You left out something, Jman. Three of the "Core Four" Yankees are on the shelf. Rivera hasn't pitched in days and is questionable for the weekend. Both Posada and Pettitte could be headed to the DL. Posada could return sooner without a trip to the DL if he played a different position, but his injury makes squatting difficult. Pettitte has a long history of elbow problems; they aren't going to take chances with him.

Two things in particular were notable about the Yankees 2009 season. 1) After A-Rod returned in May, the team did not suffer an injury the rest of the season. 2) The team got career years from 6 guys in their late 30's. Two of them are now gone; three of the others are hurt.

Where I belong.
All winter, the refrain we heard was that the Sox don't have enough hitting. Pete Abe posted the following today:

"Home runs
Blue Jays 43
Diamondbacks 40
Red Sox 39

Doubles
Blue Jays 80
Tigers 76
Red Sox 68

OPS
Yankees .822
Diamondbacks .814
Red Sox .812

Slugging
Diamondbacks .467
Red Sox .464

Those pesky facts. Still the Sox are only ninth in runs scored. But that is a product of poor situational hitting early in the season and we're starting to see that even out now. By the All-Star break, the guess here is they'll be top four or five.

Jason Bay is hitting .238 with one (1) home run in the National League, by the way. He has struck out 33 times in 101 at-bats."

The Sox are where they are because of poor pitching early in the season.

Like MLB.tv for PCs, the blackout rules are pretty silly. I can't watch Red Sox games when I'm at home or Blue Jay games when I'm in Canada.

Ain't that the truth. You could live in British Columbia & live zillions of miles from Toronto, yet they won't allow you to watch the game just because you're in Canada. Absolutely stupid!! Which is why i've cancelled my membership. Why would i have to go out of the country to watch my favorite team's games? Pure nonsense!

Time to put Dice K out to pasture, god this guy is awful, chalk up another failure by Epstein.

Hello Joe.t,

Spoken like a true 1 inning genius...

And the pitching guru Cashman's record speaks for itself, right?!...for starters how about ... Javier Vazquez, Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano, and Javier Vazquez(no I didn't stutter...lol) ... and oh yeah who could forget Hideki Irabu?!

Have fun,

Jman

PS BTW, I can't stand Dice K - he drives me f%$#ing crazy when he pitches...:D

I honestly don't know how the people in Boston can put up with his antics. After him, another pitcher i can't stand is the Jays' Jason Fraser......i call him the Human Rain Delay.

and to think the red sox "sunk" to the Yanks level (as red sox fans would put it) and paid MILLIONS! just to talk to him,,.,,,, HA! (was gonna bwahahaha, but it upsets Spec K, for reasons i still have yet to understand) :)

You are just killing me...its amazing how the self righteousnesses on squandering MILLIONS can come out when you lose on one deal.:rolleyes: Comon' Iggy, admit it you are just frosted 'cause the king of squandering cash got out maneuvered by Theo on the Dice K deal...frankly he was blindsided and all but admitted it. LOL.:p The Yankees wanted him just as bad at the time.

Anyway - if Cashman wants him now I am sure Epstein will make him a great deal...

Ramiro Pena for Dice K would bother me alot, that is if Cashman would be so dumb as to accept such a lopsided deal in the Red Sox favor.

I was thinking what a steal it would be for the Yankees if Vazquez came to Boston and Dice K went to NY...
BTW After the 1st inning Dice K regrouped and pitched...more than I can say for that head case Javy boy.

Of course we know the salary and the luxury tax would never bother CASHman...

Oh look ... Sox just concluded a 4 game sweep (convincingly) of the Angels...

And probably don't have the brains to understand. iggy, this board was a place for reasonable, intelligent discussion of baseball for quite a few years before you came in and reduced it to a second grade playground level. Unfortunately, you also managed to get Merlot to join you in the sandbox. My suggestion would be to start your own baseball thread for childish antics and leave this one to the grownups. (Yes, we've always had Joe here playing the clown, but he knows he's a clown and he's at least loveable.)

Now back to the game at hand. Jman, I'm going to have to call you out on Dice-K. Yes, he's incredibly frustrating to watch and I admit I feel like I'm going to have a stroke every time I watch him. But, he's now in the fourth year of a six year contract in which he was worth every penny the first two and worth nothing the third, due in large part to poor conditioning and his appearance in the WBC.

This signing was one of Theo's shrewder moves as Sox GM. Yes, he gave Seibu $50M simply for the right to speak with Matsuzaka. And then he turned around and played hardball with Scott Boras and forced him to accept a way-under-market value contract of $52M for six years. The net cost to the Sox is about $16 M per year, just about market value for a top starting pitcher when he was signed. (Others signed the same winter: Barry Zito $18 M, Jason Schmidt $15.6 M, Roy Oswalt $14.6 M.) Brian Cashman was so snookered by Theo's shrewdness that in reaction he immediately hustled out and signed his own Japanese pitcher: Kei Igawa at a cost of $46 M including the posting fee.

I didn't have the misfortune to witness the first inning of last night's game, but I did see innings 3-8. The Dice K that I saw was efficient and effective. Yes, he started every batter out with a ball, but he allowed few runners and not one ball was hit hard.

