I see beckett is back to his old tricks, doing what he does best, being a dirty headhunter. (was it 4 or 5 wild pitches behind the back, in the ribs or at the head tonight? typical NO CLASS sob. gonna be a fun weekend! GO EMPIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Igster,

Beckett does get ugly at times. I can understand the brush-back strategy, but what I saw on ESPN this morning isn't it. Then getting so extreme when opponent pitchers do the same is pure hypocrisy. Now if only you could ever get honest about the Yankees...there could be a hint of "class".

Still, what a pitching outing for Beckett. It was a solid quality performance. If he continues to do this, and Lester and Buchholz hold their end, it will be a very interesting race down to the end despite the patchwork offense and relief issues.

The hearts of Red Sox Nation goes out to Mike Lowell. What a tremendous ovation of appreciation for a terrific player and person Sox fans still love. It's sad to see the position he's been in all year as he has done well when he has played. And ...BOOM ...first pitch GOOOONNNNNE!!!!! He's still a valuable asset for any team and a CLASS ACT all the way.

Now for the question of the day. Who is going to hit 600 home runs first? A-Rod or Rumples Aunt Mildred??? Go AUNTIE GO!

Aha...now we see where his focus has gone. He's a little bit busy with a sweet and generous friend.

Friend: How's that buddy?
Alex: You know what I like.

Forbes.com Best Fans in Sports

No surprise here that the Red Sox possess THE best fans in all of sports according to Forbes!! Where do the Yankees rate? No surprise there either, coming in at a dismal....wait for it.... #14 bbbwwaaahhhh!!!!! Typical of a team with such bandwagoners as EB and the other dolts destined to come out of the woodwork IF the Yanks make the post season. Pats come in at #5 and the Celts at #7.

Cairo will be happy to see the Red Wings at #3, the Habs at #11 and the Leafs....ahhh, they didn't make the list at all.

Thanks SK - Forbes definitely hit a home run with this ALMOST perfect list. I say "almost" because the Yankees fans should be sitting with the leafs fans in exile at the bottom of some other list. Everything else is just right, however, with Wings fans - to NO ONE'S surprise - being the best in all of hockey (thank you, thank you). Also, a well-deserved pat on the back for Sox fans - congratulations all around!

I have to admit that A-Rod is a very talented ballplayer...and an even more talented chemistry experiment.

Yea, the admitted juicehead who fraudently belted his 600th today won't even get into the Hall of Fame!! Bwwwaahhh!!!

Sure he will. He never did anything illegal. Steroids weren't illegal in MLB until just a couple of years ago.

p.s. I hate A-Rod. But i do believe he has his place in the HOF & will be an easy induction.

I highly doubt it. You won't see Bonds, McGwire, Sosa or Palmeiro in there either.

The difference between all of those guys & A-Rod is that none of them (i'll add Roger Clemens to that list of names) admitted to their steroid use (other than McGwire years after denying he ever did use them). A-Rod admitted to using steroids when it was reported he did. That's why i'm still convinced A-Rod will be a first (or at worse, second) ballot inductee. Let's put it this way: if you don't induct A-Rod, no one who played baseball in the 90's until 2003 should be inducted, which is the year MLB finally began testing (randomly) players. I doubt this will happen, and it will be unfair since as i've mentionned before, steroids 'were' allowed by MLB back then. Nor was it a big secret that many players were using them (along with HGH, which is still being used today).

Same thing with Pete Rose. He didn't stand a chance in hell of being admitted to the HOF as long as he denied his gambling habits. Even though gambling on baseball is illegal (and always was), Rose finally spilled the beans on his gambling habits & now stands a slim chance of being inducted. It's not much of a chance, but it's still a chance.

Youkilis out for season

Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis will undergo season-ending surgery Friday to repair a torn muscle in his right thumb, manager Terry Francona said.

"They took another MRI right in the [thumb] area that left no doubt surgery was necessary," general manager Theo Epstein told ESPNBoston.com. "Youk is a big part of our heart and soul. He's one of our best players and one of the best players in the league. It's a big impact but it creates an opportunity for other guys to step up and help offensively.

"If there is a silver lining, it is that it's pretty routine surgery. He'll be 100 percent and have a normal offseason."

