Matthews...i heard yesterday on TSN......he will negotiate a new contract for next year.....and the C could come with a massive contract on several years.

No captain with the Leafs this year BUT a triumvirat.....3 leaders with an A......Tavares--Marleau--Rielly......hum....no Mattthews......i guess Habs will go for the same scenario BUT not easy to find 3 leaders here...lol.

I'm happy to hear this. Matthews is still too young & inexperienced to be given such an honor. My guess is that he'll be the next alternate captain once Marleau retires. Tavares will likely be given captaincy if he already doesn't have it & Matthews the 'A'.

If it were my choice my team's best player would be the last player i'd name captain, especially in hockey-crazy cities like Montreal & Toronto (especially Montreal). It's too much unnecessary pressure put upon a player's shoulders. Let the hard-working marginal player with leadership skills have the 'C'. But we all know this will never happen.

The captaincy is not for everyone. Take Dion Phaneuf. Instantly giving him the captaincy when he arrived in Toronto nearly ruined his once-promising career. I'm absolutely certain he'd be a different player today had he not been given the captaincy when he arrived in Toronto. Same thing for Max Pacioretty and countless other players.

Hey Doc, where do you think the Habs will finish? I doubt they will be in the Jack Hughes sweepstakes but who knows. They don't look great on paper...

I think there are 5 teams "worthy" of contention for Jack Hughes sweepstakes:

Buffalo Sabres
Ottawa Senators
Montreal Canadiens
Vancouver Canucks
Arizona Coyotes

Vancouver already picked his brother Quinn #7 overall last year and are licking their chops at the chance for another Hughes with a 3rd Hughes boy in the pipeline.

Look behind you.
The GEO are arguing with Nurse over $500,000.00. Just my opinion but after paying $2.5 mil for a backup goalie I would pay Nurse the extra half mil.
And yes, the GEO will be in the cup race this year.

I agree that it looks pretty ridiculous. Nurse will likely end up getting the money and in the meantime the Oilers are likely irritating the heck out of him. Unless it's all strategic and the Oilers are tipping their hand to other teams indicating that Nurse may be available for the right price. Last season i was hearing rumours that the Leafs were interested in obtaining him. Who knows.

I'd swap Detroit with Buffalo on that list. Something tells me that the Sabres won't be as bad as some people believe. They're a team loaded with young talent.

Yeah I agree, there are 6-7 teams who don't seem great on paper but in the end, the lottery will have the final say on the matter!

Just listened to Tony Marinaro's interview with Marc Bergevin. According to Bergevin the Jonathan Drouin experiment at center is over and he'll spend the season playing the wing. Max Domi will be the team's #1 center and will likely have Drouin on his line.

Finally a logical move by management!

Doc,

Your post begs the question of whether Drouin, regardless of his position if he plays wing, was a worthwhile acquisition for what TB received (Sergachev). Your post also doesn’t analyze whether Domi is in fact a #1 centreman.

These are the more important questions and we do not have answers.

I agree with this, finally a good move haha ! Drouin is an ultra skilled player, playing at C clearly hindered his abilities. To answer EagerBeaver, I don't think Domi is a 1C but with many C prospects now in the farm system, he might be a good stopgate solution

Who knows?....but personnellement i don't think so.....we already saw the best of him.....d'ailleurs il n'apparaît plus dans les top goalies.....bien chanceux d'avoir signé ce contrat insensé.....et de plus pas de défensive in front of him....il va trouver la saison longue....