The jury's still out on Dice-K. We've gotten two good years out of him, we've got him for three more. I'm guessing that when his contract is up, we'll all be quite happy with what we've gotten, even if our hair has turned a lot grayer.

PS. Adding to the shrewdness of the Dice-K signing is the fact that the posting fee does not count toward the luxury tax threshold.

See, right there shows your true colors rumpie poo...... i deleted that post well before you wrote this one, with my copied post. I deleted it after i had decided to let it go because the fact the sox have to deal with the empire this weekend was enough stress for sox fans, so i had a change of heart, BUT you just had to post about it anyways, thus showing you like to keep the "childish antics" going as much as the next guy (by the way, it is called having fun in a thread with the likes of "some people" (wink wink) who need to loosen the neck tie a bit). if you call copy and pasting stats on a daily basis as grounds for intelligence, well then you are a wise man my friend, some would say intelligence is getting a guy to continue to rant and rave about silly posts, who countless times has said he ignores my posts, yet only to really be reading them, and responding, is more of pure genius.

Now, as far as this weekends series, hopefully you can use the tissues you have left over from reading my posts, to dry the tears after the Yanks invade fenway. JoeT prediction, a sweep by the Empire, my prediction, 2 outta 3. yours??? lemme guess, if red sox starters avg 7 innings, and the temperature stays above 55 degrees, and 75% of red sox fans are wearing caps, ortiz only gets 6 and a half at bats, papelbon and youk breakout into riverdance between the 7th and 8th inning of game 2, epstein has a jam session with his band after game 1, the fat lady sings, you get a sense of humor (whoa), doc starts liking the habs for real, eb starts liking ugly fat women, spec k decides to root for the yanks, jman starts 'not' having fun, then the sox will sweep the yanks??? Rumples, we gotta do lunch, if nothing else, so you can try to sell me a ipad. :)

You need to get deleting lessons, pal. I copied your post by clicking on the "Reply with Quote" button just below it early this morning. By the way, it's still there.

Now as for your most recent post, more of the same mindless baiting crap you've been polluting this thread (not to mention the hockey threads) with since you first decided to join this board. Why don't you start a "Fan Crap" thread and see if anyone joins you and, in the meanwhile, leave this one to the intelligent discourse you seem incapable of.

since they are used to being 'swept' by worse teams, did they do the riverdance tonight out of sheer joy?.... why isnt youk in this pic? he likes to "boogie ooogie ooogie" to doesnt he?
Here's some more of the type of pointless garbage that has made you unwelcome in both this and the hockey thread.

Hello Rumples,

Hey - we are in agreement.

I believe I even pointed out on my own sarcastic way that Cashman was just totally frosted by the fact he was purely outmaneuvered by Theo on the Dice K deal. My frustration with Dice K is two fold. First his pitching style and deliberate attention to fine detail is exactly what gets him in trouble. In the first inning last night he walked the first 2 batters (of course Laz Diaz was squeezing the zone early, but he did it to Kazmir too) and that is what killed him. Second his deliberateness just makes him so slow to the plate! He has yet this year to show consistency, but he has only started 2 games.

Thanks for pointing out the Igawa deal, I neglected to mention that in my Yankees biggest pitching busts list. And as for my comments about the trade, it was obvious I was trying to draw out .t...I know, I know....but it's just so easy to do sometimes.

Anyway...going into the weekend it appears there are allot of things going the right way for the Sox and almost as many going the wrong way for the Yankees. Contradictions abound...Beltre is hot / ARod is cold. Pedroia is hot / Cano is room temperature(at best). Paps is healthy / Mo is ?; Ortiz&Lowell DH combo finally working / Johnson, well...lol.
Starting pitching matchups look pretty even on paper(even tho I am sure the Yankee faithful will jump in here and start spewing this seasons limited numbers as being far superior for their pitchers)...however...both CC and AJ have had some awful games at Fenway.

Should be a fun series and I will make no predictions...but indicators are the Sox should do well.

Have fun,

Jman

Well, because as an intelligent baseball organization they realize that the season is not over, nor is the objective met until the final game of the World Series is played and won...

Hello Jman,

No one is happier than me to see the Sox sweep the Angels four straight after being swept by the Orioles three straight. Yahooo! I have no issue with your assessment above. But lets remember that sweeping the Angels, who were a sub-.500 team before the last series, is far from a good indicator of anything except for having the heart to comeback after being swept. Yes, we got some great pitching, some excellent run production, and came from behind. But that was all in just 4 games against a dubious team. What happens between tonight with the Yankees and May 26 when we will have played the Yankees (two series), Tigers, Twins, Phillies, and Rays will be telling. Considering this level of competition and how most of these teams are currently playing I'd consider coming out at least .500 over the next 19 days something to be hopeful about. Much of anything better and I'd be encouraged. But most of all I just want to see the Sox put up a good fight every possible game. And since Matsuzaka will being pitching at least four times that means he has to show he can still be a real factor consistently enough to have value against the best.

Oh yeah...
