It seems as if some members have forgotten what this thread is for and what the Free For All thread is for. If you are not a Leafs fan, keep your ass out of this thread. You have both the official NHL thread to post in as well as the Free For All. This thread is for Leafs fans ONLY.

Does the same apply for the Habs thread?

Leafs fans, Jimmy van Riemsdyck and Phil Kessel have been named to the US Olympic Hockey Team! Max Pacioretty of Montreal also was named!

http://espn.go.com/olympics/hockey/...an-jack-johnson-left-us-olympic-hockey-roster

These 3 will fight together for Olympic Gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was a little disappointed that Alex Galchenyuk was not selected for the American team as he performed brilliantly for the American junior team, but I guess they felt he was too young and too wet behind the ears. He will be on the team in 4 years.

JVR and Pacioretty are good choices. The US missed the boat, however, by not selecting Ben Bishop (especially), Bobby Ryan or Kyle Okposo. That they picked Jimmy Howard over Ben Bishop is just plain bizarre.

I do agree with you, my friend. I would have picked Bobby Ryan for certain, and Bishop over Jimmy Howard. I consider Ben Bishop among the league's best, even though he isn't very well known around the league right now.

The article I linked to reports that the selection committee was concerned that Ben Bishop sucked moose balls at the World Championships. Jimmy Howard is a little more battle tested but he probably will not play unless there is an injury. Miller and Quick will probably start all games.

Right you are Doc, I thought Ryan would be an easy choice for team USA. Unfortunately, Brian Burke is not too enthusiastic about that selection ...

“I think we have to know what we’re taking with Bobby,” says Burke, who had him in Anaheim when the Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007.

“He’s a passive guy,” Burke says. And over 82 games, yes, Saad and or Pacioretty might be more attractive than Ryan.

“He is not intense. That word is not in his vocabulary,” Burke says. “It’s never going to be in his vocabulary. He can’t spell intense.”

If he’s not going to be put in a role in which he can score an important goal, use his skills as a sniper, he shouldn’t go, Burke says.

Burke is looking for guys who will play with pride, guts and determination and care about the uniform they are wearing. He obviously felt Ryan does not have those qualities. The selection committee has repeatedly stated that it is not the 25 best guys who would get picked. It is the 25 guys who give them the best chance to win as a team, as opposed to a collection of stat-amassing individuals. The criteria includes toughness, guts, and intensity, qualities that Ryan leaves at home.

I think you guys are confusing the selection of NHL All Stars with the selection of an Olympic Team. This is not a meaningless all star game they are playing for shits and giggles. It is for Olympic Gold. And although American amateur hockey players won Gold medals a couple of times, the American NHL players have not. They want a statement to be made about the development of hockey at the junior level in the USA.

They said the same things about the 2010 USA olympic team as well, and they may have lost to Canada in the gold medal game but surprised many who never gave them a chance to medal, let alone play for gold. Ryan was at the center of trade rumors several times while in Anaheim, and Burke had him there when he won the cup in 2007 and is good friends with GM Bob Murray. I trust what the committee decided. Besides, Bobby Ryan plays in a horrible city (Kanata) for a horrible team (sens, ugh) GLG!

Iggy,

I think a lot of these guys do not understand that they are playing on a much bigger rink over there in Sochi, so the selection committee went with mobile defensemen whose games are adjustable to the wider ice. You have to take these things into consideration in picking your roster. You can't have big, slow, lumbering defensemen who will be made to look like statues by the fleet forwards on that open ice.

Okay, but Bobby Ryan is not a defenceman. He's a forward.

I don't agree with how Burke dealt with this issue, but i'm not surprised. He hasn't been the same since one of his sons was killed in a car accident a couple of years ago. He has been very grouchy, irritable & has appeared very unhappy since that unfortunate day.

On another note, Steve Yzerman is expected to name his roster for Team Canada on Tuesday & it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't chose P.K. Subban. He has never been a huge fan of Subban's attitude & he already has many all-star defencemen to chose from. Among those expected to be named are Drew Doughty, Jay Bouwemeester, Alex Pietrangelo, Shae Webber, Marc Staal, Duncan Keith & Brent Seabrook. The names Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Dan Boyle, Kris Letang, Dan Girardi, Dion Phaneuf, Mark Giordano & a few others have also been floated around.

Subban is extremely gifted offensively, but has strugged defensively & would look like a deer in the headlights if not for being partnered with Andrei Markov during the season. Yzerman & Babcock might prefer to keep more of a stay-at-home type who can play effictively both sides of the ice.

I agree, Doctor, although even prior to his son's death he never really presented what one would call a jovial image. The happiest I ever saw him was actually quite recently. It was right after he fired his friend Jay Feaster, and he was smiling, making jokes, and being very pleasant during a television interview. Perhaps now that he is running the show in Calgary his grief has passed.

It's been a long time but it's great to be a Toronto sports fan these days. The Leafs are back to their winning ways and should win tonight against the Strangers, and the Raptors are one of the hottest teams in the NBA and are now in 4th place in their conference. Go Leafs, Go Raptors!

Quite correct my friend, Ottawa is a boring city. I did a work stage there during my undergraduate days and as a government town, seemed to completely shut down after 5pm. The only fun area was the bytown market on weekends. On a positive note, it was easy to get tickets when the Habs were in town and half to 2/3rds of the arena were cheering for the visitors. The arena is not downtown, its inconveniently located outside the city.

The Bytown market area is great on weekends. I've also had some great times in some Irish pubs along Sparks street. Nearby Gatineau is also a great option, especially the stripclub called "Pigales". Many Mtl girls work there.

Sure, Ottawa doesn't come close to Mtl or Toronto for the nightlife, but it's not as bad as people think. The best time to go is during the summer.

Speaking of having a great time, i wouldn't mind giving Saint-Tite a try next summer during the country & western festival. Everyone i've spoken to has raved about it!
