on ice and stroked it right into the corner of the net.

Edit- here you go:

By the way earlier this year Doc Holliday was down in Patrick Marleau but he now has 7 goals and is on pace for a 20 goal season. I think that is very acceptable production from a 40 year old who is on the team for veteran leadership and is just a complimentary player and not a main man player. He probably should retire after this year though.

You say it was a party but the goalies were not invited. Bobrovsky was relieved of his goalie duties after allowing the first 8 goals in 2 periods. His save % of .692 is not what you want from your goalie.