When asked if the procedure would end any chance of Youkilis playing in the postseason as well, Francona said the team would "have to drag this out to around Thanksgiving" for his star first baseman to be available.

The thumb will be immobilized for six weeks and then be reevaluated, Francona said.

Youkilis suffered the injury on Monday night against the Cleveland Indians and was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday. He visited a hand specialist in Cleveland on Thursday, who confirmed the diagnosis and treatment.

"It really stinks," Youkilis said Tuesday after the Red Sox beat the Indians 3-1. "[This injury] is very rare. Zero athletes have had it, at least as far as the doctors have said. It was a freak accident. I don't know how it happened or the reason behind it. It just happened."

When informed of the news on Thursday afternoon, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said: "I knew this was coming. That's a major hit. It just got worse around here. Everyone knows Youk is a guy who plays the game hard. When guys like Youkilis and [Dustin] Pedroia come out of games you know there is a problem.

"He is one of the best players we have, no question about it. But you gotta do what you gotta do. You gotta take care of that [thumb]. You have to come back healthy next year," he said.

"We have to fight it. It's not over yet," he added. "You can't hang it up. You have to try to compete."

The Youkilis news is the latest -- and biggest -- blow for a Red Sox team that is struggling for its playoff life and has been ravaged by injuries this season. Besides Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, Mike Cameron and Jason Varitek are currently on the disabled list and Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Manny Delcarmen have all spent time on the shelf.

"It seems to be happening all in one year," Epstein said. "Hopefully this will give us a year or two of good health. All teams deal with injuries but we're getting it in spades this year."

Allo JC,
Well put jc, well put.
Glad to see 600* has past, now that the circus is over, we can get on with baseball.

Hello Doc, SK...the whole era should have an * put on it. Cheaters should be denied admission to the hall...period. Admitted or not, the voters know McGuire, Sosa and Bonds used...comon'.
Nuff said...it will be interesting to see the votes.

Have fun,

Jman

Hello Merlot,
Hello SK,

Great posts. Do you know what the difference is between a Sox fan and a Yankees fan - simple...heart, brains and perseverance. Tough to find a pinstripe moron when the going gets tough...but we are always there for the team.

Makes me think of a riddle...
When a classless, brainless dumb ass tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it...does it make a noise? Anybody hear any noise?!
LOL!!!

Have fun,

Jman

Cheaters? MLB knew full well that many 'stars' in the 90's & early 2000s were juicing themselves. But MLB looked the other way since their two biggest stars at one point, McGwire & Sosa, were saving baseball with their race to the homerun record. MLB didn't care that the likes of Ken Camminety, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire & hundreds of other players were on steroids & HGH. All it cared about was the profits coming in & the fact fans were returning to the ballpark after the 1994 cancelled season. That's why it only began to test players in 2003....not because it really wanted to, but because of pressure from Congress & baseball fans in general.

So my point is....if MLB didn't take steroids & HGH seriously, why is it considered 'cheating' by those same players whom MLB put on a pedestal at the time?

Where do you draw the line when it comes to 'cheating'? Shouldn't corrective eye surgery be considered 'cheating'? What about players playing on Red Bull? Wouldn't that be considered 'cheating' also? What about players who play for teams offering better training regimen & exercise equipment? Wouldn't this edge they have over other teams be considered 'cheating'? I could go on & on.

Well Doc,

I don't get a vote on who gets in the hall and who does not...so all I can offer is my opinion as a fan of the game and someone who loves the game. In my opinion, cheating in the context of this question, is using a substance or substances for the sole purpose of artificially enhancing performance. It is that simple. Steroids were not needed to "heal". HGH is not needed to "heal". There were and probably still are players who use solely for the reason of enhancing performance. Cheating. Saddest part about the whole thing is the message they sent to young kids - who by using that crap can totally ruin themselves for life. Terrible message.

Yes you are correct...MLB and owners looked the other way. It's all about greed...it's always about greed. The almightly dollar rules, especially in the short term. Where do you draw the line...lol...MLB and the players union created the mess...let them fix it. Personally, as I stated earlier...I think the entire era should be * in the record books. Maybe we can get BALCO to put a special wing in Cooperstown...?!

'Nuff said...I could go on, but I will stop here.

Have fun,

Jman
