Will Eric Lindros finally get a fair shot at the Hall of Fame?
by Steve Simmons, The Toronto Sun
This is Eric Lindros’ shot. If he doesn’t make the Hockey Hall of Fame, Class of 2016, when will he?
There are no sure things up for election next summer. There are no Nicklas Lidstroms or Chris Prongers to fill the ballot easily. There is a list of those who have been passed over by the Hall for whatever reason, but no one more prominent or mercurial, no one more loved or loathed than Lindros.
The debate is old and raw and personal and political.
Lindros brought a lot of that on himself, with assists from his family. What matters now is whether he can find the 14 votes necessary to get himself enshrined. The only obstacles in front of him are reputation and opinion.
There’s a chance next year for Jeremy Roenick, for Mark Recchi, for Steve Larmer, maybe for Paul Kariya, and certainly for the already overlooked Russian star, Sergei Makarov. Makarov should have been a slam dunk years ago. Some people believe the same about Lindros. The other candidates, unless you have a personal flag to wave, are marginal. But sometimes, as Phil Housley’s election proved this year, the marginal Hall of Fame candidate can get elected.
There is nothing marginal about Lindros. He was always big, too often bigger than the game.
Whether the Hall is willing to welcome him next year, on a candidacy list without any sure things, is the question.
Eric Lindros to the hall?
