The Drouin trade was worth the gamble at the time. Everyone loved the trade and it could have been worse had Tampa not kept Sergachev with the big team last season or else Montreal would have had to surrender their 2nd-round pick.
For me the problem with Drouin was granting him a big multiyear contract even before he had played his first game with them. They also over hyped him and anointed him as their next big superstar even before he had played a single game. Considering his young age and being put under the microscope in hockey's biggest market (especially in his home town) was not a good thing. But time will tell if he'll play up to expectations or not. In other words the jury is still out.
As for Max Domi being a #1 centre the answer is a definite NO. Number one centres have more than 9 goals and 36 assists in a season. Max Domi is NOT a centre. He's a left-winger. But habs management are once again trying out an experience at centre by moving a wing to the centre position. So here's my answer: ONLY IN MONTREAL WOULD MAX DOMI BE CONSIDERED A NUMBER ONE CENTRE.
It's funny but many other teams including Toronto don't seem to have a problem finding top centres. As a matter-of-fact the Leafs are overloaded at the centre position. William Nylander's natural position is centre and he won the MVP at the World Championships a couple of years ago while playing centre for Team Sweden. Considering his current contract impasse i'd say he's likely available for the right price. Why don't the habs try to acquire him? Although there isn't much left on the farm and someone could say the same thing about the current team i'm sure the habs could figure out a way to get the Leafs interested in making a trade.
Could the habs offering their upcoming first-round pick for William Nylander be a possibility? Remember that William Nylander was also a high first-round pick just a few years ago and were he not surrounded by the likes of Tavares, Matthews and Marner he already could be superstar material in a market such as Montreal's. And if the habs would prefer acquiring Nazem Kadri i'm sure the Leafs would be more accomodating than if it'd be Nylander.
