Igna,

Hughes has effectively become the Yankees #4 starter, a status that will be cemented when the Yankees skip Vazquez's next turn in the rotation and start Hughes Friday night at Boston. The Yankees have an off day Thursday, so Vazquez will be passed and Hughes will get the nod Friday on his normal rest. Vazquez will do a bullpen session, and presumably start the next time his turn comes up.

I anticipated Hughes being this good sooner, especially after he first came up in 2007 and threw a perfect game for 6.1 against Texas before hurting himself overthrowing. It's obvious that he has the body and the stuff to be a front end major league starter, but he did not have the mastery over his changeup and his curve that he has now, and it took him a while to regain his fastball after he got hurt in 2008. He actually did not throw that many curveballs today, and he was overly reliant on it until he had regained his fastball. I have been very impressed with his development and I thought from day 1 in spring training he should be in the rotation and Joba in the bullpen. If Vazquez cannot get his act together, it's still possible Joba could also be moved into the rotation although I hope that does not happen.

By the ways Hughes has a sizzling WHIP of 0.88.

Cervelli played 3rd base today as a late inning defensive replacement for Pena, but did not have any balls hit his way. I am wondering if they will try to get him some at bats there spelling ARod occasionally as so far Pena has not hit much, and Cervelli has had very consistent quality at bats. I love Pena's defense and versatility, but his offensive development has been hindered by a lack of at bats.

Hughes velocity is back to where it was before he got injured, that is a big part as to why he is pitching so well, I still think that CC will beat him out for the CY Young though.

Jamie Moyer

Jamie Moyer is a starting pitcher in the major leagues at age 47 and is pitching tonight on ESPN. The fucking guy is older than I am! This is unbelievable. I hope he can keep it going.

BTW Moyer's fastball is topping out at 82 mph, LOL.

having followed the career of Phil Hughes since he was in the minors, it is scary to see how good this guy is, and still has yet to reach his full potential, the yanks have a really great core of young guys from the farm and you can see this generation starting to claim their spots to take hold of the reigns for the next decade, Cano, Hughes, Chamberlain, Cervelli, Pena, Gardner, etc

Boy you sure jumped off the SS Vazquez awful fast...lol

Hello all,

Damn, swept by the perennial cellar dweller Orioles and now facing the Tigers, Yankees, Phillies, Twins, Devil Rays in a row. Beckett looked very good today, but...Ouch! Despite some key injuries, something seems amiss.

Things aren't all rosie for the Yankees either. Javier Vasquez has been very poor with an ERA near 10.00; and as for Mark Teixeira, despite having a great day today, he is currently batting just .153.

Mark Teixeira Abyssmal In April

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/lists/...tions-for-May-043010#sport=MLB&photo=11176501

Will Mark Teixeira find his stroke?

The Yankee first baseman was a popular preseason pick for AL MVP honors, but he's off to an abysmal start. Yes, Teixeira is no stranger to April struggles -- throughout his career, it's been his worst month by a substantial margin -- but his start this season has been slow even by his standards. He's "hitting" .153 AVG/.314 OBP/.271 SLG, and that makes him one of the least productive regulars in all of baseball. He'll come out of it eventually, but to what extent? And can the Yankees hang with the Rays if one of their most productive hitters isn't up to his usual levels?

Well, those numbers aren't MVP caliber. He's got 1 less HR than Ortiz, and only 4 more RBIs. NOT GOOD!

Cheers,

Merlot

Hello Merlot,

You forgot to mention poor ARod who sat out today with a knee injury. Healing without the vitamin B is a bitch...

Disaster for Johan!

What a disaster tonight for Johan Santana. A bases loaded walk to the 47 year old pitcher Moyer, followed by a grand slam by Victorino (the second grand slam Santana has served up this year), then followed by another hit and a 2 run shot by Utley. 4 homers and 10 runs allowed by Santana in less than 4 innings.

Hello all,

if only sabermetrics could pitch well and more importantly hit and play better defense, then maybe the sox would be the KINGS OF THE BASEBALL WORLD!

I LOVE this photo. But I am surprised you would want to be reminded of how great it was for Ortiz when he crushed the Yankees in 2004. Here he is above right after his second ALCS game-winning extra innings hit saying...in your face A-Rod. Ahhhhhh!

In that case, you've done a terrific job of fooling everyone all these years!

LOL...sorry...couldn't help it.

"Pull an Iggy"? Doesn't penicillin fix that?

I'm trying to be nice. Let's not dredge up the nasty old truth.

Damn, the Sox couldn't win any of 3 games against the Orioles who only have 7 total wins, even thanks to the Sox, and now the Red Sox are destroying the Angels for stem to stern. Drew and Lowell alone have combined for 8 hits and 7 RBIs in what is at this time a 17-4 rout in the 9th. Go figure.

Oops, thanks Schoeneweis you bastard. Now 17-8.

Cheers,

Merlot

Dave Roberts Diagnosed With Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Hello all,

Prognosis 'good' for Dave Roberts

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Former-major-leaguer-Dave-Roberts-has-lymphoma-050310

Dave Roberts, whose stolen base for Boston in the 2004 playoffs sparked the Red Sox to an elusive World Series championship, is being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Roberts was diagnosed in mid-March. He said the cancer was detected early and he's undergone two sessions of chemotherapy. The prognosis is "good," he said.

"I expect to beat this and be fully recovered,'' Roberts said during a conference call Monday.

Dave Roberts had a pivotal stolen base for the Red Sox in the 2004 playoffs.Ezra Shaw

The 37-year-old Roberts, who is working for the San Diego Padres as a special assistant, said he wanted to keep his illness private but knew that his appearance would be changing as he underwent chemotherapy.

I met him once, along with several other of the new 2004 World Series Champions in Rhode Island shortly after the Series. He's a very likable guy in person, and of course we Sox fans are forever in debt for his 2004 ALCS saving heroics stealing second and putting himself in scoring position to turn the playoffs from an unmitigated disaster to a World Championship. All my best wishes to him.

Many cheers,

How does it feel to be in 4th place Merlot, one spot above the cellar, bawhahahahahahahahaha.

Well for expert advise from years past one would have to yield to the Front Running Yankees fan who typically dons everything Yankee when the team is winning but mysteriously hides it all in the closet when they are losing...so Joe.t how should we feel...lol?

BTW...somehow I missed your update from last nights inhalation of the Angels in which the Sox dead and anemic offense put up 17 runs...maybe just a tune up for the Yankees. Too bad we won't get to see that great #4 Ace - Vazquez as he will be sitting on the bench(skipping a start because of all the confidence the Yankees have in him)...BP would have been so much fun...

What happened to good old tackling of the fan running onto the field?

Lazy, fat ass Philadelphia security with that "fuck 'em" mentality that the city of brotherly love is known for...

Sox are two games under .500 after 26 games. Last year, the Yankees were two games under .500 after 32.
